A broad coalition of automakers, suppliers, and dealers is urging US President Donald Trump to maintain barriers that effectively keep Chinese vehicles out of the American market, ahead of a planned US-China summit next week that could include a role for Chinese electric-vehicle giant BYD Co.
In a letter to Trump, the group said existing restrictions are important for maintaining fair competition and cited security and economic risks from subsidized Chinese vehicles.
"Allowing them to open a domestic facility would provide a foothold in the US market at the expense of manufacturers operating here," according to the letter. "Localized Chinese production will not advance the administration's manufacturing jobs and national security agendas."
