The Pentagon will gradually reduce the US participation in several NATO advisory groups, shrinking the American military footprint in Europe, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.
The changes, which affect around 200 personnel, will mostly impact the alliance's 30 Centers of Excellence, which provide training on specialized military skills. Rather than withdrawing troops all at once, the US will not replace departing staff, phasing down its role over several years.
Though the sources said the decision predates Trump's renewed push to assert control over Greenland, the move follows other cuts to US security support for Europe, including last year's troop withdrawal from Romania and aid reductions to the Baltics.
