Mamdani NYC health dept staff launch ‘Global Oppression Working Group’, accuse Israel of genocide

Employees of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Department of Health have created a “working group” that accuses Israel of committing genocide, The Post has learned.

The “Global Oppression and Public Health Working Group” held its first meeting Tuesday afternoon — the middle of the workday — with members gathering at the department’s headquarters in Long Island City, as well as remotely.

“We really developed in response to the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” one presenter said near the beginning of the meeting, according to video obtained by The Post.

Weeam Hammoudeh, a professor at Hunter College and committee member for the Palestine Global Mental Health Network, accused Israel of treating Palestinians as second-class citizens during the meeting.

“And the working group aims to address the growing interests among the health department staff to learn about current and ongoing global oppression in its many forms and how it influences the advancement of health equity,” the presenter said.

No mention of Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel that provoked the Jewish state’s retaliatory response and the brutal war in Gaza that followed was made during the more than one-hour presentation, according to a transcript of the meeting and a source who attended.

The flyer for the event was circulated near the elevator banks in the DOH building, a department employee said.

“This is a meeting using New York City Department of Health resources that promote libel against the Jewish people,” fumed Yael Halaas, president of the American Jewish Medical Association.

The “Global Oppression and Public Health Working Group” held its first meeting on Tuesday afternoon — the middle of the workday — with members gathering at the department’s headquarters in Long Island City, as well as remotely.

The one-sided politicization of the agency was “causing a rift among employees and sapping morale,” a Jewish DOH worker said.

“We just want to do our jobs to help New Yorkers and set the tone for public health,” the disgusted whistleblower said.

“The presentation talks about the suffering of Palestinians. Why? They never mention Hamas,” said the employee, who requested anonymity.

“We really developed in response to the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” one presenter said near the beginning of the meeting, according to video obtained by The Post.

The staffer also claimed that their woke colleagues never mention antisemitism when it comes to confronting oppression because they do not consider white Jews as victims.

Sarah Mckenney, a director of operations for the rapid response team at the DOH, was one of the organizers, and introduced the speakers.

Weeam Hammoudeh, a professor at Hunter College and committee member for the Palestine Global Mental Health Network, was one of the presenters — and accused Israel of treating Palestinians as second-class citizens during the meeting.

“So Palestinian citizens of Israel are citizens but they’re not considered nationals of the state so they’re more restricted in terms of the areas that they can live in and then some like jobs and other opportunities also require military service, and that creates another set of sort of disparities in outcomes,” she said.

She talked about the history of Israel and the “forced displacements and dispossession” of Palestinians and living in the “occupied territories.”

The Post reached out to the DOH and to the mayor’s office for comment.

Mamdani is a longtime Israel basher. He supports the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against the Jewish state and has himself accused Israel of commiting genocide in Gaza.

Putin Touts Energy Ties With China, While India Still Dodges Issue Of Russian Oil Ban

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a video link call on Wednesday, wherein Putin hailed Russia's energy relationship with China as "strategic" while emphasizing that Beijing has become Moscow's top buyer of oil and gas since the Ukraine 'special military operation' began.

The timing is the most notable aspect, given the call came just two days after Trump announced he would cut tariffs on Indian goods in exchange for New Delhi halting purchases of Russian crude. Trump also said Washington could lift an additional 25% penalty tariff imposed over India's energy cooperation with Moscow.

The curious thing is the lack of confirmation of the oil purchase cutoff from the Indian side. As yet, there's no clear indicator that this key element in the Modi-Trump deal has been ratified. On Wednesday FT reports India hails Donald Trump ‘deal’ but ducks discussing Russian oil ban. The reality remains that there are also technical problems with US crude imports replacing Russian...

"WTI is simply too light to be considered as Urals replacement" for refiners in India following this week’s announcement of a US-India deal on tariffs, June Goh, an analyst at Sparta Commodities said in a note.

And this is likely why Putin seized the opportunity to tout his energy ties with China. Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov has also reminded the world in a statement to TASS that Russia tops the list in terms of oil and pipe gas supplies to China.

"China continues to hold the first place among our foreign trade partners. Russia is fifth among the countries - trade counterparties of China. The task was set during the talk to take efforts for further development of trade and economic ties, in particular, for example, in the energy sphere. Russia is the top supplier of oil and pipe gas to China," Ushakov said.

Kremlin estimates say China has purchased more than $230 billion worth of Russian energy since the invasion.

Putin himself in the call acknowledged that bilateral trade saw a "slight decline" last year, including a "correction in indicators," but insisted Russia remains "among the leaders in energy supplies to China." He vowed the two will continue to closely coordinate together on a range of issues.

As for the India trade, Reuters reported earlier that Indian refiners have yet to receive instructions to fully stop buying Russian oil and are awaiting a formal government decision. Any official halt would be followed with a transition period, no doubt. Trump's earlier statements may have been too far out front compared to what Modi actually agreed or said yes to.

Hours after Xi and Putin spoke, President Trump also held a call with the Russian leader Wednesday. They last spoke by ‍phone in late November, at which time a conciliatory Trump praised America's "extremely strong" relations with China. Xinhua News Agency first revealed the Trump-Xi call, but no further details have been immediately forthcoming.

FDA demands better response from Abbott over Libre inspection violations

Abbott has been hit with a slew of complaints from the FDA in a warning letter related to its continuous glucose monitor (CGM) franchise, FreeStyle Libre.

Last October, an agency inspection of Abbott's diabetes care division in Alameda, California, “revealed that these devices are adulterated,” the FDA said in a warning letter dated Jan. 23 and added to its website Feb. 3. The agency took issue with Abbott's practices surrounding the “manufacture, packing, storage, or installation” of the products.

Abbott responded in November and December of last year, but the warning letter contends the company's responses were “inadequate.”

The FDA originally said Abbott did not give specific glucose sensor accuracy requirements to third-party manufacturers. Abbott was also accused of failing to ensure proper monitoring of products that are either in the manufacturing process or finished.

“We reviewed your firm’s responses and conclude that they are not adequate,” the FDA wrote in its warning letter.

The company's proposed “interim monitoring activities and proposed future testing” wouldn't ensure that the devices can meet “validated accuracy performance requirements,” the FDA said.

Abbott must “take prompt action to address any violations identified in this letter,” the FDA added.

Abbott said in a statement to Fierce MedTech that it is "committed to maintaining the highest standards of quality and reliability for people living with diabetes who depend on our technology every day. We take this matter seriously and are working diligently to address the FDA’s observations."

Back in November, Abbott launched an effort to replace some of its FreeStyle Libre 3 CGMs—following reports of hundreds of injuries and seven deaths worldwide—after some sensors showed they may provide incorrect readings that could prompt users to skip insulin doses.

Last month, Abbott’s full-year and fourth-quarter results saw its nutrition and diagnostics units drag on sales as the medtech continues to try to escape the headwinds from a China downturn, a post-COVID sales slump and the loss of a government contract for its nutrition business.
