Zelenskiy hopes Europe, US will be involved in Ukraine peace talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy hopes Europe and the United States will be involved in any talks about ending his country's war with Russia, he told reporters on Saturday.

At a joint press conference with President Maia Sandu of neighbouring Moldova, Zelenskiy said Ukraine also needed to be involved in any discussions on ending the war for such negotiations to have any meaningful impact.

"As for what the set-up of the talks will be: Ukraine, I really hope Ukraine will be there, America, Europe and the Russians," Zelenskiy said, later clarifying that no framework was yet established.

"Yes, I would really want that Europe would take part, because we will be members of the European Union."

Zelenskiy said he believed new U.S. President Donald Trump could end the war, but he could only do so if he involved Ukraine in the talks.

"Otherwise it will not work. Because Russia does not want to end the war, while Ukraine wants to end it," he said.

Trump promised during his campaign he would end the war within 24 hours of taking office, but his aides have since said a deal could take months.

The U.S. president has expressed willingness to speak to Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war.

On Friday, Putin said he would like to meet Trump to talk about Ukraine. He cited a 2022 decree from Zelenskiy barring talks with Putin as a barrier to negotiations.

At the press conference, Zelenskiy said he introduced this prohibition to stop Putin forming other channels of communication with interlocutors in Ukraine. Zelenskiy said Russia was actively trying to do this before he signed the order.

HELP FOR MOLDOVA

Zelenskiy said Ukraine was ready to offer coal to Moldova, which is in the midst of an energy crisis after flows of Russian gas through Ukraine stopped at the beginning of this year.

Most of Moldova is controlled by authorities in Chisinau, but a sizeable minority of the population live in Transdniestria, a region which broke away in a violent conflict in the 1990s, after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

That region, which has Moldova's only power station, is now facing the brunt of an energy crisis after losing gas supply, warning that its supplies will soon be exhausted.

“Russia’s latest move has been to orchestrate an energy crisis," Sandu told reporters in Kyiv, adding that electricity prices had shot up in territories controlled by her government, but that things were even worse in the breakaway area.

"Those living in the Transdniestrian region of Moldova, held hostage by an unconstitutional regime backed by Russia for the past three decades, are now left in cold and darkness.”

Sandu said this was part of a calculated Russian strategy to sow chaos in Moldova and to facilitate the coming to power of a pro-Russian government, an apparent nod to parliamentary elections coming up this year.

Zelenskiy said Ukraine could supply enough coal to Moldova or to Transdniestria to solve their energy problems and to drive electricity prices down by 30%.

"The absence of a crisis in Moldova is also (in the interests of) our Ukrainian security," Zelenskiy said, adding that Ukraine could send a team of specialists to facilitate the use of Ukrainian coal at Transdniestria's power plant.

Sandu said it was up to Transdniestrian authorities in the region's capital of Tiraspol to accept the aid.

Dutch PM raised ASML in talks with China's Ding

Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof held "critical conversations" with visiting Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, he said on Friday, including discussions on human rights and on semiconductor equipment supplier ASML.

The Dutch government has introduced progressively tighter restrictions on exports of ASML's chipmaking tools to China, one of its biggest markets, under pressure from the United States - a policy that Beijing has objected to.

Schoof told reporters his meeting in The Hague this week with Ding had been mostly positive and he had accepted a reciprocal invitation to travel to China later this year.

"China is an extremely important trade partner, particularly for the Netherlands, and that means you have to take that into account in all your meetings," Schoof said.

Separately, Schoof said the Dutch government did not expect a change in policy from U.S. President Donald Trump on semiconductor equipment exports - and that the Netherlands decides its own export policies - but that the two countries remain close allies.

"We have to wait for what the American government comes forward with," Schoof said, adding that his government has had contacts with Trump administration officials "at various levels".

China's foreign ministry on Thursday said Ding had told Dutch dignitaries that China wants to work with the Netherlands to ensure global supply chains run smoothly.

Visualizing NATO's And Russia's Militarization Of The Arctic

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Arctic has been considered a politically neutral zone, marked by the peaceful international cooperation of scientists.

But, as Statista's Anna Fleck reports, as the Arctic ice melts and more land and sea becomes accessible, opportunities for resource extraction and maritime trade routes are opening up, making it increasingly attractive to vying global powers, with some observers questioning confidence in its stability.

Infographic: NATO’s and Russia’s Militarization of the Arctic | Statista

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 is considered a turning point in Arctic relations. At the time the war broke out, Russia had been chairing the Arctic Council, an intergovernmental forum that promotes cooperation and coordination between the Arctic States, Arctic Indigenous Peoples and other Arctic inhabitants, covering a range of issues - crucially, excluding military security.

Seven of the eight Arctic Council members (all but Russia) promptly decided to boycott meetings over the war and only met again in 2023 to oversee the handover of the chairmanship to Norway. Without Russia, which is so large that its northern border makes up 53 percent of the Arctic coastline, the Arctic Council faces criticism over its international legitimacy, as it can no longer claim to be separate from geopolitical conflicts. In 2024, Russia then suspended annual payments to the organization until the council’s full activities involving all members resumed. Some virtual meetings started up again last year with Russian participation.

Russia has a larger military presence in the Arctic than NATO and has been investing in and upgrading its Soviet-era facilities. Chatham House, a UK think tank, says this is defensive in nature and that the Kremlin is opposed to the idea of starting a conflict in the Arctic. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Moscow is rather “pursuing economic ambitions, protecting its second-strike nuclear capabilities and projecting power into the Central Arctic, Bering Sea and North Atlantic”.

The Arctic Institute adds to this, saying that Russia’s control of the North Sea Route (NSR) would give an “economic and diplomatic lever with which to extend their regional influence”, highlighting how the Russian Northern Fleet has increased its surface and underwater monitoring of the route. The U.S. Department of Defense takes a stronger rhetoric, stating in its 2024 Arctic Strategy that Russia’s maritime infrastructure could allow it to enforce “excessive and illegal maritime claims” along the NSR between the Bering Strait and Kara Strait in the future. The document also highlights new logistical challenges in the region due to climate change as well as U.S. concern over the competition of a co-operating Russia and China, the latter of which has also shown interest in being a part of the region's developments, calling itself a “near-Arctic state”.

NATO too has carried out drills and increased its might in the arena, with the addition of Sweden and Finland to the group last year. The U.S. DoD says it is monitoring developments and improving surveillance and early warning systems in the vast region to “ensure the Arctic does not become a strategic blind spot.” Data published by Foreign Policy illustrates how in Europe, Norway has 13 Arctic bases, including a new addition, Camp Viking, a UK training ground for Royal Marines Commandos.

This source shows the U.S. to have nine bases in Alaska in addition to those in Greenland and Iceland. Despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s reiteration of wanting to buy Greenland in the past weeks, Washington has said it has no plans to increase the U.S.' current military footprint there. Observers note that continued tensions and military buildup on both sides has the increased risk of miscalculation.

Trump Battles Globalism in Public Health

 by Betsy McCaughey

Good riddance to the World Health Organization -- more aptly called the Woke Health Oligarchy.

On his first day, President Donald Trump withdrew the U.S. from WHO, a necessary step in putting the health of Americans first. Immediately the left-wing media sounded the alarm, quoting globalist-minded scientists at American universities and think tanks falsely claiming that Trump's move will isolate the U.S. from worldwide efforts to detect and limit deadly diseases.

These claims willfully ignore WHO's disgraceful record. WHO was founded to create an international method of sharing data and fighting disease. But when it faced its biggest test -- the virus emanating from China in the winter of 2019-20 -- it proved to be a puppet of the Chinese Communist Party. WHO pandered to Beijing, colluding to keep the disease a secret and likely increasing the death toll by millions.

As Elise Stefanik, Trump's United Nations ambassador nominee, told Congress Tuesday, "we cannot tolerate entities that are taken over by CCP propaganda."

Roll the tape.

Lie No. 1 -- In December 2019 and January 2020, while Chinese officials were arresting locals for discussing the Wuhan virus and censoring information flowing out of the country, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus heaped praise on the Chinese for their "openness to sharing information" and falsely claimed that "China has bought the world time."

Lie No. 2 -- Ghebreyesus kowtowed to China and delayed declaring COVID-19 an international health emergency until February 2020, after it had spread to 18 countries.

Lie No. 3 -- The WHO promised an investigation into the virus's origins but allowed China to block the WHO investigators from talking to Chinese scientists or disease victims, or even examining patient data. WHO went along with the phony conclusion that a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology was "extremely unlikely."

Despite these lies, the scientific establishment at most U.S. universities and scientists at the federal health agencies like the National Institutes of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a glowing false picture of WHO, claiming the U.S. will be less safe without it.

Many, including WHO's biggest advocate, Anthony Fauci, also back WHO's ongoing push for a global pandemic treaty.

That treaty proposal is a confiscatory piece of mischief that would have forced the U.S. to hand over a whopping 20% of medical supplies to WHO in the event of a global crisis. All for the sake of global equity. WHO -- meaning China -- would decide which countries get the supplies -- and prevent the U.S. from prioritizing Americans' needs.

Typical of the dangerous global thinking dominating academic science, Harvard health expert Jesse Bump says the treaty is designed to correct "the shameful and selfish actions of rich countries in the COVID pandemic."

Exiting WHO is a first step, but the Trump administration also needs to clean house at the federal health agencies, replacing the globalist bias that has caused these agencies to squander billions in other parts of the world while falling short protecting Americans.

You can thank former President Barack Obama and his CDC head Thomas Frieden for launching an America Last philosophy. When Frieden was asked about his top priority, he said it was eradicating polio, though there were only 74 cases in remote parts of the world and none in the U.S.

Obama committed billions to building labs and health infrastructure throughout Africa and Asia, while many health departments in the U.S. were hampered by a lack of these facilities, including disease surveillance systems.

When the mosquito-borne disease Zika struck in 2016, Frieden allocated staff and funding for mosquito control in South America but not to the 26 states in the U.S. threatened by the disease. Frieden insisted mosquito control was a local responsibility here. Tell that to a mother in Florida or Texas who gave birth to a brain-damaged baby.

During Trump's first term, little attention was paid to how globalism diverted health resources to far-off countries that are not even necessarily allies. Then COVID -19 shined a bright light on American public health inadequacies.

Currently the CDC has over 1,600 employees working on the payroll in 60 countries.

David Weldon, Trump's nominee to head the CDC, needs to assure the public that the CDC under his watch will look out for the American people first. Global loyalties be damned.

4 charged in major NYC ketamine drug trafficking bust dubbed ‘Operation Frostbite’

Heaps of ketamine, MDMA and illegal weed were seized by authorities as they busted a drug lab in Queens and arrested the ringleader of the dangerous narcotics operation, prosecutors said Friday.

Xing Li, 40, who allegedly led the major trafficking scheme, was arrested along with three other accused drug peddlers Thursday following a 16-month investigation dubbed “Operation Frostbite,” the Queens District Attorney’s Office said.

The group, allegedly led by Li, of Flushing, sold and stored the dissociative anesthetic ketamine, MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy, and cannabis in various locations across Queens and Manhattan, according to prosecutors.

They were busted through a series of buys from undercover officers totaling $26,000 between June 2023 and April 2024, prosecutors alleged.

Two separate search warrants in July and October also led to the seizure of more than 30 kilograms of ketamine, 600 grams of MDMA, and over 100 pounds of cannabis, according to the DA’s office.

The four suspects — including Quan Ni, 24, and Raymond Nam, 36, of Flushing, and Kaiyu Huang, 36, of Manhattan — were indicted on a slew of charges, including conspiracy, criminal sale and possession of controlled substances and criminal possession of cannabis.

Li, the accused ringleader of the operation, faces an additional charge of operating as a major trafficker, according to court records.

“Those who choose to peddle poison in Queens are on notice: my office will meticulously dismantle drug rings and take drugs off the streets,” DA Melinda Katz said in a statement.

Katz praised the NYPD and investigators in her office’s Major Economic Crime Bureau for their role in the bust.

“I thank members of my Major Economic Crimes Bureau and the NYPD for their work in bringing these individuals to justice. I also extend my deepest gratitude to the undercover officers who risked their safety to gather critical evidence in this case,” DA Katz said.

If convicted, Li faces a maximum prison term of 15 years to life.

The other three accused face three to 10 years in prison, if convicted.

The accused drug peddlers are due back in Queens Supreme Criminal Court on February 7.
