'Fox buys Red Seat Ventures to tap podcast market, reuniting with Megyn Kelly, Tucker Carlson'

Fox Corp. expanded its reach into the growing podcast market on Monday by scooping up Red Seat Ventures, the digital media company whose clients include former Fox News stars Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson.

The deal represents an investment in an area of media where personalities such as Carlson, Kelly, Piers Morgan and Shawn Ryan reach millions of subscribers via podcasts and streaming shows.

It will also help Fox News, which is the highest-rated cable network, reach younger audiences who are increasingly tuning in to podcasts for information.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Valerie Wirtschafter, a senior data analyst in the Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technology Initiative at the Brookings Institution, told Reuters that podcasts, particularly conservative podcasts, have grown in popularity in a decentralized media landscape.

“Podcast hosts are extremely trusted. They’re sort of like friends,” she said. “They’re more intimate. They’re inside your head.”

President Donald Trump’s appearance on the popular “Joe Rogan Experience” in October was credited with helping him reach an audience of mostly young male voters — a crucial demographic that helped him clinch the presidency.

Red Seat Ventures — named for the red seat in Boston’s Fenway Park that marked the park’s longest home run — provides a range of services for its talent, from billing and payroll to production support, the company said.

In January, The New York Post – owned by News Corp, which shares common ownership with Fox Corp. – retained Red Seat to develop a new daily podcast and audio division for the newspaper.

Red Seat’s client list includes former New York Times journalist Bari Weiss, former HLN host Nancy Grace, true-crime podcaster Chris Hansen, television personality Dr. Phil and former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly.

While Fox News remains the highest-rated cable news network, the 2024 election cycle revealed that some audiences preferred to get their information from podcasts.AP

The deal brings O’Reilly, Kelly and Carlson back into the fold, though Red Seat Ventures will operate independently within Fox’s Tubi Media Group.

That group operates a free video streaming service. The former Fox talent will not be employed by Fox, however.

“We see tremendous opportunities to drive additional scale in genres such as sports, news and entertainment,” Tubi Media Group CEO Paul Cheesbrough said in a statement Monday.

The Red Seat deal is not Fox’s first foray into the podcasting space. In 2021, the company acquired Outkick, a right-leaning sports and political commentary website and podcast founded by Clay Travis.

Trump to nix Biden restrictions on water-using appliances, lightbulbs

President Trump proclaimed Tuesday that he will be reversing former President Joe Biden’s restrictions on water-using appliances and energy-eating lightbulbs — the day after he nixed a ban on paper straws.

Trump said he is instructing Environmental Protection Agency Secretary Lee Zeldin to “immediately” carry out the order to go back to his first administration’s standards — which will return such things as incandescent bulbs.

“I am hereby instructing Secretary Lee Zeldin to immediately go back to my Environmental Orders, which were terminated by Crooked Joe Biden, on Water Standards and Flow pertaining to SINKS, SHOWERS, TOILETS, WASHING MACHINES, DISHWASHERS, etc., and to likewise go back to the common sense standards on LIGHTBULBS, that were put in place by the Trump Administration, but terminated by Crooked Joe,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

The Biden administration had set new energy-efficiency standards for various household appliances, saying the move would save Americans money and combat the country’s carbon footprint.

Many of the regulations were set to come into effect in 2027 and 2029. The Biden Department of Energy had already signed off on the necessary accompanying compliance policies for dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, cooking products and more.

While in office, Biden also had reversed a rule that Trump had pushed for that allowed more water to flow through shower heads. In 2020, Trump joked he was working to relax the water pressure standards because his hair had to look “perfect.”

In addition, the Biden administration had vowed in July 2024 to “phase out” plastics including straws in federal food service, with the end of procurement due in 2027. Trump signed an executive order reversing that move Monday.

The Energy Department under Biden also had finalized a new standard for lightbulbs, requiring new bulbs after July 2028 to be produced with greater energy efficiency. The new efficiency standards were aimed at banning halogen and incandescent bulbs.

The lightbulb rule had been in the works since 2007 with the passage of the Energy Independence and Security Act, but the Trump administration blocked the rule from taking effect in his first term.

Trump has railed against the new lightbulbs for years, claiming incandescent lightbulbs are cheaper and make people look better in their soft yellow light.

“They took away our lightbulb,” he said at a rally in 2019. “I want an incandescent light. I want to look better, OK?

“I want to pay less money to look better,” Trump said. “Does that make sense? You pay much less money and you look much better. And on top of that, with the new bulbs, if they break, it’s considered a hazardous waste site. It’s all gases inside, and you’re supposed to bring it back to where you bought it in a sealed container. Give me a break.”
