Develop vaccines for all animal influenza strain, says incoming WHO chief scientist

Governments should invest in vaccines for all strains of influenza virus that exist in the animal kingdom as an insurance policy in case of an outbreak in humans, the incoming chief scientist at the World Health Organization said on Monday.

Countries ranging from the United States and Britain to France and Japan have suffered record losses of poultry in outbreaks of avian flu in the past year.

The recent spread to mammals of H5N1 - commonly known as bird flu – needed to be monitored, but the risk to humans remained low, the WHO said earlier this month.

Incoming WHO chief scientist Jeremy Farrar said he would like to see the pharmaceutical industry at least conduct some clinical trials for all influenza strains such that the world would not have to start from scratch to initiate global manufacturing should the need arise.

"My concern that we're in slow motion watching something which may never happen," he added in a media briefing. "But if it were to happen, would we look back on what we're doing at the moment and say, why didn't we do more?"

Farrar is a clinical scientist who most recently served as the director of the Wellcome Trust. He was appointed as the WHO's chief scientist in December, and will formally join the agency later this year.

UK healthcare strikes to intensify as junior doctors vote to walk out

Tens of thousands of junior doctors in England have voted for strike action next month, their trade union said on Monday, adding to a series of walkouts by nurses and ambulance workers putting pressure on an already strained health system.

The British Medical Association (BMA), which represents some 45,000 junior doctors in England, said 98% of those taking part in a ballot had voted in favour of strike action, adding that they will stage a 72-hour walkout next month. The BMA did not give a date for the strike.

Junior doctors agreed in 2019 to an annual 2% pay rise as part of a four-year deal but say that is now inadequate in light of much higher inflation.

"This vote shows, without a shadow of a doubt, the strength of feeling among most of England’s junior doctors," the BMA said. "We are frustrated, in despair and angry and we have voted in our thousands."

The BMA describes junior doctors as those who are qualified in clinical training and have up to eight years' experience working as a hospital doctor or up to three years in general practice. They work under the supervision of a senior doctor.

British health minister Steve Barclay called the vote "deeply disappointing."

"I've met with the BMA and other medical unions to discuss what is fair and affordable, as well as wider concerns around conditions and workload. I want to continue discussing how we can make the make the NHS a better place to work for all," he said in a statement, using the acronym for the National Health Service.

The BMA says junior doctors have suffered a more than 25% real-terms pay cut since 2008, leaving many demoralised and four in 10 wanting to leave the profession, according to a recent survey.

Another trade union for doctors, the Hospital Consultants and Specialists Association, said its junior doctor members had also voted to carry out strike action in a separate ballot. That strike, on March 15, involves less than a thousand staff.

American Medical Association’s Racism Course Is Unscientific Propaganda

Let’s say you are a doctor with an interest in the role racism may play in medicine. Your natural inclination is to turn to the American Medical Association as a resource since it is the largest publisher of medical education products in the United States.

You find an AMA course titled “Racism in Medicine” replete with a video valued at one credit-hour of continuing medical education. Of course, it helps that the course is free. You turn on the video and are immediately met with the smiling, youthful face of Dr. Emily Cleveland Manchanda, who says:

So tonight, we are going to begin as those of us at the Center for Health Equity always begin each of our talks — with a land and labor acknowledgement. We acknowledge that we are all living off of the stolen ancestral lands of indigenous peoples for thousands of years; we acknowledge the extraction of brilliance, energy, and life for labor forced upon people of African descent for more than 400 years; we celebrate the resilience and strength that all indigenous people and descendants of Africa have shown in this country and worldwide. We carry our ancestors in us, and we are continually called to be better as we lead in this work.

Flabbergasted, you wonder what in the world this has to do with the practice of medicine.

The answer, of course, is nothing, but dogma like this is part of the woke agenda the AMA is forcing upon its doctors. Recall the Supreme Court case of Lee v. Weisman stemming from a complaint by a Jewish parent of a graduating junior high school student who was subjected to listening to a nondenominational prayer delivered by a Jewish rabbi at the beginning of her commencement ceremony. The Supreme Court deemed that forcing students to observe a prayer at the beginning of a commencement ceremony was “subtle coercion,” and though such forms of coercion may be most pronounced in schools, they “may not be limited to the context of schools.” Well, the AMA has certainly found another context in which this form of coercion exists: within the continuing medical education credits offered to its doctors.

One can scarcely argue that the “racism” course offered by the AMA is anything other than propaganda. In addition to the historical misrepresentations designed to demean America’s history and heritage, the lecturer recurrently and exclusively cites leftist authors such as Dr. Camara Phyllis Jones, Ibram X. Kendi, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Chester M. Pierce, Derald Wing Sue, Ijeoma Oluo, Harriet Washington, Dayna Bowen Matthew, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, Heather McGhee, and Isabel Wilkerson, each of whom discusses race from a hierarchical point of view. Not once does the instructor in this ostensibly scientific presentation offer a conservative source regarding the role of race in medicine or in American society.

Scientific Misrepresentations

And if pure propaganda were insufficient, she then engages in a series of unfathomable scientific misrepresentations. First, she describes what she calls “the nested subset” approach to defining race as being “a more modern and scientifically accurate understanding of genetic diversity.” According to the doctor, the nested subset approach “reflects that there’s no genetic or biological basis for race and that this is a truly political and social construction” (emphasis added). Dr. Cleveland Manchanda buttresses her claim by observing that “there’s more genetic variation within what we call racial groups … than between any,” and by the lack of complete agreement when assigning a race to a particular individual.

Yet claiming the absence of any genetic or biological basis for race is patently absurd. One can scarcely imagine how a physician could deny associations between certain genetically caused diseases and racial or ethnic groups such as Tay-Sachs disease and Ashkenazi Jewssickle cell disease and people of African descent, and cystic fibrosis and people of European descent, to name a few.

But perhaps her most offensive position is the one she takes against her own grandfather, a deceased American war hero who served in the Pacific during World War II and who then became a pathologist, rather than a surgeon, due to the lingering disabilities from shrapnel injuries earned in defense of his country. According to Dr. Cleveland Manchanda, whatever advantages he may have secured for his progeny through his sacrifice were “unearned” simply because he was white.

In short, this lecture demonstrates how far the AMA has strayed from its mission’s focus. As Dr. Andy Borom, board member of the U.S. Medical Association, notes after learning of the AMA’s racism course, “The AMA has irretrievably left the building of physician advocacy, abandoning it in favor of radical leftist ideology. They have become a fringe organization that in no way helps physicians practice effectively.”

Biden’s Surprise Ukraine Trip Is Already A Disaster

A round of applause for U.S. President Joe Biden: he has just touched down in Ukraine in a show of support for a nation that has truly suffered like no other in the 21st century.

But there is a problem with all of this: if he was ever going to do this trip it is about six months too late and creates a massive amount of problems for the president.

Like what the heck is your Ukraine policy anyway? I do this for a living and I struggle to understand what it is.

Ok, the moment of truth, I don’t know what it is.

The problem for Joe Biden is people are now actually going to start asking real questions about U.S. policy when it comes to the Ukraine war. You don’t need a Ph.D. from Princeton to dream them up: what are our goals in Ukraine, how do we plan to achieve them, and what we are willing to risk to reach them

And believe me, those are never questions any president wants to answer when it comes to matters abroad.

Imagine if we asked these questions before or even during  Vietnam, Afghanistan, and the Second Gulf War? The world as we know it today would not look the same.

For example – and let’s try to look past Biden’s photo-op foreign policy moment in Kyiv – does anyone have a clue exactly what Joe Biden’s end goal is for giving Ukraine billions of dollars of military aid?

I can answer that for Joe Biden – he doesn’t have one.

Want proof? It seems the administration only gives the sort of aid that would make a difference – M777 artilleryHIMARSM1 Abrams tanks and I am sure soon it will be F-16 fighters – when pressured – and only then. That means Ukraine has enough arms to push Russia back and gain some ground but never achieve anything spectacular on the battlefield.

There is no end game, just to make sure there is no media outrage that we aren’t helping Ukraine. You know, Biden has to worry about 2024 and keeping his poll numbers from not slipping any more than they have.

But from here the questions get even harder. Has Joe Biden ever articulated exactly how he wants to see the war in Ukraine come to an end? For example, will Biden press Moscow and Kyiv to start negotiating once say Ukraine pushed Russia out of all lands it took beginning one year ago? How long will America keep taking ammo and weapons out of its own stocks to help Ukraine fight? You can’t answer that until you get some sort of idea about the administration’s end goals and what the strategy is to get there. This isn’t a war we can keep supporting forever and ever – no nation can or would.

Or – and this is where things get quite dangerous- is Biden’s war goals in Ukraine something more extensive? Does Washington truly want to see Ukraine take Crimea, another land grab by Putin nearly ten years ago that could be a real Russian redline that could push Moscow into actually thinking about tactical nuclear weapons or something even worse? And what are we willing to risk to get that goal achieved?

For the sake of argument, let us assume that Joe Biden wants to help Ukraine take back Crimea and see the nation restore its borders to its pre-2014 state. How much money and equipment are we willing to spend to do that? What weapons platforms will we give Kyiv to accomplish that task? How much intelligence are we willing to share?

Joe Biden has opened a Pandora’s Box when it comes to his trip to Ukraine as it will force him to some extent to answer – or at least try to answer some of these questions.

I hope the photo-op was worth it.

"Large White Balloon" Spotted Near Hawaii

A number of airborne objects have been shot down this month, including a Chinese surveillance balloon. New reports indicate this balloon fad might not be over.

The Drive reported a large white balloon was spotted by commercial pilots about 600 miles east of the Hawaiian Islands on Monday. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has notified pilots in the area about the sightings of a balloon traveling at an altitude of 40,000 and 50,000 feet.

Which parts of Mexico are on the ‘do not travel’ list?

Ahead of the busy winter break and spring break travel season, the U.S. Department of State has issued a “do not travel” warning for parts of Mexico.

In the department’s most recent update, it issued a “do not travel” warning for six states because of an increased risk of crime and kidnapping, mainly related to drug cartel activity. The six states with a “do not travel” warning are Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas.

The State Department advises tourists to “reconsider travel” to seven more states: Baja California, Chihuahua, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Morelos and Sonora.

If you are traveling to Cancun, Cozumel, or the Rivera Maya, all three popular destinations and tourist areas, the government urges you to “exercise increased caution.”

“There are no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in Quintana Roo state, which include tourist areas in: Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya,” says the State Department. “However, personnel are advised to exercise increased situational awareness after dark in downtown areas of Cancun, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen, and to remain in well-lit pedestrian streets and tourist zones.”

Deanna Taylor, a senior travel advisor for AAA, has been a travel agent for 30 years. She said she has never had someone not return to Mexico because of a bad experience. She said that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be aware of your surroundings.

“You certainly wouldn’t want to be wandering off resorts in unfamiliar areas especially late at night,” said Taylor. She also advised against carrying a lot of cash on your person.

White House gave Russia heads-up about Biden’s Ukraine visit for ‘deconfliction purposes’

The White House provided Russian officials with advance warning that President Biden would be traveling to Ukraine to mark the approaching anniversary of Russia’s invasion to avoid escalating tensions, administration officials said Monday.

“We did notify the Russians that President Biden would be traveling to Kyiv. We did so some hours before his departure for deconfliction purposes,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters.

Sullivan did not detail how Moscow responded to the news, and officials were careful in sharing other details about the planning around Biden’s trip for security reasons.

Biden arrived in Kyiv on Monday in a show of support for Ukraine in its ongoing fight against Russia. It marked Biden’s first trip to Ukraine since the Russian invasion began. He spent roughly five hours in the capital city, meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and delivering remarks on U.S. support.

“One year later, Kyiv stands,” Biden said. “And Ukraine stands. Democracy stands. The Americans stand with you, and the world stands with you.”

While the visit could risk increasing tensions between the U.S. and Russia, White House officials and Biden made clear the show of support for Ukraine was critical as the war hits the one-year mark on Friday.

“This was a historic visit, unprecedented in modern times, to have the president United States visit the capital of the country of war, where the United States military does not control the critical infrastructure,” Sullivan told reporters.

Biden is facing pressure from Kyiv and from some lawmakers at home to follow its recent offer of battle tanks with a supply of F-16 fighter jets. Some experts believe Biden needs to do more to help Ukraine win the  war by proactively providing advanced equipment, rather than responding to each new Ukrainian request with lengthy deliberations.

The president on Monday announced $500 million in additional aid would be provided to Ukraine, including military assistance, though he did not provide specifics on what that would include.
