NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte reiterated on Wednesday that United States President Donald Trump was right to say that the Arctic region needs to be protected.
"There is only one country bordering [the region] outside NATO, and that is Russia. And I would argue there is a ninth country, which is China, which is increasingly active [there] ... We have to do more and protect the Arctic against Russian and Chinese influences ... We are working on that, making sure that collectively we will defend" the region, he said while speaking in Davos.
Talking about "tensions in the alliance," Rutte stressed that it is "impossible" for him to comment on that in public, as if he were to do that, he would no longer be able to "defuse [these] tensions and deescalate." The NATO chief shared that for that reason, he is working on such issues, including Greenland, "behind the scenes."
