Orban: Hungary won't ratify EU-Mercosur deal

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban told M1 TV on Tuesday that Budapest will "never approve" the free trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur.

Moreover, Orban accused the European Commission of changing the rules to enable the agreement to enter into force without the approval of the parliaments of EU member states. "That's why farmers are angry. It's not just about the economic problems with Mercosur, not just about the future of agriculture, but also about how they deceived farmers by bypassing national parliaments and making decisions that are detrimental to farmers," he explained.

Although the deal secured the approval of the majority of EU countries, Hungary, along with France, Poland, Austria, and Ireland, voted against. Additionally, the trade agreement sparked fierce backlash from the European organization of farmers, who warned Europe would see the influx of cheaper imports as a result.
