United States Senator from Vermont Bernie Sanders accused Google of "extortion" on Tuesday after reports that schools banning artificial intelligence (AI) would lose access to Google Search.
"President Trump claimed that AI oligarchs could regulate themselves because they 'love our country.' Now, Google is threatening schools: if you stop your students from using AI, we will cut off your access to Google Search. That's not love. That's extortion," Sanders wrote on X. He also called for an immediate pause in AI development.
Earlier, Google announced that AI tools and Google Search would be disabled by default for K-12 students until schools explicitly enable them. The company also introduced Guided Learning features in Search and Classroom to help students solve problems step by step.
