EU deploys 17 aircraft amid Spain, France wildfires

The European Union announced on Monday that it is sending 11 aircraft to France and six planes to Spain, 17 in total, as wildfires force over 300,000 evacuations across both countries. France will receive seven planes and four helicopters from Czechia, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Slovakia, Sweden, and Turkey. Spain will get six planes from Greece, Italy, and Turkey, plus 134 personnel and 41 vehicles from Portugal.

Copernicus satellites will keep providing emergency mapping, and an EU liaison officer is in Bordeaux. "No country should ever have to face a disaster of this scale alone ... Europe will stand with you until the fires are out," Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said

Earlier in the day, at a Castellon emergency centre, Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez said burned land has risen to over 170,000 hectares, six times higher than last year's total, and admitted "difficult and complex hours lie ahead."
