Sam Altman's OpenAI considered contacting the Canadian authorities about the British Columbia shooting suspect and her ChatGPT activity, weeks before the deadly attack, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The suspect's interactions with the chatbot described scenarios involving gun use, but the AI company eventually decided not to reach out to the authorities. Although the suspect's account was banned, OpenAI staff concluded its activity could not be interpreted in such a way that it required to immediately alert the Canadian police.
The report comes amid a public debate about the use of AI chatbots for potential illicit activity, and whether tech companies should prioritize user privacy or reporting suspicious behavior to authorities.
