'Measles complication makes body forget how to fight other infections as cases rise to highest in 30 years'

Surviving measles doesn’t mean you’re in the clear.

In 2025, the US saw a dramatic spike in cases, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting the highest levels of the highly contagious disease in over 30 years.

Now, health experts are sounding the alarm about a little-known complication that can make your body forget how to fight off future infections — putting you at risk for years after your initial symptoms fade.

Measles is a serious respiratory disease that often causes fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes and rashes.¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿ – stock.adobe.com

Known as immune amnesia, it occurs when the measles virus attacks the cells in your immune system responsible for remembering past infections.

Normally, these “memory” cells help your body recognize and fight off pathogens it has already encountered. But when measles wipes them out, your immune system forgets how to defend against viruses and bacteria it has already defeated.

“You [usually] have a couple of hidden cells in there that remember this and go, ‘Wait, I know this virus. Make antibody X,’” Dr. Sharon Nachman, chief of pediatric infectious diseases at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, told The Post. “Immune amnesia turns that idea off.”

This immune reset can leave you defenseless against threats your body once knew how to fight. In fact, a study found that a measles infection can wipe out up to 73% of a child’s existing antibodies.

“If you have measles, your cells that would have made antibodies [for other diseases] forget how to do it, and you’re kind of immune immature,” Nachman said.

“And the things that you had other vaccines for or made antibodies of in the past, your body forgot how to do, and you’re kind of at risk all over again,” she explained.

It also makes you vulnerable to developing severe secondary infections, such as pneumonia and chickenpox.

And the danger doesn’t end once your measles symptoms subside. Research shows that even after recovery, your immune system can stay suppressed for several months, and, in some cases, for up to five years.

“The threat measles poses to people is much greater than we previously imagined,” Stephen Elledge, senior author of the child antibody study, said in a statement

“We now understand the mechanism is a prolonged danger due to erasure of the immune memory, demonstrating that the measles vaccine is of even greater benefit than we knew.”

The CDC reports that after two doses, the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine is 97% effective at preventing measles.

Recent studies also show that the shot may boost the function of certain immune cells, making them more effective at fighting off other diseases as well.

Yet despite these benefits, vaccination rates have slipped in recent years.

For the 2024-2025 school year, only 92.5% of incoming kindergarteners had received the MMR vaccine. That’s below the 95% threshold public health experts say is necessary to prevent outbreaks.

The effects of this decline are already being felt. In 2025, the US reported 2,065 confirmed measles cases, with Texas, Arizona and South Carolina leading the pack, per the CDC.

Two hundred thirty-five of those cases resulted in hospitalizations, with more than half of the patients being under 19. At least three people died.

That’s a dramatic increase from 2024, when only 285 confirmed cases were reported nationwide.

In fact, the last time the US recorded more than 2,000 cases in a single year was in 1992.

“The US is at risk of losing its measles elimination status should cases continue at this rate,” William Moss, executive director of the International Vaccine Access Center who co-leads the group’s measles tracking project, said in a statement.

“As vaccine confidence continues to be undermined, immunization is more important than ever to end this outbreak and prevent future outbreaks from occurring,” he continued.

The CDC recommends that children receive their first dose of the MMR vaccine between 1 and 15 months, with a second dose between 4 and 6 years old.

Unvaccinated teens and adults can still get vaccinated with two doses, spaced at least one month apart.

'California DMV error forces 325K people to get new REAL IDs'

An estimated 325,000 Californians will have to replace their REAL ID licenses, the DMV admitted this week.

A software error is to blame for the issue, which has now forced a huge number of Californians to get their state-issued driver’s license reissued, officials said.

“The DMV is informing affected individuals of the steps they need to take,” officials said in a news release Wednesday.

A review of their records identified a “legacy system issue from 2006” was to the blame for the snafu.

Some legal immigrants had been issued REAL IDs with no expiry date at the same time as their authorization to remain in the country, officials said.

The issue reportedly impacts approximately 1.5% of California REAL ID holders.

Officials emphasized that no one who was undocumented received one.

The DMV will be waiving fees for those Californians affected.

“We proactively reviewed our records, identified a legacy system issue from 2006, and are notifying impacted customers with clear guidance on how to maintain a valid California-issued credential,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon.

“For nearly 99% of REAL ID holders, no action is required. The DMV remains committed to serving all Californians and ensuring REAL ID credentials meet federal standards,” he added.

The federal REAL ID Act was signed into law in 2005 and placed new rules on which forms of identification may be used to board flights within the United States. It finally came into effect in May of 2025.

FBI says it foiled 18-year-old’s ISIS-inspired New Year’s Eve ‘terror attack’ in North Carolina

An 18-year-old Burger King worker from North Carolina was “prepared for death” as he plotted a New Year’s Eve terrorist attack on a local grocery store and fast food joint in which he planned to maim at least 19 people, officials alleged Friday.

Christian Sturdivant, of Mint Hill outside Charlotte, was arrested Wednesday before he was able to carry out his murderous, ISIS-inspired scheme, US Attorney Russ Ferguson told reporters during a news conference.

“He was preparing for jihad and innocent people were going to die,” said Ferguson of the suspect, describing the would-be attack as “very well-planned.”

Sturdivant was foiled after speaking online with two separate undercover law enforcement officials — one NYPD cop and one FBI agent — who he believed were ISIS collaborators, the prosecutor said.

The suspect — who first allegedly attempted a terror attack at age 14 — had been barred from being online since 2022, but began posting multiple TikTok videos in support of the terror group starting Dec. 18, according to FBI Charlotte special agent in charge James Barnacle.

The feds then opened an investigation and began round-the-clock surveillance of Sturdivant in the two weeks leading up to his arrest.

In online messages, Sturdivant told one of the undercover sources: “I am a follower and soldier of the state … I’m prepared for death,” according to an affidavit by FBI Special Agent John Ryan Anthony.

“I want guns,” the suspect also said, ultimately agreeing to send $500 to $600 to the agent in exchange for a firearm he would collect a couple of days before his planned ambush, according to the affidavit.

Equipped with a Kevlar vest, knives, and hammers, Sturdivant planned to attack his targets when they were crowded with patrons preparing to celebrate the arrival of 2026, Ferguson went on.

Two butcher knives and two hammers were found under the suspect’s bed, along with a written manifesto “where he detailed this attack,” according to the US attorney.

A note titled, “New Years Attack 2026,” that prosecutors said law enforcement found during a Dec. 29, 2025, search of Sturdivantâs residence in Mint Hill, N.C.

A hand-written document titled “The New Year’s Eve Attack 2026” was found in Sturdivant’s bedroom trash can and included a section labeled, “martyrdom Op,” court papers claim.

In that screed, Sturdivant said he planned to attack police once they arrived on scene, dying a martyr for his twisted cause.

Another scrawl found in the bin was titled “Manifesto of Jihad,” the filing alleges.

The papers detailed a “Plan A,” or “Burger King Jihad,” and a “Plan B,” or “grocery store Jihad,” the affidavit alleges. It wasn’t clear if Sturdivant was purportedly targeting the same Burger King where he was employed.

In the first plan, Sturdivant’s goal was to injure “8 or more,” and in the second plan, he wanted to injure “11 or more,” the filing claims, by attacking “vital spots” in his victims’ “bodys[sic].”

Sturdivant “pledged himself to ISIS and committed himself to killing Americans on New Year’s Eve,” Barnacle said, specifically targeting Jews, Christians, and members of the LGBTQ community.

The suspect is charged with one count of attempted material support of ISIS and faces up to 20 years behind bars if convicted.

Sturdivant appeared in Charlotte federal court Friday morning and was held without bail.

Law enforcement also seized a black tactical vest with the label “TRX Built with Kevlar,” according to officials.USAO WDNC

As a 14-year-old, Sturdivant prompted an FBI probe in 2022 when he tried to leave his house dressed in all black and wielding a hammer and knife to kill a neighbor, the court papers allege.

His grandfather “was able to restrain” him and “bring him back to the house,” the filing claims.

Sturdivant started receiving psychiatric treatment following the incident and was kept off of social media, while his family kept knives and hammers secured away from him, according to Barnacle.

Despite those precautions, the suspect was allegedly radicalized by reading ISIS materials online and began engaging with other terror sympathizers on social media and in chat rooms, Ferguson said.

A lawyer for the suspect didn’t immediately return a request for comment Friday.

The bust follows last year’s ISIS-inspired New Orleans truck attack by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, in which 14 people were killed, and 57 others were injured on Bourbon Street as New Year’s Eve celebrations were winding down.
