Dr. Phil calls on Biden to take cognitive test: ‘People that have nothing to hide, hide nothing’

Dr. Phil McGraw called on President Biden to take a cognitive test — as concerns about the 81-year-old’s mental acuity grow.

The author and former TV psychologist spoke out during an appearance on the “Overtime” segment of Bill Maher’s talk show Friday night.

“Dr. Phil, do you think President Biden should take a cognitive exam?” Maher asked.

“People that have nothing to hide, hide nothing,” McGraw responded.

“So, why not?” he added, to applause from the studio audience.

The White House has insisted that Biden, the oldest president in US history, has suffered no age-related cognitive decline.

“The president doesn’t need a cognitive test. That is not my assessment, that is the assessment of the president’s doctor,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday.

Biden “passes a cognitive test every day — every day — as he moves from one topic to another topic,” Jean-Pierre said.

Maher jabbed at Biden and highlighted the president’s apparent mental decline on his show.MAX

But special counsel Robert Hur, in a blistering report released Feb. 8, said Biden should not face criminal charges for his alleged mishandling of classified documents because a jury would perceive him as a “sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

In public remarks last month, Biden claimed on three occasions to have recently spoken with long-dead foreign leaders, then confused the leaders of Mexico and Egypt at a strident press conference called to refute Hur’s conclusions about his mental state.

More than 80% of registered voters in a poll of seven battleground states said the incumbent is “too old” for office, according to a a Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey released Thursday.

Earlier in Friday’s show, Maher offered a brutal commentary on Biden’s age — in which the comedian delivered a mock State of the Union address as the 46th president while using a walker.

“Just admit it, say yes, I’m bad with names and I walk like a toddler with a full diaper,” Maher jabbed.

UK MHRA okays first drug from Amgen under new mutual recognition scheme

A new formulation of Amgen’s cancer treatment Xgeva is the first to be approved in the UK under a new procedure designed to speed up access to new therapies.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has cleared a prefilled syringe version of Xgeva (denosumab) – used to treat a form of bone cancer, as well as some tumours that have spread to bone from other areas of the body – under the International Recognition Procedure (IRP) introduced at the start of the year.

The new product was approved in 30 days via the IRP, which was developed as a consequence of the UK’s departure from the EU and replaces the European Commission’s centralised procedure (ECDRP), which came to an end on 31st December last year.

In a statement, the MHRA said the IRP allows “medicines that have been approved in other countries with stringent regulators will get to UK patients without delay, resulting in a more rapid, efficient, and cost-effective process for life sciences companies.”

The prefilled syringe version of Xgeva can be self-administered by patients or given by healthcare workers and offers a more convenient option than the current vial formulation of the drug, simplifying administration, reducing the amount of liquid that needs to be injected, and helping to avoid dosing errors.

Its approval by the MHRA follows a positive opinion from the EMA’s human medicines committee, the CHMP, on 25th January. The IRP route is open to marketing applications that have been granted in Australia, Canada, the EU, Japan, Switzerland, Singapore, and the US.

Industry has been broadly in favour of the new option, with the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) saying it gives regulatory flexibility, but it has some limitations.

For example, most innovative products will fall under a category that can have the review paused via a ‘clock stop’, which the trade organisation has said is not as favourable as the ECDRP. The UK government, meanwhile, has held the IRP up as an example of the freedom afforded by Brexit.

“I’m very pleased to announce that we have granted the first approval through IRP in 30 days, demonstrating that this new process for bringing new medicines to UK patients is well under way,” commented MHRA interim executive director Julian Beach.

“We’re assured that the appropriate regulatory standards for the approval of this medicine have been met,” he added. “As with all products, we will keep its safety under close review.”

Trump wins the Missouri caucuses

Former President Donald Trump continued his march toward the GOP nomination on Saturday, winning the Missouri caucuses and adding to his delegate haul at a party convention in Michigan. Idaho Republicans planned to caucus later.

Nikki Haley, the former U.N. ambassador who is his last major rival, was still searching for her first election-year win.

The next event on the Republican calendar is Sunday in the District of Columbia. Two days later is Super Tuesday, when 16 states will hold primaries on what will be the largest day of voting of the year outside of the November election. Trump is on track to lock up the nomination days later.

The steep odds facing Haley were on display in Columbia, Missouri, where Republicans gathered at a church to caucus.

Seth Christensen stood on stage and called on them to vote for Haley. He wasn't well received.

Another caucusgoer shouted out from the audience: “Are you a Republican?”

An organizer quieted the crowd and Christensen finished his speech. Haley went on to win just 37 of the 263 Republicans in attendance in Boone County.

MICHIGAN

Michigan Republicans at their convention in Grand Rapids began allocating 39 of the state’s 55 GOP presidential delegates. Trump won 36, with three yet to be allocated.

But a significant portion of the party’s grassroots force was skipping the gathering because of the lingering effects of a monthslong dispute over the party's leadership.

Trump handily won Michigan’s primary this past Tuesday with 68% of the vote compared with Haley’s 27%.

Michigan Republicans were forced to split their delegate allocation into two parts after Democrats, who control the state government, moved Michigan into the early primary states, violating the national Republican Party’s rules.

MISSOURI

Voters lined up outside a church in Columbia, home to the University of Missouri, before the doors opened for the caucuses. Once they got inside, they heard appeals from supporters of the candidates.

“Every 100 days, we’re spending $1 trillion, with money going all over the world. Illegals are running across the border,” Tom Mendenall, an elector for Trump in 2016 and 2020, said to the crowd. He later added: “You know where Donald Trump stands on a lot of these issues.”

Christensen, a 31-year-old from Columbia who came to the caucus with his wife and three children age 7, 5, and 2, then urged Republicans to go in a new direction.

“I don’t need to hear about Mr. Trump’s dalliances with people of unsavory character, nor do my children,” Christensen said to the room. “And if we put that man in the office, that’s what we’re going to hear about all the time. And I’m through with it.”

Supporters quickly moved to one side of the room or the other, depending on whether they favored Trump or Haley. There was little discussion between caucusgoers after they chose a side.

This year was the first test of the new system, which is almost entirely run by volunteers on the Republican side.

The caucuses were organized after GOP Gov. Mike Parson signed a 2022 law that, among other things, canceled the planned March 12 presidential primary.

Lawmakers failed to reinstate the primary despite calls to do so by both state Republican and Democratic party leaders. Democrats will hold a party-run primary on March 23.

Trump prevailed twice under Missouri's old presidential primary system.

IDAHO

Last year, Idaho lawmakers passed cost-cutting legislation that was intended to move all the state’s primaries to the same date in May. But the bill inadvertently eliminated the presidential primaries entirely.

The Republican-led Legislature considered holding a special session to reinstate the presidential primaries but failed to agree on a proposal in time, leaving both parties with presidential caucuses as the only option.

The Democratic caucuses aren’t until May 23.

The last GOP caucuses in Idaho were in 2012, when about 40,000 of the state’s nearly 200,000 registered Republican voters showed up to select their preferred candidate.

For this year, all Republican voters who want to participate will have to attend in person. They will vote after hearing short speeches by the candidates or their representatives.

If one candidate gets more than 50% of the statewide votes, that candidate will win all the Idaho delegates. If none of the candidates gets more than 50% of the votes, then each candidate with at least 15% of the total votes will get a proportionate number of delegates.

The Idaho GOP will announce the results once all the votes are counted statewide.

'Harris to meet Israeli war cabinet member on Monday'

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will meet with Israeli war cabinet member Benny Gantz at the White House on Monday as Washington seeks to reach a deal for a temporary ceasefire and increase the flow of aid to Gaza.

The talks, first reported by Reuters, are expected to span topics including reducing Palestinian civilian casualties, securing a temporary ceasefire, the release of hostages held in Gaza and increasing aid to the territory, a White House official said.

"The Vice President will express her concern over the safety of the as many as 1.5 million people in Rafah," the official said, adding that Israel also had a "right to defend itself in the face of continued Hamas terrorist threats."

A statement from Gantz confirmed that he would meet with Harris, as well as with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Republican and Democratic members of U.S. Congress.

"Minister Gantz personally updated the prime minister on his own initiative on Friday of his intention to travel, in order to coordinate the messages to be transmitted in the meetings," the statement said.

Gantz, Israel's former military chief and defense minister, is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's main political rival in opinion polls. His trip to Washington risks upsetting Netanyahu, who has been subject to criticism by U.S. President Joe Biden.

In December, Biden said that Israel was losing support over its "indiscriminate" bombing of Gaza and that Netanyahu should change, exposing a rift in relations with the Israeli prime minister.

Harris and Gantz will also discuss planning for after the war ends to revitalize Gaza under the Palestinian Authority, the White House official said.

The U.S. military on Saturday carried out its first airdrop of humanitarian aid into Gaza and aid agencies warned of a growing humanitarian disaster in the Palestinian enclave as Israel pressed on with its offensive.

Why Is Gritstone Bio Stock Trading Lower?

shares are trading lower after the company announced an approximately 40% reduction of its workforce

The move comes following the recently announced delay of the proposed CORAL Phase 2b study, which resulted in Gritstone not receiving the external funding it previously anticipated, beginning in the first quarter of 2024, associated with the initiation of the study.

In September, Gritstone Bio was awarded a contract by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to conduct a Phase 2b comparative study evaluating its self-amplifying mRNA (samRNA) vaccine candidate containing Spike plus other viral targets to protect against COVID-19.

Under the contract, Gritstone Bio was supposed to conduct a 10,000-participant, randomized Phase 2b double-blinded study to compare the efficacy, safety, and immunogenicity of the Gritstone next-generation COVID-19 vaccine candidate with an approved COVID-19 vaccine.

“The lack of near-term funding necessitated this difficult step to fortify our balance sheet and cash position, which unfortunately means an impact to our workforce,” said Andrew Allen, co-founder, president and CEO.

“We continue to gather GRANITE data and remain excited about sharing our first dataset later this quarter,” Allen added.

Gritstone’s core programs and anticipated milestones remain unchanged.

Preliminary data from the Phase 2 portion of the Phase 2/3 study evaluating GRANITE, Gritstone’s personalized cancer vaccine, in front-line metastatic, microsatellite-stable colorectal cancer (MSS-CRC), remain expected in the first quarter of 2024.

Congress Must Investigate John Podesta's Role In Biden's LNG Decision

by Larry Behrens via RealClear Wire,

Ever since 2016, talk to a liberal and there’s a good chance that they will blame “Russia” for something. Election interference, inflation, record-high gas prices, the list goes on and on. Since taking office, Joe Biden continues to take this deflection to a new level. As a gallon of gas soared past $5 in the summer of 2022 it was all Russia’s fault. And who can forget the ill-fated #PutinsPriceHike campaign as Team Biden tried to dodge criticism for skyrocketing inflation.

Letters Warn “You Cannot Keep Your Doctor” Freaking Out Thousands

Does anyone recall the Obamacare promise “you can keep your doctor”. Up to 100,000 people might find out otherwise in one big bang. More are likely on deck.

Freaking Out

Patients are caught in the middle of contract disputes between hospitals and health insurers. As a result, people are Freaking Out. Letters Warn Patients They Risk Losing Their Doctor

Patients are getting ominous warnings in their mail and inboxes: They are about to lose insurance coverage of their doctors.

The threatening letters and emails have sent patients reeling. Unsure what to make of it all, they are flooding doctors with calls asking questions, snapping up appointments with the physicians and taking to social media to complain.

Sparring in New York City are health insurers such as giants UnitedHealthcare and Aetna, which pay for medical care, and big-name hospital systems like NewYork-Presbyterian and Mount Sinai Health System seeking more money for the treatment provided by their doctors.

NewYork-Presbyterian said the insurer has failed to offer enough. Aetna said the hospital system’s demands are unsupportable. Both declined to say what rate increases they are seeking.

If hospitals and insurance companies fail to agree on a contract, patients can lose not only some or even all of their health plan’s coverage, but they may also pay a doctor’s higher, non-negotiated rates.

The hospital system sought new terms because of rising labor costs and its analysis of newly public hospital pricing data indicated Mount Sinai wasn’t paid as well as its competitors, said Brent Estes, Mount Sinai’s chief managed-care officer.

UnitedHealthcare said Mount Sinai’s proposals would increase its rates by 43% to 58% over three to four years. “We continue to await a realistic proposal from Mount Sinai that’s affordable and sustainable for New Yorkers and employers,” the company said.

As boomers get older demands for medical care services will explode.
