Türkiye Says Fire From Iranian Side Killed Soldier at Iran Border Outpost

Ankara and Tehran have opened parallel investigations into the shooting, Türkiye’s Ministry of National Defense said on Thursday.

Infantry Contracted Private Yusuf Sait Ünlü was responding to an illegal crossing at the Engin Mayın border outpost when he was hit, according to the ministry.

“In the area of responsibility of the Engin Mayın Border Outpost on the Türkiye-Iran border, on Oct. 31, 2026, during an intervention in an illegal crossing, Infantry Contracted Private Yusuf Sait Ünlü was killed as a result of fire assessed to have come from the Iranian side,” the ministry said.

The statement came from spokesperson Rear Adm. Zeki Aktürk at the ministry’s weekly briefing in Ankara on Nov. 5.

It added a detail missing from the ministry’s first account. On Oct. 31, officials said only that Ünlü, assigned to the 7th Border Brigade Command, was wounded by gunfire during a border-crossing incident in Esendere, in Hakkari province’s Yüksekova district.

That account did not identify who fired.

Ünlü was airlifted to Hakkari State Hospital, where he died despite treatment. He was buried in Çine, his hometown in Aydın province.

Parallel Investigations

“Immediately after the incident, a judicial and administrative investigation was launched, and on Nov. 3, 2026, a meeting was held with Iranian officials at the scene,” the ministry said.

Iranian authorities have opened their own judicial and administrative inquiry, according to the ministry.

“Efforts to clarify all aspects of the incident are being carried out meticulously in coordination with Iranian authorities,” the statement added.

The ministry extended condolences to Ünlü’s family, the Turkish Armed Forces and the nation.

Border Patrols and Precedent

The mountainous Hakkari frontier with Iran is a focus of routine patrols against illegal crossings and smuggling.

In June 2020, gunfire from the Iranian side killed one Turkish soldier and wounded two others during a reconnaissance mission in the same Yüksekova district, Rudaw reported.

At the briefing, the ministry said 665 people had been caught at the borders in the recent period, eight of them members of terrorist organizations. Another 1,766 were stopped before crossing.

The incident comes amid wider regional strain over Iran, including Russia’s reported agreement to supply Tehran with missile launchers and Washington’s stance on resuming the Iran war.

Aktürk also offered condolences for Infantry Specialist Sgt. Oğuz Şahin, who died after falling ill on Nov. 2 near the Alparslan Border Outpost in Van province’s Çaldıran district.

DoorDash falls 13% on Instacart deal concerns

DoorDash shares plunged 13% on Thursday as investors assessed the potential risks of its planned $17 billion acquisition of Instacart. The deal, announced last week, is expected to face regulatory scrutiny and could take until late 2027 or early 2028 to close, leaving a lengthy period of uncertainty.

The transaction has also raised concerns about financing costs, integration challenges and increased pressure from retailers worried about the combined company's market power. DoorDash has instructed employees not to connect with Instacart staff on LinkedIn until the deal closes, reflecting requirements to keep both businesses operating independently pending approval.

Israel's largest Arab party to back Eisenkot as PM

Israel's largest Arab party, the Joint List, announced on Thursday that it decided unanimously to recommend the Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot to Israel's President Isaac Herzog as the country's next prime minister.

"The Joint List announced today, Thursday, that it will inform the President of the State, Isaac Herzog, this evening of its decision to recommend that Gadi Eisenkot be tasked with forming the government," the party said in a statement.

Following the elections, the Joint List won 11 seats in the next Knesset, which would bring the number of the Knesset members supporting Eisenkot to 67, over the 61-seat majority threshold. However, the Arab party's recommendation for Eisenkot as the prime minister does not necessarily mean that the party will ultimately join his coalition.

Pandemonium In Europe's Skies: Wave Of Bomb Threats Triggers Emergency Landings, Fighter Jet Intercepts

A slew of bomb threats against European airlines has resulted in mass reroutings and flight delays over European skies and at major hubs, amid a scramble to find out who is making these threats.

"At least 18 commercial flights in Europe had to deal with bomb threats Thursday, with at least one being diverted to a military base in France," CBS reports of the developing Thursday incidents.

AFP

"While authorities have reported no explosives discovered on any of the jets, and they all appeared to be hoaxes, Thursday's incidents add to a fast-growing number of journeys hit by similar threats this week," the report continues.

Some are calling it a "very deliberate act" - which seems coordinated to sow panic and flight disruptions. But authorities have come up with no workable theories or links to any entity behind it so far.

Earlier this week, security officials in the UK deemed that threats against about seven flights were hoaxes. By Thursday these 'hoax' threats had impacted at least 25 flights, disrupting travel for thousands.

And in some cases flights have had to be diverted midair. An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome early in the afternoon of Thursday had to land at a military air bace in France, the French government confirmed. Bomb units investigated the plane upon landing, after all 151 passengers and six crew members safely disembarked.

Based on CBS and international reporting, the below is a list of impacted or diverted flights thus far on Thursday:

  • Ireland–Italy Aer Lingus: Diverted to Evreux air base in France following a bomb threat; 157 passengers and crew deplaned safely for military inspection.
  • Finnair Flights: A Helsinki–Rome flight was escorted by fighter jets to Rome, briefly grounding airport operations, while a second Helsinki flight landed normally in Vienna.
  • Wizz Air Flights: Threat reports forced a Milan–Warsaw flight to reroute to Vienna and prompted security checks on a Bucharest-bound flight after a safe landing.
  • LOT Polish Airlines: A Warsaw–Brussels flight landed safely in Belgium, where security sweeps cleared the aircraft of any hazards.
  • Bulgarian Diverted Flights: Three Sofia-bound Ryanair flights made emergency landings across Bulgaria due to threat alerts; no explosives were found.
  • Prague Inbound Threats: Four incoming flights landed safely in the Czech capital and were cleared by police after security evaluations.
  • Milan Malpensa Inbound: Two flights from Thessaloniki and Porto landed safely following bomb alerts and underwent explosive inspections without diverting.
  • Madrid Barajas Threats: Three flights were impacted by bomb threats, but security forces quickly cleared all aircraft and ruled out the threats.

To be expected, some European media reports are immediately pointing the finger at Russian intelligence or proxies and 'hybrid warfare'.

The Guardian highlights the large geographic scope of the hoaxes and threats, writing:

Bomb threats have caused diversions and emergency landings for at least 15 flights across Europe, renewing questions about a possibly coordinated effort to disrupt travel.

The series of warnings on Thursday morning affected flights between Italy, Ireland, the UK, Spain, Bulgaria, Romania, Poland, Finland, Austria, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, Greece and Czechia.

On Tuesday seven planes across Europe were searched or diverted because of malicious hoax bomb alerts. On Monday a flight from the UK to Bulgaria was diverted after a threat that was apparently without substance.

The reports speculates that "simply creating disruption could be regarded as a success by those carrying out the hoaxes."

Likely as European security officials move into the investigative phase, there will be more and more finger-pointing at Russia or its allies, for example Belarus. However, at this early point European media has stressed that "Initial searches of some of the planes found nothing suspicious." Interestingly, almost all of the cases involved budget or low-cost carriers.
