How compression therapy can help medical conditions

Compression therapy, in which pressure is applied to certain areas of the body, has been proven to help with specific medical issues and is relatively easy to use.

“Compression for lower extremities helps prevent or decrease swelling seen in the lower legs or when the legs are in a dependent position, sitting or standing,” Danielle Bajakian, M.D., a vascular surgeon at Columbia University Irving Medical Center in New York, told Fox News Digital.

Here’s a deeper dive and what to know.

What is compression therapy?

Compression therapy can be used to help improve blood flow and decrease perceived muscle soreness related to exercise and activity.

That’s according to Chicago-based Leo Arguelles, PT, DPT, a spokesperson with the American Physical Therapy Association.

“It is most commonly used in the case of sleeves worn on the lower legs, but it can also be used for the upper extremities,” he said.

He said types may include:

  • Compression bandaging
  • Compression garments or sleeves
  • Taping
  • Total contact casting
  • Pneumatic compression devices (sleeves worn around legs that fill with air and squeeze)

Who can benefit from compression therapy?

Dr. Bajakian of Columbia University said patients who most commonly benefit from this are those with venous insufficiency or deep vein thrombosis.

Others who can benefit: pregnant women in their second and third trimester, when their blood volume increases; patients with lymphedema (a build-up of lymph fluid in the fatty tissues just under the skin); and patients with heart failure or other medical conditions that prevent venous return, resulting in leg edema.

Should people buy OTC compression clothing?

For most patients with mild symptoms, OTC compression clothing works well, Dr. Bajakian said.

“The keys to effective compression garments are compliance and fit,” she added.

For a compression garment to work, the fit needs to be snug.

For socks, there are usually sizing guidelines for calf circumference and leg length from knee to ankle, she said.

Walking and exercising the legs, especially the calf muscles, can help with venous insufficiency as well, said one medical expert.Getty Images/iStockphoto

“They should fit tightly around the ankle and looser as they get higher toward the knee,” Dr. Bajakian noted.

“Regarding compliance, over the counter brands offer an array of styles and fabrics that work with different lifestyles,” she also noted. “I often see better compliance with those than a medical grade compression garment.”

She clarified that for patients with severe symptoms or diagnoses such as lymphedema, medical-grade compression garments are essential.

When else can compression therapy be helpful?

Sunil Iyer, M.D., FACC, an interventional cardiologist and vascular medicine specialist with Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute in Wilmington, North Carolina, told Fox News Digital that for people who are on their feet for long periods of time — or who are going for long car rides or airplane rides — graduated compression stockings can help with the swelling and discomfort that may come from the blood pooling in the ankles.

“This can even help varicose veins not to form or not to be as engorged and painful,” Dr. Iyer said.

Compression stockings are part of the treatment, he said.

In addition, walking and exercising the legs, especially the calf muscles, can help with venous insufficiency as well, he said.

“Diet is also important. Patients may note that the swelling is worse after they drink a lot of fluids or eat a lot of salt,” he said.

Do people need to speak to a doctor before they buy compression socks?

For patients with minimal medical problems who are looking to improve vein health, there is no need to consult a physician prior to buying compression stockings, said Dr. Bajakian.

“However, patients who are at risk of blood clots or who have unexplained leg swelling should seek out a doctor for a workup,” she said.

Antisemitic incidents in US surge 337% since Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack: ADL

The US has seen more reported antisemitic incidents since Oct. 7 than any two months in about 45 years, when the Anti-Defamation League started keeping such statistics, the group said Monday.

There were 2,031 antisemitic incidents reported in the US between Oct. 7 — when Hamas terrorists attacked Israel — and Dec. 7, according to preliminary data released by the ADL.

That figure is a staggering 337% spike compared to the same two-month time frame in 2022, when there were 465 incidents documented.

The number also is nearly triple the previous roughly 45-year high over a two-month span: October and November of last year, when 741 incidents were recorded, an ADL rep told The Post.

The ADL, which was founded in 1913 and began recording antisemitic incidents in 1979, called the increase “unprecedented.”

The shocking numbers cover 40 physical assaults, 337 instances of vandalism, 749 incidents of harassment and 905 rallies that involved antisemitic rhetoric and support for terrorism against Israel, the ADL said.

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement that Jewish communities are being engulfed by hate – and there is no sign of it receding.

“This terrifying pattern of antisemitic attacks has been relentless since the Israel-Hamas war began on Oct. 7, with no signs of diminishing,” Greenblatt said.

“The lid to the sewers is off, and Jewish communities all across the country are being inundated with hate,” he said.

Addressing growing antisemitism on university campuses, Greenblatt added, “Public officials and college leaders must turn down the temperature and take clear action to show this behavior is unacceptable to prevent more violence.”

The ADL included in its statistics the death of a Jewish man and pro-Israel supporter, Paul Kessler, 69, who was killed during a clash with a pro-Palestinian protester in California last month.

While a suspect was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, he is not facing hate-crime charges.

At least 1,411 of the recent US incidents are said to be connected to the Israel-Hamas war, which has led to tense protests over the Jewish state’s military campaign in Gaza.

About 250 antisemitic incidents targeted Jewish institutions including synagogues and campus Hillels, the group said.

About 400 antisemitic incidents have happened on college campuses — another sharp rise compared to the same time period last year when there were only 33 incidents.

There was also a jump in vandalism and harassment of businesses that are Jewish or Israeli-owned, according to the ADL.

“Vandalism of a Jewish business isn’t political protest – it’s antisemitism, and it’s criminal,” Greenblatt said. “Boycotts have historically targeted the Jewish community at times of crisis, and it’s alarming that it’s happening again now.”

The White House previously announced a national strategy in May to address antisemitism.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, said at the lighting of a massive menorah in front of the White House last week to mark the start of Hanukkah that American Jews are “feeling alone” and “in pain.”

US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also sounded the alarm late last month over a “spike in antisemitism” that he said was fueled by pro-Hamas “dogwhistles” at protests denouncing Israel.

Video Reveals Democrats Stuffed Nearly 3,000 Illegals Into Chicago Warehouse

A new video has surfaced on X showing the location of a warehouse in the Chicago metro area where nearly 3,000 illegal migrants have been packed into. This comes as the US southern border continues to spiral out of control as disastrous open border policies by the Biden administration have flooded major metro areas with hundreds of thousands of illegals, if not more.

"I honestly couldn't believe it when I first heard it. 2700 illegals being housed in a warehouse in south Chicago (2241 S. Halsted St)," Ben Bergquam, a reporter for Real America's Voice News, said in a post on X.

Bergquam continued, "People have no idea how bad this is going to get! The truth about the Democrat's illegal invasion: drugs, prostitution, child trafficking, and modern-day slavery."

In late September, local media CBS 2 reported that the 2241 S. Halsted St. warehouse would house upwards of 400 families with children, with plans to expand to 1,000. If Bergquam's figures are correct, the warehouse is quickly running out of room.

Just last week, sources with the Customs and Border Protection confirmed to Fox News that Tuesday was the largest single-day illegal migrant encounter ever on the US-Mexico border.

According to the Federation for American Immigration Reform, since President Biden took office, there have been more than 9 million illegal entries into the US on the southern border.

Meanwhile, other failing progressive metro areas, like New York City, are being overrun by illegal migrants.

It's not hard to recognize why Democrats are welcoming illegals with open arms ahead of the 2024 election cycle:

And this.

While Democrats lose the black vote...

Democrats are focused on a new voting base coming over the southern border.
