Biden acquaintance kept in jury pool for Hunter fed trial as others dismissed on stances on gun rights, DOJ

Hunter Biden made history Monday, becoming the first child of a sitting president to stand trial on federal criminal charges.

US District Judge Maryellen Noreika swore in the pool of prospective jurors at 8:46 a.m., kicking off a politically charged case in a state where President Biden has been the most powerful political figure for decades.

Roughly 250 Delaware residents were summoned for jury selection, with 12 jurors and four alternates making up the final panel that will hear the case.

As of the afternoon, the judge had brought in 57 potential jurors to question them one-by-one outside of the presence of the other possible panelists.

Of that group, Noreika dismissed 22 people who said they could not be impartial or who had scheduling conflicts.

One man, juror 1, was let go because he declared that owning guns is “a God-given right” while another was dismissed after saying he believed the Department of Justice was too political.

Another woman, juror 40, said people shouldn’t be allowed to buy guns and “kill children in schools.”

“I’d ban [guns] altogether to be honest,” she added, before the judge dismissed her.

Several members of the pool of potential jurors own at least one gun, while others have relatives who have struggled with drug and alcohol addiction

Jurors 26 and 29 — both let into the pool — have concealed carry permits in more than one state.

“I believe our Second Amendment is very important,” juror 26 said.

One woman, juror 2, qualified for the pool after saying she had donated to and volunteered for the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2008, though she maintained “I don’t see any relation between politics” and this case.

Charges against Hunter Biden

COUNT 1: False Statement in Purchase of a Firearm

Faces a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, three years of supervised release, a special assessment of $100.

COUNT 2: False Statement Related to Information Required to be Kept by Federal Firearms Licensed Dealer

Faces a maximum of five years’ imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, three years of supervised release, a special assessment of $100.

COURT 3: Possession of a Firearm by a Person who is an Unlawful User of or Addicted to a Controlled Substance

Faces a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of $250,000, three years of supervised release, a special assessment of $100.

Another woman, juror 3, qualified after admitting her sister was convicted a decade ago on credit card fraud and drug charges. The prospective juror said her relative was “currently clean” and insisted she could be fair.

One qualified woman, juror 5, revealed she had once worked for the Secret Service and her husband was still employed by the protective agency.

One man, juror 25, was let into the pool after he said he was “an acquaintance with the first lady” and had met Joe Biden at several events.

He added that he recently donated to the Republican National Committee and was a campaign manager for a city councilman years ago.

It wasn’t clear if the prospective panelist was aware that Jill Biden was present in court Monday.

One man, juror 33, was let into the pool despite his dad being shot and killed in 2004 and his brother serving time for narcotics possession.

Prospective juror 38 told the judge her childhood best friend fatally overdosed on heroin and said her family owns rifles which they hunt with. She explained she doesn’t personally own a firearm and said she could be a fair juror.

The initial pool will be made up of 36 prospective jurors, with prosecutors and the defense team given a total of 20 strikes to remove would-be panelists from the final allotment.

The court is on a break until 2:30 p.m. when they will bring in another 20 potential jurors in order to fill the last two spots in the pool.

They needed 36 prospective jurors to end up with a final jury and alternates, totaling 16, after both sides used their combined 20 strikes.

Hunter Biden, 54, has pleaded not guilty to three felony counts pertaining to his alleged illegal possession of a firearm while addicted to crack cocaine.

The Delaware case is the first of two scheduled to take place this year.

Hunter Biden also faces tax charges out of Los Angeles, with prosecutors led by special counsel David Weiss accusing him of stiffing Uncle Sam on $1.4 million in taxes between 2016 and 2019.

The first son has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The Delaware case is expected to last one to two weeks.

Noreika, a Trump appointee backed by the state’s Democratic senators, has been deeply involved in the Hunter Biden case for nearly a year.

In July, she presided over the implosion of a prospective plea deal between Hunter and Weiss after the two sides couldn’t agree on whether the first son would be protected from future charges.

Weiss, who has been Delaware’s US Attorney since 2018, was granted special counsel authority by Attorney General Merrick Garland in August of last year.

Hunter Biden is being represented by a team of several lawyers, led by well-known defense attorney Abbe Lowell, who has an extensive history of defending famous clientele in the courtroom.

The firearm case dates back to the Oct. 12, 2018 purchase of a .38 caliber Colt Cobra revolver at a Delaware gun shop. To acquire that handgun, background checks required Hunter to certify that he was not addicted to illicit drugs.

President Biden maintains that he’s proud of his son.AP

That year, the younger Biden was deep in the throes of a crack cocaine addiction, as documented by evidence from his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things,” leaked laptop contents and scores of witnesses.

Eleven days after the revolver purchase, his sister-in-law turned lover Hallie Biden disposed of it in a trash can near a local supermarket, right across the street from a high school, according to police records.

An enraged Hunter Biden demanded she fetch the weapon, only for her to discover it was no longer there. The gun was later returned by a man who regularly rummages through trash.

The first son’s trial begins in the aftermath of a Manhattan jury voting May 30 to convict former President Donald Trump of 34 counts of falsification of business documents to conceal hush money payments.

That conviction sparked an uproar among congressional Republicans, who have long had Hunter Biden in their crosshairs and alleged that prosecutors initially gave the first son a “sweetheart” deal.

President Biden, who was with Hunter at the family’s Rehoboth Beach vacation home over the weekend, weighed in on the verdict against his rival Trump, saying “The justice system should be respected, and we should never allow anyone to tear it down.”

Now the justice system — led by his own administration — will evaluate whether his son should be tossed in jail.

4 hostages, including British Israeli man, murdered in Hamas captivity in Gaza, Israel says

Four hostages including a British Israeli citizen have been murdered in Hamas captivity in the Gaza Strip, according to the Israeli military.

Nadav Popplewell, 51, who was taken from Kibbutz Nirim, was confirmed dead by Israeli officials on Monday — along with Israelis Chaim Peri, 79, Yoram Metsger, 80, and Amiram Cooper, 84, who were taken from Kibbutz Nir Oz,  the Times of Israel reports.

Nadav Popplewell was reportedly murdered in Gaza while being held hostage by Hamas.

Hamas previously claimed that all four were killed in Israeli airstrikes. The circumestances of their deaths was not immediately clear.

Their bodies remain in the Gaza Strip.

“We estimate that the four were killed together, in the Khan Younis area, several months ago, while being held by Hamas terrorists and while IDF forces were operating in Khan Younis,” Israel Defense Forfes spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said.

“We are examining the circumstances of death in-depth, looking into all possibilities, and we will present the findings as soon as possible, firstly to the families and then to the public,” he added.

Popplewell was last seen alive in a Hamas propaganda video released in early May, with the short, 10-second clip showing Popplewell with a black eye.

Popplewell was described as a family man who loved playing card games with friends and reading science fiction, according to Bring Them Home Now, an Israeli organization set up by the hostages’ families.

Members of Kibbutz Nirim shared the news of Popplewell’s death, with the community expressing its condolences to his family.

“It is with deep sadness that we have now been informed of the death of our friend Nadav Popplewell in the captivity of Hamas in Gaza,” the kibbutz statement said. “We mourn and are hurt by the death of Nadav and share in the deep mourning of Channah, Ayelet, and the family and embrace them.”

Popplewell’s brother was killed in the Oct. 7 terrorist attack, and Peri was among the 24 hostages freed on Nov. 24 as part of a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Like Popplewell, Chaim Peri, Yoram Metsger, and Amiram Cooper were all featured in a Hamas propaganda videos claiming the men were killed in an Israeli airstrike last December.

Peri – a film lecturer and activist – was seen pleading for the group’s release, which never came.

Peri, from left, Cooper and Metzger are seen in Hamas captivity.

He was abducted from his home on the kibbutz while trying to shield his wife behind a couch, according to his family.

Metzger, who had diabetes and suffered from a broken hip, was kidnapped alongside his wife, 78-year-old Tamar Metzger, who was released in mid-November.

Cooper, an economist, was one of the founders of Kibbutz Nir Oz, and was also kidnapped with his wife, Nurit, who was released on Oct. 23.

With the death of the four men verified, the Israeli military has now confirmed the deaths of 41 of the 124 hostages who remain in Gaza.

Cease-fire talks between Israel and Hamas have remained in limbo following the first wave of hostage releases in November, with the US pushing a proposal last week that it said was amenble to the Israeli side.

The US-backed deal calls for a six-week truce and the release of all the hostages, including the bodies of the dead in exchange for freeing Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails and an increase in humanitarian aid in Gaza.

President Biden acknowledged that it would be difficult to keep the proposal on track, but urged Israel and Hamas to reach an agreement.

US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Monday that Hamas is the only party that was stalling the ceasefire talks.

“The world should know — the Palestinian people should know — that the only thing standing in the way of an immediate ceasefire today is Hamas,” Miller told reporters.

“The proposal on the table is nearly identical to what Hamas said it would accept just a few weeks ago, and it is now time for them to act,” he added.

But far-right Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gvir have threatened to break up the government if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accepts the deal.

Netanyahu has reiterated that the war will not end until Hamas is destroyed and Gaza no longer poses a threat to the Jewish state.

Netanyahu Open to Cease-Fire if He Can Resume Fighting

Allegedly there is a step towards a cease-fire in Gaza. But the headline appears to be massively contradictory noise.

The Babylon Bee, no strike that, the Wall Street Journal reports Netanyahu Signals Openness to Cease-Fire but Wants Option to Resume Fighting

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed cautious support for an initiative by President Biden to end the war in Gaza, with the Israeli leader saying on Monday that he is open to a temporary cease-fire to release hostages but wants a free hand to resume fighting Hamas.

Netanyahu told the lawmakers that during later negotiations for a permanent cease-fire he would insist on freeing all the hostages and destroying the military and governance capabilities of Hamas, according to the official. Those demands are likely to be nonstarters for Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.

The proposal allows Israel to preserve the right to renew fighting at any time Israel senses that the negotiations are futile,” the Israeli official said.

Forever Destruction of Hamas

Please recall my October 14, 2023 post Israel Promises Lengthy, Lethal, Powerful and Forever Destruction of Hamas

Israel has consistently repeated that message ever since. With that in mind, let’s discuss the peace proposal.

Four Conditions For Peace

  • Hamas must be totally destroyed, forever
  • There will be a cease-fire as soon as Hamas agrees to demand #1 and frees all the hostages
  • Should Israel decide that Hamas is not totally destroyed, the peace offer is off
  • Israel does not have to agree that Palestinians have any rights whatsoever

In other news, I am open to becoming a vegetarian as long as I can continue to eat meat. We can dramatically increase the number of vegetarians if it’s voluntary,

Might I suggest that giving up meat one day a week is sufficient?

Netanyahu Shell Games

This BS peace proposal has one goal.

That goal to convince Biden that Israel is open to meaningful talks without Netanyahu being open to anything of substance.

Onus on Hamas

To press for the one-sided deal, the WSJ reported Secretary of State Antony Blinken made calls over the weekend to two top Israeli decision makers, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and war cabinet member Benny Gantz, praising Israel for considering a cease-fire agreement and saying that the onus was now on Hamas to accept a deal.

Onus on Vegetarians

Similarly, the onus is on vegetarians to accept my offer to expand the number of vegetarians by allowing them to eat meat six days a week.

A related news flash just popped up on my screen. Ants have taken a poll calling for the destruction of anteaters.

As soon as anteaters agree to the demands of ants, there will be peace. The onus is now on anteaters to accept a truce.

Conclusion

The WSJ reports “Biden’s speech was designed to put pressure on Hamas to do a deal, said Mairav Zonszein, a senior Israel analyst for the International Crisis Group.”

Yes indeed.

And my proposal puts pressure on vegetarians to come to grips as to what the term really means. Similar discussions are now underway between ants and anteaters.

Biden vetoes congressional disapproval of SEC accounting bulletin on crypto assets

U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday vetoed a congressional disapproval of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's accounting bulletin on crypto assets.

"By virtue of invoking the Congressional Review Act, this Republican-led resolution would inappropriately constrain the SEC's ability to set forth appropriate guardrails and address future issues," Biden said in a statement released by the White House.
