Volkswagen Group CEO Oliver Blume is planning a drastic restructuring of the company that could put as many as 100,000 jobs at risk, CORRECTIV reported on Friday, citing sources.
The sources detailed that under the new plan, four car factories, including the ones in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Neckarsulm, could be closed. The company currently employs about 650,000 people across the world. The IG Metall union and Volkswagen's second biggest shareholder, the State of Lower Saxony, are both against such moves.
Blume is set to present the strategy to the supervisory board on July 9. Apart from layoffs, he also plans to spin off the core Volkswagen brand.
