Van Hollen keeps dodging questions about migrant’s MS-13 ties

Sen. Chris Van Hollen on Sunday repeatedly sidestepped questions about whether Kilmar Abrego Garcia was an MS-13 gangbanger as the Trump administration has alleged.

Van Hollen (D-Md.), who met with Abrego Garcia in El Salvador on Thursday notably refused to deny that Abrego Garcia was gang member and confessed he did not ask him about the alleged ties when they spoke — despite CNN’s Dana Bash asking him point-blank if he could say “with absolute certainty” that the deported illegal migrant wasn’t a member of the vicious gang.

Hollen then shifted the discussion from MS-13 by ironically accusing President Trump of repeatedly trying to change the subject on due process concerns.

“What Donald Trump is trying to do here is change the subject,” Van Hollen told CNN’s “State of the Union” Sunday when Bash asked about Abrego Garcia’s alleged MS-13 ties.

“They are trying to litigate on social media what they should be doing in the courts.”

The Maryland Democrat then read off a quote from US District Judge Paula Xinis, who said there was “no evidence linking Abrego Garcia to MS-13 or any terrorist activity has been presented to the court.”

“That’s where to litigate this,” Van Hollen stressed. “I’m not going to get into the details because the whole purpose of our court system is for them to adjudicate these things, not for them to go off on social media.”

Abrego Garcia, 29, who illegally entered the US in 2011, was deported to his home country of El Salvador last month despite a 2019 court order blocking his deportation there due to concerns that he could face gang violence.

That deportation came under unique circumstances via Trump’s use of wartime powers in the 1798 Alien Enemies Act.

During his brief meeting with Abrego Garcia, Van Hollen declined to ask about his alleged MS-13 ties because “I know what his answer is” and recounted how the 29-year-old told him he was “sad and traumatized that he was being in prison because he has committed no crimes.”

The Trump administration alleges that Abrego Garcia was discovered having “rolls of cash and drugs” when he was detained and that he had been “arrested with two other members of MS-13.”

They’ve also claimed in court documents that Abrego Garcia was “confirmed to be a ranking member of the MS-13 gang by a proven and reliable source.”

Publicly, they’ve also pointed to a lower court ruling from 2019 in which he was denied bond because “the evidence shows that he is a verified member of MS-13” and to a police report from 2019 that suggested he was an active MS-13 member at the time of his initial detention.

Van Hollen has previously accused the Trump administration of lying about Abrego Garcia’s alleged ties to MS-13.

“I want to emphasize that President Trump and our Attorney General Pam Bondi and the vice president of the United States are lying when they say that Abrego Garcia has been charged with a crime or is part of MS-13,” he emphatically told reporters in El Salvador last week.

“That is a lie.”

Abrego Garcia’s legal team and family have been adamant that he is not a member of MS-13.

Still, despite his staunch advocacy on behalf of Abrego Garcia, who lived in Maryland before his deportation, Van Hollen indicated that he’s not necessarily opposed to him being deported.

“I’m okay with whatever the rule of law dictates,” Van Hollen contended to CNN on Sunday. “We have a lawless president who is ignoring the order of the Supreme Court of the United States to facilitate his return. That’s what’s going on right now. That is a risk to all of us.”

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court ordered the Trump administration to take steps “to ‘facilitate’ Abrego Garcia’s release from custody in El Salvador and to ensure that his case is handled as it would have been had he not been improperly sent” there.

But the high court also ruled that the lower courts must show “deference owed to the Executive Branch in the conduct of foreign affairs.” The Trump administration claims it is complying with the Supreme Court and has argued that it was not ordered to compel El Salvador to send Abrego Garcia back to the US.

“I don’t think it’s ever wrong to fight for the constitutional rights of one person, because if we give up on one person’s rights, we threaten everybody’s rights,” Van Hollen added.

In a separate interview with NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Van Hollen said he believes that the US is in a constitutional crisis at the moment because the Trump administration is “very much flouting the courts as we speak.”

He also addressed the Trump administration’s criticism that he has focused more energy on defending Abrego Garcia than on getting justice for Rachel Morin, a Marylander who was savagely raped an beaten and raped by an illegal immigrant in 2023.

Last week, the White House spotlighted her mother, Patty, who delivered an emotional rebuke of the senator’s efforts to defend Abrego Garcia.

“My heart goes out to the Morin family. They suffered, experienced an unspeakable tragedy in the murder of their daughter,” Van Hollen said.

“I’m very glad that the killer of Rachel has been convicted in a court of law. That is how we hold guilty people accountable. The courts of law are also where people get to have their due process so we don’t unfairly punish people who don’t have criminal records,” he continued.

“I’m not sure why Abrego Garcia’s rights should be denied based on an awful murder that he had absolutely nothing to do with.”

Following the senator’s visit to El Salvador, Van Hollen revealed that he had been informed that Abrego Garcia was transferred out of the notoriously brutal Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) to another facility in Santa Ana.

That new facility has “better” conditions, but Abrego Garcia was still kept in isolation, according to Van Hollen.

Cornell blasted for inviting ‘vile Jew-hater’ Kehlani to perform on campus

Cornell University has invited Jew-bashing entertainer Kehlani to perform on campus May 7 — defending the move as just giving its students what they want.

Kehlani has a music video that starts with, “Long live the Intifada” — an inflammatory phrase that critics say promotes violence against Israelis and Jews — shared a map online that eliminates the state of Israel and refused to condemn Hamas for the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre.

The invite to the multi-Grammy Award-nominated R&B artist comes after the Trump administration froze $1 billion in federal funding to the upstate Ivy League school amid a civil-rights probe over whether it failed to prevent antisemitic discrimination and harassment on campus.

“Kehlani isn’t just an artist with controversial views — she is someone who has publicly glorified violence against Jews and consistently promoted dangerous, antisemitic rhetoric that directly threatens our community,” said disgusted Cornell student Amanda Silberstein.

“For a university that claims to value inclusion and the safety for all students, this decision is not just tone-deaf — it’s profoundly alienating,” said Silberstein, a 21-year-old junior who is president of the Chabad Center at the school and vice president of the group Cornell for Israel.

“By inviting someone with such a deeply troubling history of antisemitism to headline one of our most high-profile campus events, Cornell is sending a message that Jewish safety and wellbeing are negotiable,” she said.

The watchdog group StopAntisemitism agreed that the invitation is beyond the pale and previously highlighted the performer’s anti-Israel and antisemitic views in a July 12, 2024, post.

Kehlani supports the terrorist regime Hamas “under the guise of ‘resistance,’ ” the group said.

It cited her “Next 2 U” music video that admired the Palestinian terror group’s violence against Israelis on Oct. 7, 2023, opening her song with, “Long live the Intifada” appearing across the screen and featuring dancers in keffiyehs waving Palestinian flags.

The group noted Kehlani refused to condemn Hamas for the massacre of Israeli civilians that day.

“Instead, Kehlani directly called for the destruction of Israel and its people,” the group said.

“Kehlani doubles down on her support for the global call to murder Jews by sharing genocidal phrases such as ‘long live the resistance’ and ‘from the river to the sea.’ “

Cornell defended the invitation, saying Kehlani is performing at the request of a student-run group on “Slope Day,” an end-of-year celebration for students.Getty Images

The singer also shared a map on Instagram that eliminates the state of Israel, and she touted several posts and uttered rants including, “Zionists are all evil” and Zionists are the “scum of the earth” and they should all “go to hell.”

“It’s f–k Israel, it’s f–k Zionism, and it’s also f–k a lot of y’all, too,” she said on X last year.

StopAntisemitism founder Liora Rez said, “Now, Cornell is doubling down by featuring vile Jew-hater Kehlani as a headliner for their end-of-year celebration.

“Kehlani uses her platform of 20 million followers, more than the number of Jews on the planet, to incite hate against the world’s only Jewish state. She openly calls for intifada, the violent targeting of Jews, and the eradication of Zionists, code for over 95% of the global Jewish population,” Rez said.

“Black students wouldn’t be expected to welcome a KKK rock band on campus. Asian students weren’t told, `Asian hate …Get over it.’ So why are Jewish students treated as the exception?”

Rez said Cornell and every other university enabling bigotry, harassment and violent extremism must be “fully defunded,” investigated for foreign funding and have their endowments, real estate and income taxed.

Cornell defended the invitation, saying Kehlani is performing at the request of a student-run group on “Slope Day,” an end-of-year celebration for students.

“The headliner is selected by the student-run Slope Day Planning Board following a poll of students,” a Cornell rep said. “Kehlani was chosen based on her popularity and the genre of her music. She recently performed at Northeastern University without political expression or incident.

“The personal views expressed by this artist are their own and do not represent the university. However, the artist must uphold Cornell’s anti-discrimination policies, which includes prohibition of political expression as part of the concert. Failure to do so constitutes breach of contract and will result in loss of payment.”

Kehlani’s reps did not respond to a Post request for comment.

Cornell has been roiled by numerous anti-Israel protests, and Jewish students’ lives have been threatened.

Student Patrick Da pleaded guilty last year to threatening to kill Jews in posts on the university’s website.

Boston Mayor's Campaign Allegedly Funded By Dem Power Broker Linked To China

Boston Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu has positioned herself as anything but 'America First'—doubling down on sanctuary policies that defend criminal illegal aliens. Her liberal sanctuary city laws increasingly undermine national security, raising serious questions about why she has embraced such a dangerous stance.

Daily Caller News Foundation investigation has potentially uncovered why the far-left mayor stands with illegal aliens and not with bolstering national security after the disastrous Biden-Harris regime's migrant invasion:

Boston Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu's 2021 campaign received hundreds of thousands of dollars from a fundraiser who is listed by a Chinese intelligence agency as an official, a Daily Caller News Foundation investigation discovered.

Gary Yu, the founder of Boston International Media Consulting, helped raise over $300,000 for Wu with the help of a Chinese civic association he leads. However, Yu — whose Chinese name is Yu Guoliang — is listed as an official by an agency of a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) influence and intelligence service called the United Front Work Department (UFWD), and also operates as a recruiter for the Chinese government, according to reports from the CCP, Chinese state media and civic associations led by Yu.

Forensic analysis of public records reveals a web of entities connected to "Gary Guoliang Yu" by one degree of separation, including DCNF's target: Boston International Media Consulting

"China's strategy to influence state and local policymakers is executed, in part, through hundreds of ostensibly 'civil society' organizations that are actually affiliated with the CCP's UFWD," Michael Lucci, CEO of State Armor, a nonprofit focused on countering the CCP, told the DCNF.

Lucci noted, "Xi Jinping considers United Front work a critical tool to undermine democracies. It involves influence peddling, intelligence collection, and intellectual property theft, all for the end goal of aligning U.S. subnational governments with China's foreign policy and exploiting weaknesses they find."

China expert Gordon Chang told the DCNF, "There is no ethnic Chinese official in America who is not targeted. It's time for law enforcement to investigate the CCP's ties to Gary Yu and Yu's ties to Mayor Michelle Wu."

"Wu's ultra-leftism makes her the perfect candidate for CCP recruitment and capture," Chang said, adding, "Or do we have it backward? Is her ultra-leftism the result of CCP recruitment and capture? More than just the people of Boston would like to know."

Mayor Wu has continued to state she will not comply with mass deportations of criminal illegal aliens.

Wu's stance is deeply alarming, as harboring criminal illegal aliens poses a very clear threat to national security.

Policies like these don't serve the American people—they serve foreign adversaries like China, which seeks to destabilize the U.S. from within as it prepares for war.

Russia-Ukraine war: US says it would welcome extension of ceasefire

The U.S. State Department said on Sunday it would welcome the extension beyond Sunday of a one-day Easter ceasefire declared by Russian President Vladimir Putin even as the Kremlin said earlier there was no order for an extension.

Both Russia and Ukraine accused each other of breaking the ceasefire. Putin announced a one-day ceasefire in Ukraine until midnight Moscow time (2100 GMT) on Sunday.

"We have seen President Putin's announcement of a temporary ceasefire due to Easter. We remain committed to achieving a full and comprehensive ceasefire," a State Department spokesperson said in an emailed statement on Sunday.

"As we assess their seriousness in this instance, we would welcome it extending beyond Sunday."

U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned of the escalation risk of the three-year-old war launched by Russia's full-scale invasion of its neighbor and said he wants to end the war. However, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday Washington will walk away from efforts to broker a peace deal unless there are clear signs of progress soon.

After the U.S. and Ukraine reached a memo of understanding on Thursday, Trump said he expected to sign a minerals deal with Kyiv in a week. An attempt in February fell apart following Zelenskiy's Oval Office clash with Trump.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia was pretending to observe the Easter ceasefire, but had in fact continued hundreds of artillery attacks on Saturday night, with more assaults on Sunday. Russia's Defence Ministry said Ukraine had broken the ceasefire, inflicting damage to infrastructure and civilians.

Putin has said he wants Ukraine to drop its NATO ambitions, permanently cede to Russia the four regions it has lost and limit the size of its army. Kyiv says those demands are tantamount to demanding its capitulation.
