Walmart, Sam’s Club roll out new ‘Eye Bot’ kiosks

Walmart is using Pennsylvania as a test market for a new way to provide eye exams.

The retailer is rolling out new “Eye Bot” kiosks at 16 Pennsylvania locations — 12 Walmart vision centers and four Sam’s Club Optical Centers — which they say folks can use to get an eye exam in 15 minutes.

“In areas where access might be limited, tools like this help our teams serve customers and members more efficiently,” said Jason Wong, Regional Health & Wellness Director for Walmart, covering Pennsylvania.

“It enables clinicians to focus on the comprehensive care they’re uniquely trained to provide,” he added.

The exam costs $25 at Walmart and is free for Sam’s Club members.

US seized tanker near Venezuela just as warrant was set to expire, court document shows

The U.S. government ‍carried out its seizure of the M/T Skipper off the coast of Venezuela on Wednesday just as a judge-signed ‍warrant was set to expire, according to the document which was unsealed on Friday.

The warrant, which was signed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia Faruqui on November 26, gave the Trump administration until December 10, 2025 to seize the vessel. The seizure is the first of a Venezuelan oil cargo amid U.S. sanctions that have been in force since 2019.

The Skipper left Venezuela's main oil port of Jose between December 4 and 5 after loading some 1.8 million barrels of Venezuela's Merey heavy crude.

The Trump administration has ‌said the M/T Skipper was used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran.

"The seizure of this vessel highlights our successful efforts to impose costs on the governments of Venezuela and Iran," FBI Director Kash Patel said in a statement on Friday.

Sources have ‌told Reuters that the U.S. is preparing to intercept more ships transporting Venezuelan oil.

Despite the unsealing of the warrant, the accompanying affidavit remained redacted. Faruqui ‌said other documents in the case will remain under seal temporarily.

This week's seizure, which ‌was condemned by the Venezuelan government, of the vessel was the latest escalation in growing tensions between Washington and Caracas.

In recent months, the U.S. had carried ‍out several strikes against suspected drug vessels in the region - a move which has been condemned by U.S. lawmakers and legal experts.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly floated the possibility of a U.S. military intervention in Venezuela as the U.S. continues to build up its military forces in and around the Southern Caribbean.

'US said to have seized military cargo from China to Iran'

The United States Indo-Pacific Command raided a ship carrying military cargo from China to Iran last month, the Wall Street Journal reported. According to officials familiar with the matter, the vessel was intercepted in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of Sri Lanka.

One of the sources said the shipment contained dual-use items that were "potentially useful for Iran’s conventional weapons." The operation was allegedly based on intelligence suggesting that the cargo was heading to "Iranian companies that specialize in procuring components for its missile program."

Lefty 'Consumer' Watchdog Group Bought & Paid For By Big Pharma

 Via American Greatness,

The National Consumers League is America’s oldest consumer advocacy organization and a group trusted by the left, especially, to stand up for consumers’ interests.

But according to a review of its tax filings by the Washington Examiner, it has also become part of a web of astroturf groups shilling for the corporate interests of PhRMA, the massive drugmaker trade association that operates in Washington, DC, which donated close to $1 million to it just last year.

The organization’s 2024 tax form, which became available a few days ago, shows that the non-profit spent close to $600 million last year advocating for Big Pharma’s financial interests and policy agenda in Washington, DC, and state capitals across the country.

And a key way in which that advocacy was accomplished was through the National Consumers League, also known as NCL.

The Examiner reports that “PhRMA donated roughly $2 million to NCL between 2020 and 2024, including $875,000 in 2024 alone.”

During that time, NCL has hewed closely to PhRMA issue positions on matters including regulation of insurers that negotiate for lower drug prices for Americans (also known as PBMs), and the 340B drug discount program that disproportionately benefits red, rural America.

But a review of content historically featured on NCL’s website indicates that prior to taking PhRMA money, the group never criticized PBMs or 340B.

When asked for comment by the Examiner, NCL did not deny that their criticism of PBMs and 340B was related to the PhRMA funding, and they confirmed “that contributions from PhRMA support [the group’s] ‘healthcare work.'”

The Examiner has previously reported on apparent astroturf, “pay-to-play” advocacy efforts undertaken by PhRMA.

The Wall Street Journal also ran an exposé about PhRMA’s tactics in the nation’s capital, including what critics say looks like a “buying off” of supposed progressive “identity” groups like Black, Gifted & Whole– a group focused on “Black Queer men”– and MANA, A National Latina Organization.

NCL has also engaged on other issues where major industries have policy issues at stake, including higher interest rate short-term small dollar lending. Some credit unions support regulation of the annual percentage rate attached to such loans, but not the regulation of APRs on overdraft fees, which sometimes exceed more than 1000%.

Ironically, none other than Elizabeth Warren has recently taken to blasting credit unions for high overdraft fees.

The new report about PhRMA’s backing of NCL, coupled with these prior exposes, is a reminder that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., will have his work cut out for him diminishing Big Pharma’s influence over national health care policy.

Hope for getting the stench of weed off New York’s streets

Let’s hand it to Glen Cove, the Long Island town that just banned pot-smoking in public areas; if only New York City would follow suit.

We’re not prudes, but far too much of Gotham now reeks of skunkweed.

It’s terrible for little kids, and not good for older ones; it’s offensive to most adults and a signal of disorder.

Our laws (and law enforcement) discourage public alcohol consumption, and booze doesn’t even stink.

Even in the other states that have legalized marijuana, bans against toking in public remain largely intact: Tolerating private vice is one thing; handing over public parks, playgrounds, beaches and sidewalks is something else entirely.

What actually makes Glen Cove a New York first is that it banned reefer (with fines of $100 for a first offense, $250 thereafter) even in areas where it allows tobacco smoking; that’s eminently defensible as pot smoke (especially from modern weed) is far more pungent.

And if the courts find some reason to toss this out, the Legislature absolutely needs to grant localities the right to follow Glen Cove.

Get high in your own space; leave the rest of us alone.

Milestone FDA OK on 1st, Only Self-Administered Spray for Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardia

Milestone (Nasdaq: MIST) announced FDA approval of CARDAMYST (etripamil) nasal spray for conversion of acute symptomatic paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) in adults, the first FDA‑approved PSVT treatment in 30+ years for more than 2 million Americans. CARDAMYST is expected to be available in retail pharmacies in Q1 2026. Approval is supported by safety data from >1,800 participants and >2,000 PSVT episodes, including the Phase 3 RAPID trial (64% vs 31% conversion at 30 minutes; HR=2.62; p<0.001) and a median time to conversion of 17 vs 54 minutes. Milestone said it is well‑capitalized to launch using existing capital and royalty financing and is pursuing a Phase 3 program for AFib‑RVR via an sNDA pathway.

Five Solutions to the Affordability Crisis

The current political buzz term is affordability crisis. Every day, political pundits and politicians talk about the affordability crisis because they know it represents an existential threat to the American dream.

The affordability crisis faced by tens of millions of Americans is more than a political slogan; it is a visceral struggle that causes chronic stress and anxiety, breeds hopelessness and apathy, begets envy and rage, and sows disillusionment and nihilism.

In other words, the affordability crisis that is making it impossible for hard-working Americans to get ahead is untenable. If it is not solved holistically, it will likely foster social chaos that could result in radical socio-economic changes like the implementation of American socialism.

The time for political posturing and pontificating is over. Americans need viable solutions to the cost-of-living crisis before it is too late. Below are five simple solutions that are intended to address the root causes of the affordability crisis.

Government Spending

The fundamental driver of inflation that is crushing the lower- and middle-classes and has warped the overall economy is out-of-control spending by the federal government. The national government spends, prints, and borrows trillions of dollars each year, which devalues the currency and creates asset bubbles that are advantageous to the rich.

It is incumbent that Congress cut spending back to pre-pandemic levels, balance the budget, and institute long-term reforms for insolvent entitlement programs.

Housing Supply

Real estate agents say it’s all about location whereas economists would say it’s all about supply.

Clearly, the U.S. housing market is suffering from a supply shortage. The reasons for the lack of supply are varied: a huge increase in immigration under President Biden, decades of onerous environmental regulations, restrictive zoning rules, high property taxes, burdensome building codes, rent freezes, big banks buying single-family homes and turning them into rental properties, etc.

Incentivizing the construction of single-family homes is the obvious solution to the problem. Therefore, it would behoove governments at all levels in all states and cities to take prudent measures to incentivize home-building by decreasing red tape, easing regulations, and lowering property taxes.

Energy

Like it or not, abundant and reliable energy is essential to affordability because energy is the mother’s milk to modern life. Energy impacts the cost of every activity and economic transaction.

When the cost of energy is artificially increased due to government intervention, all Americans suffer, especially those at the lower end of the economic ladder. Wealthy Americans may get annoyed when a gallon of gas increases or their electricity bills balloon, but hard-working Americans are hit much harder when politicians play energy politics.

Bringing down the cost of energy by eliminating subsidies and mandates for expensive, unreliable, and unclean green energy at both the federal and state levels coupled with a drive to unleash affordable, reliable, and clean energy sources like natural gas would help alleviate the cost-of-living crisis.

Embrace Entrepreneurship and Nurture Innovation

Historically, America has been the land of opportunity because its economy was an incubator for entrepreneurship and innovation. Today, this is not the case.

Today, the barriers for entry into many markets are simply too high for entrepreneurs and small businesses to overcome. The economy, for lack of a better word, is rigged in favor of big businesses that have powerful connections, legions of lobbyists and lawyers, and politicians in their pockets.

This rotten, sclerotic crony capitalist system is more akin to European serfdom than the American experiment. However, it can be reformed.

Maybe it’s time to consider a new era of anti-trust legislation to break up industry-wide cartels that bully small businesses and deter open, fair competition. I think it is more than past time to loosen the regulatory labyrinth that big businesses have erected at all levels of government to prohibit start-ups. The same should apply to the maze of licensing requirements and other barriers that individuals face when they are just trying to get a business up and running. Create opportunity zones that over time will rekindle upward mobility.

Health Care

Like education, the cost of health care has far outpaced inflation. Although most blame the exorbitant cost of health care on greedy corporations, the real culprit is government intervention.

As government has become more embedded in health care spending and decisions, the cost of care has skyrocketed, and the quality of care has plummeted.

The solution is putting Americans, not government, at the center of the health care decision-making process via programs like health ownership accounts, direct primary agreements, and many more consumer-driven ideas.

In a perfect world, Americans would buy health insurance like they buy auto insurance. It would be portable, not tied to one’s job, not a one-size-fits-all policy, tailored to the unique needs and circumstances of individuals/families, etc.

Perhaps we should allow people who are young and healthy to purchase policies that take into account their lower risk factors. Maybe we should tie premiums to one’s health habits. There are countless ways to insert free-market forces, what some call the invisible hand, which would restore price signals and reintroduce the laws of supply and demand into health care. Doing this would significantly reduce the cost of health care and put more money in Americans’ wallets.

As history shows, when the masses think the system is rigged, they almost always reach a breaking point and demand revolution.

Thankfully, we have not reached this ominous point yet. However, it would be foolish to believe that the status quo is tenable.

The affordability crisis will likely worsen if current trends continue and political leaders refuse to address the root causes. This is not a partisan issue. It is the most important issue facing America as we prepare to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday.
