The White House asked OpenAI to delay the launch of its newest AI model, ChatGPT 5.6, due to security concerns, the Information reported on Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the issue.
According to the sources, the AI giant's CEO, Sam Altman, broke the news to staff, revealing that GPT 5.6 will be released in a limited capacity for a select group of partners, at Washington's request. Previously, the Trump administration demanded that Anthropic limit its powerful new AI models amid rising cybersecurity concerns. Altman reportedly stated that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick cautioned him against launching the new AI chatbot model without seeking approval from other government agencies. Furthermore, Altman was said to have informed the government that the company does not view it as an ideal long-term model and will seek to "achieve a more sustainable approach for future releases."
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump declared that Anthropic is not a national security threat, despite Washington's move.
