Israel’s Shin Bet security service confirmed Saturday that a significant Iranian threat against Yair Netanyahu, son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, prompted his urgent evacuation from Florida to Israel, the Jerusalem Post reported.
“There was indeed a significant threat to harm Yair Netanyahu, and in light of this, following a situation assessment, a decision was made to extract him together with his security team urgently back to Israel,” the Shin Bet said.
The Jerusalem Post said the threat was first reported Tuesday by Newsmax, citing a US law enforcement source familiar with the matter.
Israeli intelligence uncovered an Iranian plot in December to assassinate Yair Netanyahu in Florida and alerted US authorities, according to the Newsmax report. Iranian operatives were already in the Miami area and had carried out surveillance of his residence and movements, it said.
Yair Netanyahu was instructed to leave immediately and returned to Israel without collecting his belongings, according to the report.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said last week that Iran had tried to assassinate one of his sons but did not identify which one.
“Iran marked one of my sons. Iran tried to murder him — tried to murder one of my sons,” Netanyahu told Israel’s Channel 14.
