Trump admin threatens to pull billions in fed funds unless MTA yields NYC subway crime data

Get on board with subway safety or hop off the gravy train.

President Trump’s transportation chief demanded the MTA fork over data on plants to tackle subway crime and safety — or else risk losing federal funding, a letter obtained by The Post shows.

The nation’s largest transit agency needs to show it’s properly using federal tax dollars to ensure a crime-free commute, said US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

“The trend of violent crime, homelessness, and other threats to public safety on one of our nation’s most prominent metro systems is unacceptable,” he said in a statement. “After years of soft-on-crime policies, our Department is stepping in to restore order.”

The oversight letter that Duffy sent Tuesday to Metropolitan Transportation Authority honcho Janno Lieber gives the agency until March 31 to provide a swath of information on assaults on straphangers, subway surfing and fare evasion.

Duffy argued that a number of high-profile incidents on the New York City transit system raised concerns over whether the MTA had used federal funds to actually ensure the safety of passengers and workers.

“The expectation is that (New York City Transit Authority) will address this matter promptly to ensure compliance and avoid further (Federal Transit Administration) enforcement actions up to and including redirecting or withholding funding,” the letter warns.

How much federal money that could be redirected or withheld from the MTA was unclear.

MTA officials anticipate needing upwards of $14 billion from the federal government over the next five years to carry out an ambitious capital plan.

The amount could change, however, as Congress decides every five years what that funding amount should be — and it’s up again in 2026.

The letter largely demands information, such as crimes in the subway system and fare evasion, that is already publicly available.

It also seeks information about funds from “all sources” that are budgeted toward improving straphanger and MTA worker safety.

“Of key importance will be documentation of actions and funding that ensure effective security for passengers and workers on the NYCT system,” the letter states.

Transit crime has been a persistent concern in New York City since the COVID-19 pandemic — and especially recently in light of a spate of sickening attacks, including a horrific arson in which a woman was burned to death on a Coney Island train.

The fears over subway safety prompted Mayor Eric Adams and Gov. Kathy Hochul to take high-profile stems to not only combat crime, but battle the perception that the transit system is growing unsafe.

Hochul sent National Guard troops into the subways and most recently unveiled a plan to put NYPD cops on every overnight train.

The efforts show some signs of success — transit crime overall is down nearly 27% this year compared to the same span in 2024, NYPD data shows.

A horrific arson attack in December crystallized straphangers’ fears about subway safety.

Felony assaults, however, so far this year remain a whopping 56% higher compared to 2019’s levels, data shows.

“People traveling on the NYCT system to reach their jobs, education, health care, and other critical services need to feel secure and travel in a safe environment free of crime; as well, workers who operate the system need to be sure of a safe operating environment to provide transportation service,” Duffy’s letter states. “The transit riders and workers of New York City deserve nothing less.”

The letter comes just days after Hochul met with Trump at the White House amid weeks of high-stakes bickering between the pair over congestion pricing.

The spat erupted after Duffy sent another letter in February announcing he’ll pull federal approval of the controversial Manhattan toll program, prompting a lawsuit from the MTA.

Transportation department officials later gave the MTA until March 21 to stop congestion pricing, but Hochul and MTA honcho Janno Lieber vowed to keep collecting tolls so long as the court case remained open.

Hochul has alternated between lambasting Trump and playing nice with the president in a spate of meet-ups, during which they’ve jawboned over congestion pricing and redeveloping Penn Station.

The MTA is happy to discuss its efforts, along with the NYPD’s, to tackle crime and fare evasion, said John J. McCarthy, the agency’s chief of policy and external relations.

“The good news is numbers are moving in the right direction: crime is down 40% compared to the same period in 2020 right before the pandemic, and so far in 2025 there are fewer daily major crimes in transit than any non-pandemic year ever,” he said.

“Moreover, in the second half of last year subway fare evasion was down 25% after increasing dramatically during COVID.”

US, allies pledge collective action on hostage-taking

Representatives from the United States and six allied nations pledged to work together to counter global hostage-taking and detentions considered unjust, they said in a joint statement on Tuesday after talks in Montana.

"We are united in our demand for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages," the statement said.

U.S. special envoy Adam Boehler led the talks on Monday and Tuesday in Big Sky, Montana, with counterparts from Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel and the United Kingdom.

They discussed sharing information about detainees and other collaborative efforts to free their citizens held around the world.

"We will spare no effort, in accordance with international law, to bring home hostages and unjustly or arbitrarily detained individuals and to deter such future acts," the statement said, without providing specifics.

Boehler, who was involved in efforts that led to the freedom of American school teacher Marc Fogel from Russia last month, said in a statement that the gathering was centered on "how to support individual freedom and stop the hostage takers who try to take it away."

The group vowed to work collectively to "identify and deploy every diplomatic, economic, and strategic tool at our disposal to bring these individuals home while deterring future such acts," a U.S. State Department official said.

A report last August by the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation said at least 43 U.S. nationals were being held hostage or wrongfully detained in 16 countries across the world.

In addition to these people, U.S. officials are working to gain the release of many others considered unjustly detained around the world, including in China, Russia, Venezuela, Afghanistan and elsewhere.

The State Department official said President Donald Trump has made it a priority to bring Americans home.

"Anyone engaging in these practices is on notice that the United States is prioritizing getting our people back. At the same time, we are pursuing collective measures with our partners that can be brought to bear," the official said.

Everything Nvidia announced at its annual developer conference GTC

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, on Tuesday, unveiled the company's next-generation line of chips at its annual software developer conference, aiming to reassure investors of its dominance in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence industry.

Here are all the products announced on stage:

BLACKWELL ULTRA

Nvidia said its next graphics processing unit (GPU), called Blackwell Ultra, will be available in the second half of this year. The new GPU features larger memory than its current generation, enabling it to support larger AI models.

VERA RUBIN

The latest Rubin chips and servers are set to offer improved speeds compared to their predecessors, especially in data transfers between chips, a key factor for the efficient operation of expansive AI systems that require multiple chips.

Paired with Nvidia's custom-designed processor, Vera, the new Vera Rubin computing system is expected to outperform the company's Blackwell architecture.

Vera Rubin will be released in the second half of 2026, followed by the launch of Vera Rubin Ultra in 2027.

FEYNMAN

The Vera Rubin system will be succeeded by the Feynman architecture, scheduled for release in 2028.

DGX PERSONAL AI COMPUTERS

Nvidia announced its new DGX AI computers, powered by its Blackwell Ultra chips, designed to assist developers in inferencing large models on desktops. The computers will be made by companies including Dell, Lenovo and HP. The device, which follows a smaller desktop machine introduced earlier this year, is seen as a direct challenge to some of Apple's top-end Macs.

SPECTRUM-X AND QUANTUM-X NETWORKING CHIPS

Nvidia's new silicon photonics networking chips will enable AI factories to connect millions of GPUs across various sites, while drastically reducing energy consumption.

The Quantum-X Photonics chips are expected to be available later this year, followed by the launch of Spectrum-X chips in 2026.

DYNAMO SOFTWARE

The software, which Nvidia released for free, is intended to speed up the process of reasoning, in which AI models think through an answer to a question in multiple steps, rather than giving a one-shot answer.

NVIDIA ISAAC GR00T N1

GR00T N1 is a foundational model for humanoid robots, equipped with a dual system for both fast and slow thinking - much like reasoning models.

The framework for GR00T N1 includes Newton, an open-source physics engine developed along with Google DeepMind and Disney Research, and built for creating robots.

Splashdown! SpaceX Safely Brings Stranded Astronauts Home

Update (1820ET): The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying the four crew-9 astronauts safely splashed down in the waters off the coast of Tallahassee, Florida.

The Dragon Capsule's parachutes automatically deployed at around 6,500 feet, bringing it from roughly 119 MPH to 16 MPH, according to SpaceX's Kate Tice.

"There’s just breathtaking views of a calm, glass-like ocean," said NASA's Sandra Jones just before touchdown.

SpaceX-operated rescue ships sped towards the capsule. Upon arrival, a rig onboard one of the vessels will haul the spacecraft out of the water into what's known as the "Dragon's nest."

We can't wait for all the 'Hitler saves astronauts' articles from regime media.

NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are finally returning home after what was supposed to be a week-long mission in a Boeing Starliner spacecraft left them stranded on the International Space Station for nine months. The toxic political environment further prolonged their extended stay under the Biden-Harris regime.

NASA astronauts Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov also joined Williams and Wilmore aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft that undocked from the ISS early Tuesday morning.

"NASA's Crew-9 return coverage will resume at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday on NASA+ until Dragon splashes down at approximately 5:57 p.m. off the coast of Florida, and crew members are safely recovered," the space agency wrote in a statement.

Days ago, Williams and Wilmore thanked Elon Musk for deploying a Dragon capsule to rescue them after their Boeing Starliner spacecraft malfunctioned last summer.

Due to Musk's DOGE efforts, the rescue mission has been widely ignored by the leftist conspiracy networks on corporate television.
