HCA Healthcare to have 10,000 physicians using ambient AI by year-end

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare expects about 10,000 physicians to be using its Ambient Clinical Documentation technology by the end of 2026, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer Michael Schlosser, MD, told Becker’s during the CEO + CFO Roundtable in Chicago.

Dr. Schlosser said HCA Healthcare initially established digital transformation as a separate effort to give teams room to test new approaches. The system later shifted toward having clinical and business leaders identify priorities for the technology teams to address, an approach that has since shaped how HCA Healthcare organizes its clinical and digital operations.

“The biggest opportunity really is in care delivery,” he said.

HCA Healthcare named Commure, a company it has invested in, its exclusive ambient AI partner in October 2024. The two firms co-developed the tool with physicians, starting with hospitalists and emergency medicine physicians. By year-end, Dr. Schlosser expects the technology to be in more than 100 of HCA Healthcare’s approximately 189 hospitals across those two specialties, with about 3,000 outpatient physicians and advanced practice providers also using it. HCA Healthcare plans to complete the rollout across the company by the end of 2027.

The tool saves clinicians about five minutes per note, or one to two hours per shift, Dr. Schlosser said. Outpatient clinics have seen increased throughput as physicians chose to add patients to their schedules, and physicians have reported they no longer need to complete documentation at home.

On the inpatient side, HCA Healthcare is tracking documentation completeness and timeliness, including measures such as denials and patient acuity. Dr. Schlosser said the system has data showing physicians are completing their notes faster.

“I give a lot of credit to the Commure teams that really embedded with us, listened to our doctors, took the feedback and kept making the tool better and better,” he said. “That has really driven the adoption we’ve seen.”

The rollout comes as HCA Healthcare brings its clinical and digital transformation efforts under the leadership of Dr. Schlosser, who became executive vice president and chief clinical officer Sept. 1, taking oversight of HCA Healthcare’s clinical services while continuing to lead its digital transformation and innovation efforts.
