Iranians are victims of decisions made by their own authorities and of repeated episodes of mass repression, Jérôme Bonnafont, France’s UN ambassador and president of the Security Council for September, said as he outlined the council’s Iran agenda.
“They are the victims of the choices made by the Iranian authorities for years now, with these episodes of mass repression,” Bonnafont told reporters.
He said Iran’s nuclear program would be at the center of Security Council discussions this month.
“At the heart of our discussions on Iran this month will be the nuclear issue,” Bonnafont said. “We will look at the noncompliance of Iran with its nuclear obligations and the consequences arising therefrom.”
Bonnafont said the talks would also take place against the backdrop of tensions in the Persian Gulf and restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
“The full freedom of navigation has not been restored in the Strait of Hormuz,” he said, adding that the disruption was having “extremely adverse consequences” for developing economies and global food security.
The Security Council is also due this month to discuss the sanctions committee tied to Iran’s nuclear program and vote on renewing the mandate of a panel of experts linked to sanctions restored in September 2025.
