The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a tanker was hit by a projectile northwest of Dubai, igniting a fire on the vessel's starboard side.
The incident occurred about 31 nautical miles from the city, according to the ship's company security officer and the crew was reported "accounted for and safe."
Authorities have opened an investigation and UKMTO advised ships in the area to proceed with caution and report "suspicious activity."
