Hims & Hers sees 650% traffic spike post Super Bowl ad as clash on compounded GLP-1s heats up

Hims & Hers hit the bullseye with its Super Bowl ad—it sparked a lot of attention from consumers.

The ad, called "Sick of the System," aired in the third quarter of Sunday's Super Bowl LIX game, the most-watched Super Bowl ever with 127.7 million viewers, according to FOX Sports. The ad featured a montage of junk food, abdominal fat, statistics about the health risks of obesity and big pharma's high prices. The ad then promotes Hims & Hers' weight loss products, including compounded GLP-1 medications, as an alternative to pricey branded GLP-1s such as Ozempic and Wegovy.

"Junk food giants, diet industry’s quick fixes, Big Pharma’s price-gouging, and regulations that favor special interests have created a system that leaves us with limited options, skyrocketing costs, and a cycle of failure," Hims & Hers said on a site that promotes the ad.

"The Super Bowl ad did a great job of driving awareness about the Hims & Hers platform, our commitment to making healthcare more accessible and the options individuals have for weight management solutions," a Hims & Hers spokesperson said in a statement to Fierce Healthcare.

The company saw an "unprecedented" surge in engagement, with traffic spiking over 650% in the hours post-airing, according to Hims & Hers data that the company shared with Fierce Healthcare.

New-customer registrations and platform activity hit record highs, "reflecting widespread consumer interest and demand," the spokesperson said. Case in point, the Hers app jumped to #2 in the Health & Wellness category on the Apple Store. The app was not in the top 10 prior the game, the spokesperson noted.

Also, according to data from EDO Inc., a platform that measures predictive behaviors driven by TV advertising, Hims & Hers' Super Bowl ad ranked #5 in engagement among all ads aired during the game.

Investors also liked what they saw as shares of Hims & Hers gained 10% this week and shares are up 83% so far this year.

But the controversial ad also garnered backlash from some viewers and caught the attention of the pharma industry, lawmakers, medical experts and patient advocacy groups, who lashed the company for "deceptive" advertising and for perpetuating a stigma on obesity.

Hims & Hers is a multispecialty telehealth platform that connects consumers to medical care for numerous conditions related to mental health, sexual health, dermatology and primary care. The company expanded into weight loss in late 2023 with oral medication kits and added compounded GLP-1 medications to its offerings last May. Hims & Hers also offers subscriptions for Wegovy and Ozempic, starting around $1,800 a month, while compounded GLP-1 medications are priced at $165 a month for a subscription.

Compounded semaglutide injections have the same active ingredient as the buzzy branded weight loss drugs but are not required to go through the Food and Drug Administration's rigorous approval process.

In June 2023, the FDA issued a warning that unapproved versions of GLP-1 drugs "can be risky for patients, as unapproved versions do not undergo FDA’s review for safety, effectiveness and quality before they are marketed."

The GLP-1 drug market has been dominated by pharmaceutical giant Novo Nordisk. Demand for these drugs have soared in the past few years, sparking periodic shortages. The medications also are gaining expanded approval from regulators and increased health coverage.

Novo Nordisk Check Before You Inject ad
The company ran the ad in The New York Times and USA Today (Novo Nordisk)

When a drug is in shortage, compounders may be able to prepare a compounded version of that drug if they meet certain requirements of the Food and Drug Administration, the FDA said in a January release. The FDA said patients should not use a compounded GLP-1 drug if an approved drug, like Wegovy, is available.

Novo Nordisk, for its part, hit back almost immediately, placing an ad in The New York Times and USA Today on Monday called "Check Before You Inject."

A company spokesperson said the ad was a "direct response" the Hims & Hers Super Bowl commercial. The ad features a vial that reads "compounded semaglutide" and a syringe. "Some compounded semaglutide vials have been found to contain dangerous impurities, banned substances, or incorrect doses. Bottom line: If the label doesn’t say Wegovy (semaglutide) or Ozempic (semaglutide), it’s not FDA approved and you have no idea what’s inside," the ad reads.

"With this Check Before You Inject ad, Novo Nordisk is warning consumers about the significant dangers of reaching for illegitimate compounded 'semaglutide' drugs, which have been shown to contain impurities and ingredients dangerous to patients. The recent explosion in irresponsible and misleading advertising about compounded GLP-1 drugs, like the Hims & Hers Super Bowl commercial, puts patients’ safety at risk and we cannot stay silent," the company said in a statement to Fierce Healthcare.

In response to the Novo Nordisk ad, a Hims & Hers spokesperson said, "We take safety, quality, and transparency steps for every customer on our platform. That includes making Certificates of Analysis – a report card on quality standards for USP benchmarks – available to every GLP-1 customer, so they know the exact ingredients from FDA-regulated suppliers that are in the medications they receive."

The ad sparked controversy before it even aired on Sunday as it was available on YouTube in late January.

On Feb. 7, The Obesity Society said in a statement that the Super Bowl advertisement "will mislead viewers by excluding any information about the overall risks and side effects of compounded drugs. The ad emphasizes the role of the food and health system in the obesity epidemic and fails to include any specific information about the potential risks and side effects of Hims’ drugs being marketed to consumers."

The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA), a trade group representing pharma companies, said the ad runs afoul of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), which requires that advertising for prescription drugs—including compounded drugs–not be false or misleading.

"It also resurfaces serious concerns about the lack of oversight of the compounding industry, specifically that these products don’t undergo the same extensive FDA review for safety and effectiveness. At the same time, the way these products are advertised and marketed violates the stringent requirements imposed on advertising for all products," PhRMA said in a statement.

Hims & Hers, through a spokesperson, said the company complies with existing laws and noted that compounding is explicitly permitted by the FDA and has been done safely with a high level of oversight from the FDA for decades.

The company also said it explicitly discloses that compounded medications are not FDA-approved or evaluated for safety, efficacy, or quality, ensuring transparency in its messaging.

In the Super Bowl ad, the disclaimer that its compounded medications aren't FDA approved was displayed briefly and in a very small font.

The ad also garnered attention on Capitol Hill.

On Friday, U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) and U.S.Senator Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-KS) sent a bipartisan letter to the FDA flagging Hims & Hers' ad and accusing the company of misleading patients "by omitting any safety or side effect information when promoting a specific type of weight loss medication."

Under federal law and regulations, FDA requires that prescription drug advertisements be truthful, not misleading, and balanced—failure to do so risks FDA enforcement action, including civil monetary penalties, Durbin and Marshall said in the letter.

The lawmakers said they "recognize the important roles that pharmaceutical compounding and telehealth play in the health care delivery system, helping to ensure access to FDA-approved products and filling a need for more customized treatments."

But, they contend that the advertisement appears to be exploiting a perceived loophole in federal law regarding promotions of compounded drugs by telehealth companies, according to a statement from the lawmakers.

Durbin and Marshall said they plan to introduce legislation to close any gaps in regarding prescription drug advertising.

"We agree with the Senators Durbin and Marshall on the value of compounding and telehealth when it comes to expanding much-needed access to personalized care. We are complying with existing law and are happy to continue working with Congress and the new Administration to fix the broken health system and ensure that patients have choices for quality, safe, and affordable healthcare," the Hims & Hers spokesperson said in a statement to Fierce Healthcare.

But the current political environment might be in Hims & Hers' favor. The ad notes that the company's compounded drugs are made in America, which might hit the right tone with the Trump administration. And Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has championed a Make America Healthy Again platform and also has been critical of the pharma industry, is poised to become the next HHS Secretary.

Hims & Hers’ Chief Commercial Officer Mike Chi told The Wall Street Journal that the goal of the ad was “not only to talk to customers but to raise the issue among regulators, legislators, and those who can drive change.”

The Alliance of Pharmacy Compounders (APC) put out a statement in support of Hims & Hers' ad, noting that unlike FDA-approved drugs, which must comply with strict labeling requirements under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, compounded medications have different rules for marketing and advertising. Compounded drug advertisements fall under FTC jurisdiction, not the FDA's typical prescription drug advertising rules, the organization said.

"Hims’ Super Bowl ad does not promote a specific drug or medication and therefore is not required to provide information about side effects or risks," APC said. "While the focus of Hims’ Super Bowl ad on drug pricing may push the envelope in terms of the role of compounded drugs in our healthcare system – a debate worth having – it’s also perfectly consistent with laws and regulations that allow companies to promote healthcare services without promoting specific drug or needing to make certain disclosures about certain drugs," APC said.

The clash over compounded GLP-1 medications comes as a new surey of primary care physicians finds that doctors are increasingly concerned about the risks of patient using third-party telehealth prescribers of GLP-1s for weight loss.

Two-thirds of PCPs (67%) said accessing GLP-1 prescriptions for weight loss through a third-party telehealth provider may put their patient’s health at risk, according to a survey of 2,000 primary care physician on Sermo. The survey findings were released by Omada Health, a digital health company that targets chronic disease management.

Producer Prices Surge At Fastest Pace In 2 Years As Energy 'Deflation' Ends

Following yesterday's hotter than expected surge in consumer prices, all eyes are on producer prices this morning as headline PPI rose 0.4% MoM (more than the 0.3% exp) in January, but December's 0.2% MoM rise was revised dramatically higher (to +0.5% MoM). Between the hot headline and upward revisions, headline PPI rose 3.5% YoY (+3.3% exp) - the hottest PPI since Feb 2023...

Source: Bloomberg

That is the 13th straight month without a MoM decline in producer prices.

2024's PPI data has been serially revised higher with December's the biggest upward revision since Dec 2021...

Source: Bloomberg

Core PPI also rose more than expected (+0.3% vs +0.2% exp) which dragged prices (ex food and energy) up 3.6% YoY...

Under the hood, Goods costs rose at double the pace of Services....

PPI Highlights:

  • Leading the broad-based January advance in the index for final demand, prices for final demand services rose 0.3 percent. The index for final demand goods moved up 0.6 percent.

  • The index for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services rose 0.3 percent in January after moving up 0.4 percent in December.

  • For the 12 months ended in January, prices for final demand less foods, energy, and trade services advanced 3.4 percent

PPI Services Details:

  • The index for final demand services moved up 0.3 percent in January, the sixth consecutive increase. Three-fourths of the broad-based advance in January is attributable to prices for final demand services less trade, transportation, and warehousing, which rose 0.4 percent.

  • The indexes for final demand transportation and warehousing services and for final demand trade services also increased, 0.6 percent and 0.1 percent, respectively.

    • Over one-third of the January rise in the index for final demand services can be traced to prices for traveler accommodation services, which advanced 5.7 percent.

    • The indexes for automobile retailing (partial); truck transportation of freight; food and alcohol retailing; apparel, jewelry, footwear, and accessories retailing; and bundled wired telecommunications access services also moved higher.

    • In contrast, margins for fuels and lubricants retailing fell 9.8 percent. Prices for securities brokerage, dealing, investment advice, and related services and for physician care also declined.

PPI Goods Details:

Kremlin Confirms Putin-Trump Summit On The Way, As Zelensky Warns Against Cutting Ukrainians Out

The Kremlin side has confirmed that a Putin-Trump summit is on the way, following yesterday's phone call, revealed to have been an hour-and-a-half in length. Crucially the two leaders agreed to begin negotiating an end to the war in Ukraine.

A Thursday report in Russia's state RT strikes a glowing and enthusiastic tone: "It is hard to overestimate the significance of the recent phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said."

Prior Helsinki summit, via Anadolu Agency

Peskov had further said following the "very important conversation" Wednesday that each side is now organizing the groundwork for a summit. It further involved the presidents extending invitations to visit each other's countries.

"They will focus on a separate meeting; they also agreed that instructions would be immediately given to the relevant assistants so that they would begin the relevant work," Peskov said.

A handful of mainstream media pundits online had a fit over imagining Putin arriving on US soil for an official state visit, given they see him as global enemy number one. This dramatic shift, or possibly bringing Putin in from the diplomatic cold, comes after three years of Moscow and Washington relations reaching a low-point in modern history. There have been no contacts at the highest levels since the Ukraine war began.

"We are much more impressed by the position of the current administration, and we are open to dialogue," Peskov had emphasized. "There is political will… to conduct a dialogue to reach a settlement… We need to wait for... at least the first results of the joint work," he also cautioned.

Interestingly Putin's spokesman took a swipe at the prior US administration during the post-call presser:

Unlike the administration of ex-US President Joe Biden, which believed that "everything must be done to ensure that the war continues," the Trump team apparently "holds the view that everything must be done to stop the war and for peace to prevail," Peskov said.

President Trump had immediately after the 90-minute call written on Truth Social, "Millions of people have died in a War that would not have happened if I were President, but it did happen, so it must end. No more lives should be lost!"

As for his call with Ukraine's Zelensky, which took place after Putin, Trump wrote: "The conversation went very well. He, like President Putin, wants to make PEACE."

Zelensky in follow-up on Thursday articulated that he doesn't think Trump calling Putin before him is a sign of US priorities, but admitted it is "unpleasant". He also emphasized that European allies should be at any future negotiating table, and that Ukraine's direct participation in talks concerning the country's fate is paramount.

Unpleasant... not nice:

Negotiators "cannot accept any agreements without us," Zelensky has said. The Germans and French have come out insistent on this as well. Zelensky laid out that Ukraine will not accept any agreements made between Russia and the US without his involvement.

Zelensky described that he did not discuss the question of future NATO membership with Trump, something which the White House has taken off the table as an option, but said he knows the Trump admin does not want Ukraine as a member. Further, Trump didn't raise the question of Ukraine elections during the phone call, Zelensky said.

Yesterday in a Guardian interview, Zelensky set forth the following:

If Donald Trump withdraws US support for Ukraine, Europe alone will be unable to fill the gap, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has suggested. 'There are voices which say that Europe could offer security guarantees without the Americans, and I always say no,' said the Ukrainian president during an hour-long interview with the Guardian at the presidential administration in Kyiv. 'Security guarantees without America are not real security guarantees,' he added.

Trump has said he wants to end the war in Ukraine, but sceptics fear a US-brokered deal could involve forcing Ukraine to capitulate to Vladimir Putin’s maximalist demands. Zelenskyy said he was ready to negotiate but wanted Ukraine to do so from a 'position of strength', adding that he would offer US companies lucrative reconstruction contracts and investment concessions to try to get Trump onside.

Lavrov gloats...

Zelensky is at least realistic on the above, particularly about 'no real security guarantees without the Americans.' As for getting Trump onboard with Kiev's point of view in negotiations, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent met with Zelensky in Kiev on Wednesday, where they reportedly agreed to a draft proposal for granting US access to the country's rare earth minerals.

"We had a productive, constructive conversation. For me, the issue of security guarantees for Ukraine is very important, and we talked about minerals in general," Zelensky said of the meeting.

European Leaders Freaking Out Over Trump-Putin Summit: 'Dirty Deal' For Ukraine

European leaders are freaking out at the speed at which Presidents Trump and Putin are headed toward a summit to talk Ukraine peace, following their 90-minute Wednesday phone call, the first known contact between the two since Trump took office.

Zelensky too is loudly demanding that nothing be agreed to without Ukraine's direct representation and input. He has also asserted that in any negotiations to end the war, Kiev's European allies must be at the table. Reuters has characterized a "scramble" to get a seat. Defense Secretary Hegseth's Ukraine bombshell of ruling out future NATO membership in statements yesterday have also left the Europeans reeling.

There's also Trump's blunt Monday words to Fox wherein he said of Ukraine, "They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday." The hits keep coming and without doubt European officials are on anxiously on edge over what Trump might say next.

German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius at the meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels, via US Navy stillframe

"European leaders warned the United States on Thursday against sealing a Ukraine peace deal with Russia behind their backs as they scrambled for a seat at the table after Donald Trump spoke to Vladimir Putin and announced the start of negotiations," the fresh Reuters report indicates.

One would think that simply ending the killing would be prime and paramount, instead of shouting accusations of Trump supposedly going behind the Europeans' backs. Instead, we get statements like this: "It is clear that any deal behind our backs will not work. Any agreement will need also Ukraine and Europe being part of it," European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said.

"Why are we giving them (Russia) everything that they want even before the negotiations have been started?" Kallas posed amid a meeting NATO defense ministers with Ukrainian offials in Brussels. "It's appeasement. It has never worked."

"Any quick fix is a dirty deal," said Kallas. And France too is warning against "peace through weakness". Lithuania's military too has said Europe must not "under the illusion that Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin are going to find the solution for all of us," according to Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene.

A fresh FT report also sounds the alarm, with the Europeans worried over what Trump will extract from them:

More than half a dozen senior European officials told the Financial Times they expected the US president to tell them they must pay for Ukrainian reconstruction and deploy troops there to maintain a peace deal in which they would not be involved.

“The Americans don’t see a role for Europe in the big geopolitical questions related to the war. It’s going to be a real test of unity,” said one senior EU official. "Trump sees us as money. And frankly we haven’t been clear on what our seat at the table would look like in exchange for that money."

A Wednesday night statement produced by Germany, France, the UK and other European allies said, "We want to discuss the way forward with our American allies . . . Ukraine and Europe must be involved in any negotiations."

They are also angry that Washington already gave Moscow a major concession before peace talks even begin: taking NATO membership off the table. However, it's long been clear to all that this is a non-starter for Putin, and chief cause of the war, so White House strategy appears that it had to 'go big' just to ensure that talks could get started fast.

'American troops will die' - Zelensky fearmongers, suggesting Russia will invade Europe next...

"It is unfortunate... that Trump has already made public concessions to Putin before negotiations have even begun," Germany’s defense minister Boris Pistorius said Thursday.

"It would have been better to talk about Ukraine’s possible Nato membership first at the negotiating table," he said from Brussels. "Putin is constantly provoking the west and attacking us again. It would be naive to believe the threat would actually diminish after such a peace agreement."

Meanwhile the Munich Security Conference kicks off Friday, which will include the attendance of US vice-president JD Vance and the president’s Ukraine envoy, Keith Kellogg. The Ukrainians and European allies are hoping to get more immediate clarity from Vance on the way forward.

Musk: "We Need To Delete Entire Agencies"; Total Fed Worker Buyout Tops 75,000

Early Thursday, Elon Musk joined Dubai's annual World Governments Summit via video link to provide an update on his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) efforts within the US government, aimed at rooting out corruption and dismantling federal agencies, reducing the federal workforce, and eliminating the shadow government operated in a complex web of NGOs.

"We need to delete entire agencies. We need to remove the roots of the weed. That's not to say there won't be an increase in future bureaucracy from another administration but it will be from a lower baseline. Nothing is forever but we can strengthen the foundation," Musk told the crowd.

President Trump appointed Musk as a "special government employee" to lead DOGE and has waged war against the federal bureaucracy.

The latest data from Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the voluntary resignation program for the federal workforce, indicates that 75,000 workers across various federal agencies have opted to leave. This number only makes up about 3% of the 2.4 million civilian federal workforce, far short of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's target of 5% to 10%. This came after a federal judge in Boston lifted his order freezing the buyout program overnight.

"The federal workforce grew 6.3% under former President Joe Biden, fueled by pandemic spending programs. A 3% cut to the federal workforce would only bring the number down to 2023 levels," Bloomberg pointed out.

Source: Bloomberg

Even with the targeted buyouts missing the White House's estimates, an op-ed by the Wall Street Journal's deputy op-ed editor, Matthew Hennessey, noted:

"Even Ronald Reagan, the great apostle of smaller government, couldn't achieve in eight years what Mr. Musk has done in 3½ weeks. The billionaire businessman is less apostle than avenging angel. The Department of Government Efficiency is the change we've been waiting for."

On Tuesday, Trump signed an executive order to eliminate what he described as "waste and bloat" in the government while "promptly undertaking  preparations to initiate large-scale reductions in force." He called it a "critical transformation" of Washington, DC, and framed the move as a necessary step forward for the nation.

Early Thursday, we noted internet search trends across the DC metro area, including Maryland and northern Virginia counties, indicating growing panic among federal workers in the so-called DC swamp. Searches for "Criminal Defense Lawyer" and "RICO Laws" have erupted in recent weeks.

Draining the swamp is long overdue

Yet Democrats are calling for war against Musk and Trump over DOGE's efforts for a more transparent and efficient government.

Some far-left Democrats, like Rep. Robert Garcia, called for supporters to begin arming up.

RFK Jr. Confirmed To Lead HHS Despite McConnell Siding With Dems

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was confirmed as the Director of Health and Human Services on Thursday, despite Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-INO) as the sole Republican to vote against him.

The vote - which is ongoing, came after a heated battle in the Republican-controlled Senate, which voted 53-47 on Wednesday to invoke cloture, setting up the final confirmation showdown. Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic and former environmental activist, only needs a simple majority of 51 votes to secure the position.

Kennedy’s nomination has been a political firestorm from the start. His past claims linking vaccines to autism and other harms sparked a fierce backlash from Democrats, who grilled him in contentious confirmation hearings last month. But despite their objections, Kennedy managed to navigate the political minefield, thanks in part to key Republican senators who were initially hesitant but ultimately threw their support behind him.

A GOP Divide Over RFK Jr.

With Democrats on the Senate Finance Committee refusing to advance Kennedy’s nomination, pressure fell on Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP). Cassidy, a physician himself, had expressed concerns about Kennedy’s anti-vaccine rhetoric but ultimately gave him the green light, citing a long list of commitments Kennedy made to ensure transparency and oversight.

“These commitments, and my expectation that we can have a great working relationship to make America healthy again, is the basis of my support,” Cassidy said.

Kennedy also won over GOP Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) and Sen. Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), both of whom had initially been skeptical. Murkowski admitted she remained wary of Kennedy’s stance on vaccines but pointed to his pledges to work with Congress and make data-driven policy decisions.

One of the biggest question marks was Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), a staunch proponent of vaccines who contracted polio as a child. While McConnell voted to advance Kennedy’s nomination, all eyes were on whether he will break ranks with his party during the final confirmation vote.

Beyond vaccines, Kennedy has vowed to shake up HHS by tackling Big Pharma and the food industry, shifting the agency’s focus to chronic disease prevention and diet reform. His ‘Make America Healthy Again’ plan includes overhauling dietary guidelines, cracking down on ultra-processed foods, and addressing the root causes of the nation’s health crises.

“Our country is not going to be destroyed because we get the marginal tax rate wrong. It is going to be destroyed if we get this issue wrong,” Kennedy declared, warning of the dangers of chronic diseases.

From Political Outsider to Trump’s HHS Pick

Kennedy’s political arc has been quite interesting, to say the least. A lifelong Democrat, he frequently invoked his family’s legacy - his father, former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, and his uncle, former President John F. Kennedy. But in recent years, he’s built strong alliances with right-wing figures, particularly over his vocal opposition to vaccine mandates.

Kennedy made headlines last August when he abruptly dropped his independent presidential bid and endorsed Trump, a move that shocked many in the Democratic establishment. After months of criticizing Kennedy, Trump embraced him, calling him “a man who has been an incredible champion for so many of these values that we all share.”

Trump wasted no time in rewarding Kennedy’s loyalty, nominating him for one of the most powerful roles in the federal government.

Kennedy’s confirmation comes just one day after another lightning-rod nominee, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, was confirmed as director of national intelligence in a 52-48 vote. If Thursday’s vote goes as expected, RFK Jr. will soon take the reins at HHS.

Houthis Vow To Unleash Hell On Red Sea Shipping Again As Gaza Truce Teeters

Yemen's Houthis have declared "our hands are on the trigger" ready to resume attacks on Israel and especially Red Sea shipping of the Gaza ceasefire falters.

"Our hands are on the trigger, and we are ready to immediately escalate against the Israeli enemy if it returns to escalation in the Gaza Strip," said leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi on Tuesday.

The ceasefire is indeed teetering, given Netanyahu's security cabinet has backed Trump's ultimatum demanding the return of all remaining Israeli hostages in Hamas captivity or else "let hell break out" and the Israeli military onslaught on Gaza would continue. He gave a noon Saturday deadline.

AFP/Getty Images

The ceasefire agreement is still within the first of three phases, and Hamas and Israel have been trading accusations of the other having broken the deal.

The Houthis have since November of 2023 launched over 100 attacks on commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea, some of which may have struck American warships, though the Pentagon has kept mum on the extent of any potential damage. Several MQ-9 Reaper drones have also been shot down in that time period.

PM Netanyahu following a four-hour security cabinet meeting said he's ordered troop reinforcements in and around Gaza, and that the country is ready to "return to intense fighting until Hamas is finally defeated" if the Islamist group doesn't hand over the remaining hostages.

Oil Price has observed this week that traffic has somewhat stabilized since the truce went into effect: "vessel transits through the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait have remained relatively stable at subdued levels since the Iran-backed Houthis said they would limit attacks on commercial vessels," it described.

However, given the tense situation and ratcheting rhetoric, "shippers and tanker owners are not in a rush to return to the Red Sea/Suez Canal route despite the partial Houthi ceasefire," the report said.

The Houthis had pledged to halt the attacks, with the exception of Israeli-owned ships, and this vow has held. Prior to that, drone and missile attacks had come weekly or almost daily. There were also several ballistic missile attacks on Israel, including the Tel Aviv area, over the past months.

The latest weekly assessment by the Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) said the monitoring group has seen "no significant changes in traffic volume as the transit numbers remain fairly consistent."

"Though inactivity could be considered as an improvement in maritime security, JMIC assesses the threat to merchant vessels has not changed and recommends industry remain vigilant," it added.
