US Supreme Court overturns Trump's tariffs

 The United States Supreme Court has struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping emergency tariffs, a centerpiece of his economic agenda. The ruling, issued on Friday after a heated legal battle, invalidates the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to unilaterally impose the broad measures.

In the majority opinion, the court agreed 6-3 that the tariffs exceeded the law. "The president asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the decision. She went on to say that "in light of the breadth, history, and constitutional context of that asserted authority, he [Trump] must identify clear congressional authorization to exercise it," concluding his power fell short.

In a dissenting opinion, Justice Kavanaugh warned that the ruling could trigger serious near-term consequences regarding the refund of billions of dollars that would significantly impact the U.S. Treasury, while the court offered no guidance on how the government should return the funds.
