'Merz: We do not believe in tariffs, protectionism'

 German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on Friday that the European Union does not "believe in tariffs and protectionism, but in free trade" in remarks at the Munich Security Conference aimed at the United States. He said that the MAGA culture war "is not ours" and that freedom of speech in Europe ends when "the words spoken are directed against human dignity and our basic law."

"Even the US is reaching the limits of its own power if it goes it alone," Merz warned. "Being a part of NATO is not only Europe's competitive advantage, it is also the United States' competitive advantage. So let's repair and revive transatlantic trust together. We, the Europeans, are doing our part," he said. He added that US President Trump "may have loyal followers, but democracies have partners and allies."
