The 8th United States Circuit Court of Appeals halted on Wednesday a lower court ruling that had limited how federal immigration agents may respond to peaceful demonstrations in Minnesota as the case continues.
The decision pauses restrictions imposed last week by US District Judge Kate Menendez, which barred Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers from arresting peaceful protesters, using pepper spray or other nonlethal crowd-control tools, or stopping vehicles without reasonable suspicion of interference with enforcement activity.
The case stems from a lawsuit filed in December against ICE and the Department of Homeland Security, ahead of protests in Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent.
