Take Prescription Drug Ads off the Air Already

 by Roger Simon

My father was a doctor and when I was a kid in the 1950s I recall asking him why he didn’t advertise. Medicine was his business, wasn’t it? Normally responsive to my questions, he was taken aback, wondering how I would even countenance such a thing. The honorable medical profession was above that. They weren’t a bag of potato chips or the latest Chevrolet.

I think he said something about Hippocrates, but maybe I’m making that part up. He did at other times.

I don’t remember him advertising or anyone he was associated with doing so. And I don’t remember pharmaceutical ads for prescription drugs on radio and TV either, for the latest antibiotic or anything else. The exception was for over-the-counter drugs, usually analgesics in some form or cough medicine. “Alka Seltzer, Speedy Alka-Seltzer” is forever implanted in my brain.

That was then, as they say, and this is now. We have all sorts of advertisements for medical installations big and small competing for our attention (and money), but even worse we have virtually non-stop advertising for prescription drugs on television. Indeed they seem to dominate the medium appearing on cable and network alike to the degree that sometimes you wonder if there is anything else. I imagine my father would be appalled.

Seemingly most common of these ads are the semaglutide weight loss drugs (Ozempic, etc.) that feature chubby women dancing about gleefully among various food displays, supermarket and open air, in praise of the wonders of the drug until the narrator begins the required recitation of side effects at a speed approaching Mach 20. At that moment the visual explodes into a latter-day Busby Berkeley routine, triumphant music swelling, to distract viewers from the narration lest they might catch that the drug could inspire suicidal ideation or give you any of several dreaded, possibly terminal, diseases.

The audience for these extravaganzas are reassured that all will be well for life, they will find love, they can go to the beach this summer, as long as they take their injection.

This preys especially on young women promising them papa Big Pharma will remedy whatever bad habits they have developed since childhood throughout their lives. Thereby those same habits are as likely to be encouraged as much as mitigated. We see the results in our world-leading obesity rates. Of course that’s not the only cause, but it’s one of them.

Spookier and now apparently growing are adverts for drugs to cure mental disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar (Fanapt, etc.). They began as live action ads with twenty-somethings strolling in the park while a voice over explains their seemingly paranoid thoughts are not really abnormal but are what everybody has, and can be made to fade into the ether by the use of the drug. You will be able to walk off, happily ever after, with the significant other of your choice.

These ads have proliferated and are now in cartoon form, perhaps to reach a younger audience. Meanwhile, the drugs themselves are controversial and do not always work. Some think they should not be taken at all or are less effective than a walk around the block. These are questions that should not, to say the least, be resolved in fifty seconds of manipulative television. It’s hard enough in a medical office where the doctor is forever tinkering with dosages to find a solution to often intractable emotional problems.

The United States and New Zealand are the only countries where prescription drug ads are legal on television. Some would argue that this shows us standing up for freedom of speech, but I would submit there is something here eerily equivalent to that famous limitation on speech — “yelling fire in a crowded theatre.”

That theatre is of course our country where drug use of all sorts, legal and otherwise, proliferates. On multiple occasions, some have advocated making all drugs legal, but that supposed idealism ends up being a danger to public safety and is almost always rescinded.

Fentanyl is only the latest in a long parade of such nightmares going back to opium and beyond. While the Trump administration is justified in cracking down on the Mexican Cartels and China for importing Fentanyl, why do so many of our citizens feel a need for this hugely-destructive drug in the first place?

Some of the explanation for this cycle of addiction must be that our entire society is constantly bombarded from early childhood—on television most of all but virtually everywhere else—with propaganda that drugs in various forms are the salvation from life’s pain. Not only is this not true, it is most often absolutely the reverse, no matter who is selling the drugs. We saw this writ large during COVID-19. Fentanyl is the dark, or darker, side of all this, as are the use of various drugs for the young to alter their “gender” even before puberty.

We live in a society where pharmaceutical corporations hypnotize us into thinking there is a pill for everything. They are doing the same to the medical community on a daily basis for mutual gain. Too many doctors have become prisoners of both the pharmaceutical companies and themselves, leaning expectantly on lobbyists for the latest cure-alls. It’s a toxic syndrome that must be stopped.

In the midst of the monumental changes initiated by the Trump administration, arguably the most important, the most salubrious to all of us in the end, stems from the supposedly controversial appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services. He has long been an opponent of this form of advertising, not to mention numerous other neglected aspects of public health, including but not limited to what we eat. That last is more than arguably the most significant of all.

Mr. Kennedy has been attacked in a variety of ways, most prominently because he is accused of not having the proper credentials for the job. Some of us, given what has occurred in recent years, might consider that a feature, not a bug, but nevertheless he is flanked by Jay Bhatturchaya as the new Director of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bhatturchaya is about as credentialed as anyone you could find with many accomplishments in the field, the greatest of which may have been to have led the way to sanity internationally during COVID as co-author of the Great Barrington Declaration.

Mr. Kennedy will undoubtedly make mistakes, as we all do, and many will be watching to correct them, but his overweening goal- to Make America Healthy Again—deserves the highest ;raise. With our embarrassingly low longevity numbers compared to other developed nations coupled with the fact we pay more for our healthcare than any, we are in clear need of a drastic course correction.

It’s going to be one difficult correction since an unholy percentage of our congresspeople suck at the teat of Big Pharma.

But bravo, Bobby. Go for it. We the People are behind you. MAHA!

Ron Johnson Probes ‘Development’ And ‘Safety’ Of Big Pharma’s Covid Shots

Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., is demanding answers from Big Pharma giants over the creation and safety of their Covid shots, The Federalist has learned.

In a series of Wednesday letters obtained by The Federalist, the Badger State Republican requested the CEOs of Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson, and the president of BioNTech to provide communications and records related to their production and distribution of their respective Covid jabs dating back to January 2020. The requisition, Johnson noted, is part of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations’ inquiry into the “development and deployment of COVID-19 vaccines, as well as the adverse events and injuries associated with these vaccines.”

“I expect you to fully comply with this request, but I am mindful that your company may choose to mimic the Department of Health and Human Services’ (‘HHS’) past efforts to conceal records about the development, safety, and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines,” Johnson wrote. “Any attempt to obstruct or delay responses to this request will result in compulsory process.”

In his letter to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla, for example, the GOP senator is requesting the “names and titles, along with the dates they held those titles, of each Pfizer employee involved in the development” of the pharmaceutical company’s Covid shot, and a “complete list of entities Pfizer contracted, collaborated, or otherwise worked with” the creation and “testing” of its Covid jab. He further asked that “all communications between or among Pfizer employees or contractors and all communications sent to or by any federal entity, employee, or contractor” regarding the shot’s development be provided to the subcommittee.

Concerns about the safety and efficacy of the Covid jabs have been prevalent since their distribution to the American public. Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, for instance, has issued several advisories in recent years highlighting potential hazards associated with the mRNA shots, including a reported increased risk of heart-related problems (myocarditis) in young men.

Equally notable about Johnson’s Wednesday requests, however, is the senator’s demand that the named pharma giants forfeit “[a]ll communications” they’ve had with Big Tech platforms and social media companies since January 2020 “referring or relating to adverse events” associated with the Covid shots. He specifically noted companies such as Alphabet (Google and YouTube), Meta (Facebook and Instagram), and X (formerly Twitter).

As The Federalist previously reported, the Biden administration regularly colluded with Big Tech giants to censor Covid-related information and posts that went against the federal government’s preferred narratives. This included requests from government officials to social media companies to shadowban and/or remove disfavored posts focused on the Covid jabs.

Despite the harms such an insidious relationship could have on Americans’ First Amendment rights, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to stop the government’s coordination with Big Tech to suppress speech they don’t like. In Murthy v. Missouri, the court’s majority (6-3) arbitrarily declared the plaintiff doctors victimized by the government’s censorship practices (and two states) lacked standing to sue on the matter.

Johnson has asked the named Big Pharma companies to comply with his requests by April 16.

Zelenskiy says details of foreign troop contingent in Ukraine could be ready in a month

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Friday that European military planners could be ready within a month with details of a foreign troop contingent in Ukraine seen as critical to ending the war with Russia.

Kyiv is seeking security guarantees from its allies in the event of a peace agreement with Moscow to prevent a repeat of its February 2022 full-scale invasion.

Speaking to reporters in Kyiv after meeting British and French military chiefs, Zelenskiy said many other countries would also contribute to the effort, which envisages foreign troops patrolling Ukrainian land, sea and airspace.

"I think the teams need about a month, no longer, and we will be fully ready with an understanding of this infrastructure," he said.

Zelenskiy added that military working groups would meet weekly until then to finalise the details. He did not specify which other nations would contribute.

Ukrainian army leaders including Kyiv's top general and the chief of its general staff also met the visiting European military officials on Friday.

Zelenskiy, who spoke shortly after a Russian missile attack killed 14 people in his hometown of Kryvyi Rih, said Kyiv's partners have "a lot of understanding" of Ukraine's needs.

"Today we discussed the issue of not only the quantity (of troops), but also the mandate," he said. "It is important for me."

19 Democratic State AGs Sue To Stop Trump Blocking Non-Citizen Voting

by Jacob Burg via The Epoch Times,

A group of 19 Democratic state attorneys general filed a lawsuit on April 3 disputing President Donald Trump’s executive order that requires voters to verify they are U.S. citizens and prevents states from counting mail-in ballots they receive after Election Day.

Filed in Boston federal court, the lawsuit follows two others that challenge the order. The plaintiffs say the order “usurps the States’ constitutional power and seeks to amend election law by fiat.”

“The president’s attempt to control our elections, intimidate voters, and limit Americans’ right to vote is unconstitutional, undemocratic, and frankly, un-American,” said New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat.

On March 25, Trump signed an executive order, titled “Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections,” mandating voters to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. The order also aims to stop states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day for presidential and congressional elections.

Last year, the states joining in the lawsuit had allowed late ballots that were postmarked ahead of Election Day to be counted if they arrived within a specific window established by state law.

In his order, Trump cited Denmark and Sweden’s policies of not accepting late-arriving mail-in ballots regardless of when they are postmarked and said the United States should follow the same policy.

California and Nevada led the group of 19 states in arguing that Trump lacks the sole power to amend states’ election procedures. Congress, they said, has the power under the Constitution to preempt state laws for federal elections.

“Neither the Constitution nor Congress authorize the president’s attempted voting restrictions,” California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The Democratic National Committee and Democratic congressional leaders, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), are already challenging Trump’s order in court.

In their lawsuit, the 19 states argued that the rule violates the Constitution and the National Voting Rights Act, which allows voting as long as a person attests to their citizenship under the threat of perjury.

While Democrats have said it’s already illegal for non-citizens to vote, Republicans have raised concerns about how the lack of verification may allow some noncitizens to lie in order to register.

The attorneys general also accused Trump’s order of violating states’ constitutional authority over elections by using the loss of federal funding and potential Justice Department investigations as threats in order to compel them to comply.

In his order, Trump argued that states “fail adequately to vet voters’ citizenship, and, in recent years, the Department of Justice has failed to prioritize and devote sufficient resources for enforcement of these provisions” and alleged the Biden administration allowed illegal immigrants on state voter rolls.

When he announced the order, the president said it was required to “straighten out our elections.”
