Market sell-off hasn't been driven by recession fears: JPMorgan

An analysis by JPMorgan suggests that the U.S. stock market's recent sell-off hasn't been driven by concerns about the economy falling into recession.

Mounting uncertainty over the impact of President Donald Trump's tariff plans on the economy, U.S. trading relationships and the labor market, with stubborn inflation continuing to strain Americans' household budgets.

"U.S. growth concerns due to tariff uncertainty is often mentioned in our client conversations as a major reason for the recent U.S. equity market correction," wrote a team of J.P. Morgan analysts led by Nikolaos Panigritzoglou last week. "Indeed on our estimates, the implied probability of a U.S. recession embedded across asset classes continued to creep up over the past week as risk markets suffered losses and as U.S. Treasury yields decline."

However, the JPMorgan analysts' review suggested that the correction may have been caused mainly by quantitative hedge funds that use algorithmic strategies to adjust positions, rather than concerns about a recession.

"The recent U.S. equity market correction appears to be more driven by equity quant fund position adjustments and less driven by fundamental or discretionary managers reassessing U.S. recession risks," they wrote.

The report noted that credit markets are sending a less recessionary signal than equities and a bond benchmark.

As of March 11, the S&P 500 Index suggested a 33% implied probability of recession, while the 5-year Treasury implied a 46% chance, base metals 45% and the Russell 2000 Index a 52% chance. By contrast, U.S. high-grade credit markets implied a 12% recession chance and U.S. high-yield credit just a 9% probability.

"If one puts more weight on credit markets and dismisses U.S. recession risk, what then explains the correction in U.S. equities and in particular Nasdaq? Looking across investor types, retail investors are unlikely to be the culprits," the analysts wrote. "As we highlighted in our recent publications, retail investors continued their 'buying the dip' behavior over the past three weeks."

"In our mind the most likely culprits are equity hedge funds and in particular two categories: Equity Quant hedge funds and Equity TMT Sector hedge funds," the analysts said. They went on to note that more traditional hedge funds focused on long or short equity positions played less of a role in the pullback given their equity beta, a financial metric, rising in February.

"If the above assessment is correct and equity quant hedge funds played more of a role than their discretionary counterparts, then the recent U.S. equity market correction would appear to be more driven by fundamental or discretionary managers reassessing U.S. recession risks," the analysts explained.

"And if U.S. equity ETFs continue to see mostly inflows as they have thus far, there is a good chance that most of the current U.S. equity market correction is behind us," they added.

Canada’s Oldest Company, Hudson’s Bay, Tries to Avoid Full Liquidation

Hudson’s Bay Co. fought to avoid a full shutdown in a Toronto courtroom on Monday, asking for permission to begin liquidating most of its stores this week.

A lawyer for Canada’s oldest company, Ashley Taylor, said HBC’s efforts to solve its cash flow crisis have “failed.” Taylor also told a standing-room-only crowd at the Ontario Superior Court of Justice that if the retailer can’t find a workable solution with its creditors and landlords, it would need to fully liquidate.

Welcome To FAFO-Land

 by James Howard Kunstler,

"Well, now the other shoe drops"

 -Auron MacIntyre

It’s as simple as this: the orgy of judicial lawfare put on by blob-adjacent Democratic Party seditionists trying to make the USA ungovernable is looking to get swatted. Hubris is a harsh mistress, but Nemesis is more like the gods’ re-po man, and he comes to the door with attitude, meaning bidness. Blob judges will get flushed out of their humid conclaves naked and find themselves, astoundingly, in the FO zone of FAFO-land.

Do you think AG Bondi is playing tiddlywinks in Main Justice or that Kash Patel is just sitting there buffing his nails over at 935 Pennsylvania Avenue NW? Where did we get the idea that federal judges can just act with impunity, jerking around the public interest like some show-off with a yoyo?

Case in point: Judge James Boasberg, head honcho of the DC federal district court stepped into the FAFO waiting room over the weekend when he ordered two planeloads of deported toxic human trash known as Tren de Aragua, bound for jail in El Salvador, to return to the USA.

Mr. Trump’s White House refused, saying the planes were already over international waters, outside the judge’s jurisdiction.

Dem-blob lawyer Mark Zaid made the predictable next move, claiming that the matter will be grounds for Impeachment No. 3 against Mr. Trump post the 2026 midterm election.

But, of course: strategery!

The general purpose in this latest phase of lawfare is to choke the federal courts with so many restraining orders and injunctions that the White House lawyers find themselves locked into an endless Chinese fire drill of counter-filings, motions, writs, and appearances. It’s all that the so-called “resistance” has left, what with DOGE breaking up the racketeering operation that has funded the Dem’s defense of the blob for a decade. By which I mean the government funding of non-governmental orgs (ha!) to distribute payola to Dem foot-soldiers who do all the dirty work of protecting the rogue bureaucracy in a circle-jerk of power and payoffs. This includes the dirty work of Dem-blob lawyers such as Mark Zaid, Norm Eisen, Mary McCord, Marc Elias, Barbara McQuade, Joanna Lydgate et al.

The history of Judge Boasberg in particular presents a disturbing picture of a tool covering-up every act of the shadowy blob’s war against American citizens.

Boasberg presided in the FISA court that fraudulently enabled the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane operation to attempt ousting newly-elected Donald Trump in 2017, and the many RussiaGate pranks that followed. As chief judge of the DC District, he oversaw the Jack Smith Special Counsel op and all the cases associated with it, including the Mar-a-Lago raid and the J-6 case in Tanya Chutkan’s crooked court. Boasberg allowed the prosecution of J-6ers under the unlawful use of the corporate fraud obstruction statute, 18USC§1512c2, a.k.a. the Enron law. He presided over the trial of Ray Epps, the shady character recorded on video repeatedly urging J-6 protestors to “go into the Capitol.” Boasberg gave Epps a suspended sentence while grandmothers who merely “paraded” through the rotunda between velvet ropes that day got sent to jail.

What can be done about judges like Boasberg?

The prevailing view is: not much. I’m not so sure that’s true.

While Rep. Brandon Gill (D-TX) announced last week that he will file articles of impeachment against Boasberg, a two-thirds majority would be required to convict him in any eventual Senate trial, so fuggeddabowdit. But federal judges are not immune from criminal investigation and prosecution, which is where AG Bondi and FBI Director Patel ought to come in. What’s probably standing in plain sight is a RICO conspiracy involving the aforesaid lawfare artists — Norm Eisen & Co — and the federal judiciary to deliberately bury the executive branch under burdensome fraudulent process, impede the executive branch’s ability to carry out its constitutional duties, and to obstruct justice.

Would you like to know if correspondence exists between these parties? Mr. Patel can ask them to produce it, and if they fail to, there’s a strong possibility that DNI Director Tulsi Gabbard can root it out of the NSA’s server farm. Depositions can be demanded. The lawfare lawyers will have to hire lawyers — just as all the targets of “Joe Biden” and Merrick Garland were obliged to lawyer-up when they were systematically persecuted from January, 2021 to January, 2025. The meters will run, ka-chingka-ching. It will be interesting to see who is footing the bill for that. You can be sure that it will be found out. Reid Hoffman? George and Alex Soros? Note: Dan Bongino was sword in as Deputy Director of the FBIat 8:00 o’clock this morning. Nemesis is open for bidness.

The lawfare gang would love all of this to ramp into a king-hell constitutional crisis. Could happen. Let them try. They don’t hold any of the levers of power the way they used to. A lot could go wrong for them. Welcome to FAFO-land.

Egg Price Collapse Scrambles Democrats' Inflation Propaganda Against Trump

Democrats just had their egg-related misinformation and disinformation campaign against the president scrambled, as new USDA data reveals a third consecutive week of price declines at supermarkets. The drop follows President Trump's recent countermeasures to stabilize national supply after the Biden-Harris administration's reckless culling of 150 million egg-laying hens plunged the industry into turmoil and sparked egg-flation.

Even leftist ABC News had to acknowledge falling USDA egg prices.

This followed weeks of Democrats and leftist corporate media attempting to pin the egg crisis on Trump.

Notice the explosion in "egg prices" stories in corporate media—data via Bloomberg.

USDA egg prices hit a historic high of $8.17 per dozen on March 3, roughly two weeks ago. Since then, prices have more than halved.

Correct.

Trump top-ticked egg prices with:

Earlier this month, Elon Musk wrote on X, "It's true. There was an insane slaughter of 150 million egg-laying chickens ordered by the Biden administration."

Dr. Robert Malone questioned Biden's bird flu approach, noting last month:

It almost appears as if the previous administration was waging war on the nation's food supply—especially considering some of their billionaire donors' deep investments in fake meat and fake food. Not surprising, perhaps, given that everything about the party is fake.

HUD, Interior announce plan to use federal land for affordable housing

Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Scott Turner and Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum announced on Monday plans to identify federal lands where affordable housing could be built.

Turner and Burgum will launch the Joint Task Force on Federal Land for Housing to find underutilized lands for residential development and to streamline the process to transfer the lands for housing use.

In an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal, they promoted the plans as a way to increase the housing supply and lower costs for Americans.

“Working together, our agencies can take inventory of underused federal properties, transfer or lease them to states or localities to address housing needs, and support the infrastructure required to make development viable—all while ensuring affordability remains at the core of the mission,” they wrote.

The Interior Department oversees more than 500 million acres of federal lands, and the department argues much of it is suitable for residential use.

The two secretaries also vowed to streamline the regulatory process so building on a federal lands doesn’t get held up with environmental reviews, transfer protocols and other priorities, according to the announcement.

Housing affordability was a top issue for voters in 2024, and President Trump and former Vice President Kamala Harris both had proposals to tackle housing costs.

Trump, at the time, proposed a plan to cut “unnecessary regulations” that Republicans say raise housing costs and to promote homeownership through tax incentives. He had also argued during the campaign that cracking down on border crossings was a way to counter rising housing costs.

Pew Research Center survey in October showed that 69 percent of voters said they are “very concerned” about home prices, a jump of 8 percentage points from the figure recorded in April 2023.

VA halts gender-affirming care for transgender veterans

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will no longer offer gender-affirming medical treatment to transgender former service members, the department announced Monday, citing an executive order President Trump signed on his first day back in office.

Steven L. Lieberman, the department’s acting undersecretary for health, wrote in a March 14 memo first reported by NPR that the VA would rescind a 2018 directive outlining “the respectful delivery of health care to transgender and intersex Veterans.”

The 2018 policy protected access to treatments like hormone therapy and pre- and post-operative care for gender-affirming surgery, though the VA has never offered transition-related surgeries. The policy also allowed trans veterans to use restrooms and be assigned rooms in VA facilities that match their gender identity and required staff to use their chosen names and pronouns.

In a news release on Monday, the VA said it was reversing the policy to comply with Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order proclaiming that the U.S. government recognizes only two sexes, male and female, and preventing federal dollars from being spent on what the White House has called “gender ideology.”

“Effective immediately, VA will not offer cross-sex hormone therapy to Veterans who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with gender dysphoria,” the VA said, referring to a diagnosis characterized by severe emotional distress stemming from a mismatch between a person’s gender identity and sex at birth. Exceptions may be made for trans veterans already receiving care, it added.

The department also no longer will offer services like voice training or items like chest binders, surgical compression vests, wigs and dilator sets for trans veterans, according to Monday’s announcement.

Transgender former service members who are eligible for VA care “will continue to receive comprehensive VA health care, which includes preventive and mental health care,” the department said, adding that Monday’s announcement “does not affect VA medical care for eligible Veterans who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer.”

Money allocated for gender-affirming care will be redirected to help severely injured VA beneficiaries, such as paralyzed veterans and amputees, regain their independence, the VA said.

The department said Monday that it does not keep consistent or reliable records on the total number of veterans who have received gender transition care through the VA, the amount of money spent on treatment or the number of employees involved.

The RAND Corporation estimated in 2016 that the Department of Defense spent between $2.4 million and $8.4 million annually providing transition-related health care to service members, the population that makes up future veterans.

Congressional Research Service report updated in January found the department spent roughly $15 million on care for 1,892 transgender active-duty service members between 2016 and 2021, though that amount includes the cost of surgical care, which the VA does not provide.

According to an estimate from the Veterans Health Administration, less than one-tenth of a percent of the 9.1 million veterans enrolled in VA health care are transgender.

“I mean no disrespect to anyone, but VA should not be focused on helping Veterans attempt to change their sex. The vast majority of Veterans and Americans agree, and that is why this is the right decision,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said in a statement.

Asked which data or public opinion polling Collins was alluding to, VA Press Secretary Pete Kasperowicz directed The Hill to a map of the 2024 presidential election results.

“All eligible Veterans – including trans-identified Veterans – will always be welcome at VA and will always receive the benefits and services they’ve earned under the law,” Collins said. “But if Veterans want to attempt to change their sex, they can do so on their own dime.”

VA facilities, according to Monday’s announcement, have already blocked transgender veterans from using restrooms, locker rooms and patient rooms that match their gender identity. The department has begun sending letters of support to non-VA providers to provide gender-affirming surgeries to veterans, it said.

In a statement, Lindsay Church, executive director of Minority Veterans of America, said the VA’s decision to roll back protections for gender-affirming care “is a direct attack on the dignity and well-being of transgender, nonbinary, and intersex veterans — one that will have deadly outcomes.”

“VA is abandoning those who have served, stripping us of critical health care protections, and sending a clear message that our lives and service to our country do not matter,” Church said.

Major medical organizations say gender-affirming care for trans adults and minors is medically necessary and often lifesaving, though not every trans person chooses to transition medically or has access to care.

Emily Shilling, president of SPARTA Pride, an advocacy group for transgender service members, called the VA’s announcement “a betrayal” of the “sacred trust” foundational to military service. Shilling is one of several transgender service members suing the Trump administration over another executive order to prevent trans people from serving openly in the military.

'Georgetown announces reduced tuition, career services for fired federal workers'

Georgetown University is launching a program to offer tuition assistance and career services for the thousands of federal workers impacted by President Trump’s push to shrink the government workforce.

“Over the past few weeks, the lives of thousands of public servants have been disrupted with reductions in staff at federal agencies,” interim Georgetown President Robert M. Groves said in a message announcing the new initiative Monday. “Our university response: we expand opportunities for education.”

Georgetown unveiled a new web repository of available resources, including ways that verified federal workers who’ve lost their jobs can get 10 percent discounts on most master’s degree programs and reduced prices for some professional certificates. The university also is waving application fees and extending deadlines to apply for master’s programs this fall.

Additionally, Georgetown is offering free career seminars through the summer for ousted federal workers, beginning with a session on “federal-to-civilian career moves” on March 31 and an April 9 seminar on “navigating the job search after a layoff.”

Groves, who was director of the Census Bureau under former President Obama, became the Georgetown’s interim leader in November 2024 after longtime university President John DeGioia retired for health reasons.

“We recognize the incomparable value of the work that many in our community have committed their careers to, and we will continue to offer support as we navigate these changes together,” Groves said in his announcement.

Mass firings under Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency, which is led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, have hit federal employees across government, including many deemed “probationary” workers who generally have been on the job less than two years and are easier to terminate under the law. The effort is being challenged in court.

The Department of Education laid off nearly half of its workforce, about 1,315 employees, last week.
