Uber Technologies, Inc. plans to tighten driver screening rules after reports claimed the company allowed people with criminal records to operate on its platform, according to The New York Times on Thursday.
The company previously blocked drivers convicted of murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, and terrorism. However, in 22 states, individuals with other violent crimes, child abuse, assault, and stalking convictions could still drive if those offenses were more than seven years old.
Investigations by the same media outlet also found that between 2017 and 2022, Uber received reports of sexual assault or misconduct in the United States roughly every eight minutes on average, a far higher frequency than the company had publicly indicated.
