Gristedes owner offers to test socialist NYC candidate’s ‘Soviet’ city-run groceries — but there’s a catch

The owner of Gristedes said he’d lend a supermarket to City Hall to test one liberal candidate’s “Soviet”-style plan for government-run grocery stores – if he’ll pay for shoplifting losses.

John Catsimatidis, the billionaire mogul behind the Gristedes and Food Emporium chains, pledged he would be “helpful” after Democratic socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani unveiled a plan to create a network of city-run supermarkets.

Zohran Mamdani’s plan for city-owned grocery stores would cost about $60 million to build.Matthew McDermott

“If they want to try an experiment, I will be helpful — as long as the city makes up the shortfall for shoplifting,” Catsimatidis told The Post.

“Will they allow people to shoplift? What will the policy on shoplifting be? I just want to know,” said Catsimatidis, who has previously grabbed headlines for encouraging his in-store staff to tackle shoplifters to hold them until police arrive.

Mamdani, who is currently polling second behind frontrunner Andrew Cuomo ahead of the June Democratic Party primary, has said he’d launch city-owned grocery stores to drive down grocery prices for New Yorkers.

“These stores will operate without profit motive, or having to pay property taxes or rent, and will pass those savings onto you,” Mamdani, who is now serving in the state Assembly, said in a TikTok video.

His plan, which calls for one store in each borough, would cost an estimated $60 million.

It has drawn condemnation from local grocery owners such as Jason Ferraira, a board member of the National Supermarket Association, who said it would create “Soviet” markets where customers would have limited selection for items like bread and milk.

Catsimatidis, an ally and insider of President Trump, was open to the idea of negotiating with the unabashedly liberal candidate if he were to end up in City Hall.

“It could help the city feed the hungry. There’s a deal to be made. We’ll help make it happen,” Catsimatidis said, though he will not be voting for Mamdani for Mayor. MAMStefan Jeremiah for New York Post

US Justice Department repeals Biden-era 'zero tolerance' policy for gun dealers

The U.S. Justice Department on Monday repealed a Biden-era "zero tolerance" policy which called for revoking the licenses of gun dealers who willfully committed serious violations such as failing to conduct background checks, an FBI spokesperson said.

The reversal of the policy follows President Donald Trump ordering the department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to conduct a wholesale review of all of the gun regulations implemented under his Democratic predecessor President Joe Biden.

Kash Patel, who is currently serving as both the FBI director and the acting ATF director, spoke to the members of the Gun Owners of America during their August meeting. He claimed falsely that the former head of the ATF during Biden's presidency wanted to take away people's Second Amendment right to bear arms.

The zero-tolerance policy repealed on Monday called for the ATF, which regulates the firearms industry, to revoke the licenses of gun dealers if they willfully sold firearms to prohibited people such as convicted felons, failed to conduct background checks, falsified records or failed to respond to law enforcement requests to help trace firearms used to commit crimes.

Gun-control groups had supported the Biden-era policy, saying it served as an important tool toward cracking down on illegal straw purchasing and gun trafficking.

The firearms industry was largely critical of it, saying it was leading the government to shut down gun shops over minor infractions uncovered during inspections.

Lawrence G. Keane, senior vice president of the NSSF, the Firearm Industry Trade Association, praised the decision to repeal the policy.

"This reckless policy throttled small businesses and drove many to shut down by threatening crippling administrative costs to fight against penalties for minor errors and infractions that were previously reconciled in good faith between ATF officials and law-abiding firearm retailers," Keane said in a statement.

Trump Tells Bibi He Might Not Reduce Tariffs On Israel: 'We Give You $4BN A Year'

Update(1759ET): Netanyahu did not get the quick or clear answer he was hoping for from President Trump in the Monday afternoon meeting in the Oval Office. Netanyahu pledged Israel will move quickly to close the trade gap and reduce trade barriers with Washington.

"Israel can serve as a model for many countries who ought to do the same," the Israeli leader said, adding, "I'm a free trade champion, and free trade has to be fair trade." However, Trump indicated he might not reduce tariffs on Israel. "We give Israel $4 billion a year," Trump said, and quipped in a troll-like manner: "Congratulations by the way." Watch the awkward scene play out of Bibi getting put in his place...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington on Sunday for a visit to the White House, in a stay which is planned through Tuesday. The two leaders are meeting Monday afternoon.

He will be the first foreign leader to meet President Trump in-person in an effort to negotiate a deal to remove Trump's tariffs, which for Israel is a 17% rate, the result of a significant US bilateral trade deficit.

"Upon his arrival in Washington with his wife, Sara Netanyahu, the premier headed from the airport to Blair House in a convoy, where he met with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer," Israeli media wrote.

And Axios noted just ahead of the the trip that Israel tried to "avoid the tariffs Trump imposed on nearly every country in the world by announcing it would preemptively lift all tariffs on U.S. products. It didn't work."

This visit, which is Netanyahu's second to the White House since Trump took office (the first was in early February), was by all accounts rather hastily put together, and also high on the agenda will be the Gaza crisis. Currently there are still 59 hostages still in Hamas and Islamic Jihad captivity - with many feared deceased.

Israel has controversially expanded the war, and now has Rafah surrounded once again and has ordered an evacuation of the civilian population. Hundreds of thousands have fled the southern Gaza city, also as basic necessities of life for the Palestinian population are running out.

Netanyahu’s office has has further indicated that "Israel-Turkey relations, the Iranian threat and confronting the International Criminal Court" will be on the agenda.

Trump may emerge from the meeting declaring that Israel is an example of how his tariff policy is working - that foreign capitals will come scrambling to negotiate.

One interesting aspect to Netanyahu's travels is the impact the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant is having on his itinerary. He's still not able to visit most of the European continent, and last week's Hungary trip was the first, after Budapest declared it would not arrest him or cooperate with the ICC.

Times of Israel pointed out that "The Wing of Zion state plane took a flight path that increased the journey from Budapest to Washington by some 400 kilometers in order to avoid flying over countries seen as likely to enforce the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court should the plane be forced to make an emergency landing."

"As Israel believes that Ireland, Iceland and the Netherlands would all enforce the ICC warrant, issued for alleged war crimes in Gaza, Wing of Zion instead flew over Croatia, Italy and France," the report added.

Hungary last week declared it is exiting membership in the The Hague-based ICC due to the action against Netanyahu, with PM Viktor Orban decrying that it's a "political tool" of Israel's enemies. The Trump White House is certainly on board with Orban's decision.

Trump Stuns By Saying US Is In 'Direct' Nuclear Talks With Iran

In a surprise statement President Trump says he has been holding "direct talks" with Iran and a "very big meeting" involving "very high-level" officials is planned for this coming Saturday.

The declaration was unexpected given that as recently as this weekend Iran repeated that it would not hold talks with Washington so long as "maximum pressure" by the White House remains in place. Tehran has also rejected that talks can happen while Trump threatens to bomb Iran.

The other surprise is the context, as Trump made the claims while hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the Oval Office. The Israeli leader has applauded Trump's return to maximum pressure, and has hinted at Israeli military action if Iran is perceived as pursuing a nuclear bomb.

"We have a very big meeting on Saturday, and we’re dealing with them directly," Trump stated in reference to the Iranians. "You know, a lot of people say, ‘Oh, maybe you’re going through surrogates, you’re not dealing directly, you’re dealing through other countries.’ No — we’re dealing with them directly."

"I think everyone agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious. And the obvious is not something that I want to be involved with, or frankly, that Israel wants to be involved with, if they can avoid it," Trump said, in apparent reference to a military option.

Continuing to speak about potential future strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, he continued, "So we're going to see if we can avoid it. But it's getting to be very dangerous territory, and hopefully those talks will be successful. And I think it would be in Iran's best interest if they are successful."

But Iran certainly hasn't confirmed that direct talks have been happening. Instead, Trump could simply be anticipating talks which haven't happened yet but are in the works in terms of preparation - though he did clearly emphasize direct talks were happening. A Monday afternoon Bloomberg report notes a fresh Iranian Foreign Ministry statement as follows:

Earlier Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said the country was waiting for a US response to what he called a “responsible, generous, and wise offer.” He added that the Gulf-Arab Sultanate of Oman, which has facilitated dialogue between Tehran and Washington in the past, is a “main candidate” to mediate talks with the US if they take place.

“The offer for direct negotiations isn’t acceptable to us for reasons repeatedly stated before, but we’re ready for indirect negotiations through Oman,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said earlier, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. “The ball is in the US court.”

At the moment, a second US aircraft carrier is en route to the Red Sea region to support Yemen operations. The USS Carl Vinson is in the Indian Ocean, and Iran has been carefully monitoring its progress, with reports of Tehran leadership having put the Iranian armed forces on high alert.

Advanced American bombers are also conducting counter-Houthi operations out of Deigo Garcia in the Indian Ocean, and Tehran is worried about their proximity. Many analysts believe these Pentagon assets were moved there in case anything big happens with Iran.

Tehran has also been warning Gulf Arab states that they must not cooperate with any kind of US or Israeli military operation targeting the Islamic Republic. So far countries like Saudi Arabia have signaled they will stay out of any conflict, and will refuse their airspace for any preemptive attacks.

US and India discuss tariffs and progress towards 'fair' trade

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar held a call on Monday to discuss U.S. tariffs on India and how to make progress towards a "fair and balanced trade relationship," the State Department said.

Jaishankar also said on social media earlier on Monday that he had spoken to Rubio about the early conclusion of a bilateral trade deal.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Trump said last week that he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the U.S. and higher duties on dozens of other countries, including some of Washington's biggest trading partners, rattling global markets and bewildering U.S. allies.

CONTEXT

India does not plan to retaliate against Trump's 26% tariff on imports from the Asian nation, an Indian government official said on Sunday, citing ongoing talks for a deal between the countries.

KEY QUOTES

"They also discussed U.S. reciprocal tariffs on India and how to make progress toward a fair and balanced trade relationship," the State Department said in a statement.

"Agreed on the importance of the early conclusion of the Bilateral Trade Agreement. Look forward to remaining in touch," Jaishankar said in his social media post.
