US President Donald Trump signed two executive orders on quantum technology at the White House on Monday, launching a national effort to build a quantum computer capable of major scientific calculations and expand quantum-enabled sensors and networks within five years.
Trump said the second order directs federal agencies to transition their computer systems to quantum cryptography by 2031, calling the standards "extremely strong."
He also said the US should lead wider adoption of the technology to protect future digital infrastructure.
