Google clarified its previously announced updates regarding school education services to address recent backlash, saying that the changes are designed to "give schools more choice, not less" regarding artificial intelligence (AI) tools.
Google wrote on X that "Gemini, Gemini Notebook, and Search will be OFF by default. This is based on K-12 schools asking for more control over student use of AI services." The company added that schools are "in control" and "can choose to turn ON one, two, or all of these services individually."
Following backlash and political criticism from figures like United States Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, Google stated that these adjustments address "feedback we’ve heard from educators in recent months" and feature modified Search tools that "offer step-by-step guided learning through problems, so that students don’t get quick answers to schoolwork."
