Sleeping with a psychopath? Warning signs — and how to avoid ‘negative encounters’

Beware of psychopaths under — or in — your bed.

One psychologist with experience treating the neuropsychiatric disorder has revealed the top warning signs that someone close to you might be more than just a little bit antisocial — and the probability could be higher than you think.

Writing for Psychology Today, Kurt W. Ela revealed that rubbing up against psychopaths is a part of daily life for many Americans, particularly in the Northeastern states.

An associate professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Ela makes his home in Washington, D.C. — considered to be the capital of psychopathy in the Lower 48 states, with Connecticut, Maine, New York and Maryland rounding out the grim top 5.

Psychopathy, much like sociopathy, is not a recognized psychiatric diagnosis — the closest a mental health professional like Ely can get to the definition is antisocial personality disorder, or ASPD, which features traits of both.

“Common hallmarks of this disorder are regularly flouting the law; lying/deception; being prone to aggressiveness; and not experiencing remorse or guilt. It is also difficult for those with antisocial personality disorder to form meaningful emotional attachments or experience deep empathy,” Ely wrote.

Another common trait, Ely wrote, is career choice. Psychopaths are drawn to professions that “require a strong degree of detachment,” such as civil servants, surgeons, lawyers and CEOs.

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), approximately 1.2 percent of men and 0.3-0.7 of of women possess enough traits to be considered psychopathic.

While Ely hastens to add that these individuals are “not necessarily violent,” like the weirdos and serial killers you might see in movies and on television, they probably “do not make great neighbors.”

Here’s what to do when you find yourself in confrontation with someone you’re worried might be a psychopath, in the interest of limiting ‘negative encounters,’ according to Ela.

Or you could just move to North Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Nebraska, and South Carolina — the five states with the lowest rates of occurrence.

First, trust your instincts

“There are often warning signs when you are dealing with a person who has antisocial traits. They may ask you for more favors or special treatment than they are willing to reciprocate. Their emotions may be “off,” or they may show little interest in you or your life. You may just feel uncomfortable around them without knowing why. If you experience any of these feelings, you will probably wish to distance yourself,” Ela said.

Let them know that you know

“It is important that the sociopathic individual knows that you are onto them. This way they realize that they cannot manipulate or take advantage of you. It will also be important not to share overly personal information which can later be used against you. Instead, keep interactions bland and superficial.”

Just steer clear

“An individual with ASPD can be impulsive and vindictive. If they feel wronged or challenged, things can escalate quickly. And since they worry less about social consequences and do not experience remorse, their actions can be dangerous.”

Migrants’ pricey cars towed outside NYC shelter in area where they begged door to door

These migrants appear to have better rides than some Brooklyn families they’ve been hitting up for cash, food and clothes.

Authorities on Friday night towed at least five unregistered vehicles apparently being used by migrants that were illegally parked outside the city’s controversial tent shelter at Floyd Bennett Field, according to Assemblywoman Jaime Williams (D-Brooklyn)

The wild scene – which Williams caught on video and shared on Facebook — included a white pickup truck with no plates being towed from a grassy lot that is federal parkland to the dismay of at least one migrant seen pleading to gain access to the vehicle.

A minty Toyota Sienna with Florida dealership plates is also shown illegally parked along a fence near a row of electric bikes.

Other vehicles in the lot also included two Toyota Sequoia SUVs, according to Williams.

“This is insane,” Williams fumed to the Post Saturday. “Where did they get the money [to buy vehicles]? This is bigger than all of us.”

“It is bizarre,” added Williams, who represents southeast Brooklyn neighborhoods including Marine Park and Canarsie.

“People have to wake up and realize what’s happening. These are the same people who are knocking on doors begging for food and money”

Over the past few weeks, residents in Marine Park – a predominantly working class, blue-collar neighborhood  — have openly complained about asylum seeker families showing up on their doorsteps asking for spare change and other aid. Some previously told The Post they fear for their safety.

Historic Floyd Bennett Field has become a filthy eyesore since taking in migrants in November, said Williams, ripping the Biden Administration for “turn[ing] a blind eye” to New York City’s struggles dealing with its migrant crisis.

“Floyd Bennett Field, our national park, has become a dumping ground,” she said.

The vehicles were spotted by federal park police, who had them towed. The NYPD’s 63rd Precinct also responded, said Williams.

Messages left with the Mayor’s Office were not returned, but the NYPD said it had no report of file about the vehicles being towed.

Mo. secretary of state threatens to drop Biden from 2024 ballot if ‘new legal standard’ removes Trump

Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft is threatening to remove President Biden from the election ballot as other states make efforts to disqualify former President Trump from securing a second term over his actions during the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021.

The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide whether Trump can appear on Republican primary ballots in Colorado after the state Supreme Court ruled he couldn’t, citing the 14th Amendment’s insurrection clause.

The high court sided with a lower court that ruled Trump incited his supporters as Congress was certifying Biden’s 2020 election victory. The Colorado Supreme Court decision was the first time in history that Section 3 of the 14th Amendment was used to bar a presidential contender from the ballot.

Maine’s secretary of state decided Trump should be removed from the ballot for the same reason. Trump is appealing that decision.

On Friday, Ashcroft, a Republican, said the efforts in Colorado and Maine were “disgraceful” and “undermines our republic.”

“While I expect the Supreme Court to overturn this, if not, Secretaries of State will step in & ensure the new legal standard for @realDonaldTrump applies equally to @JoeBiden !,” Ashcroft wrote on X.

“I’m not in favor of going down this path. But if we will go down this path, it’s inevitable, if the Supreme Court does not stop this,” Ashcroft told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “The rules will be applied equally. I just hope they will not be the rules of Colorado and Maine.”

Republicans have heavily criticized Democrats for attempting to remove Trump from 2024 presidential election ballots, saying it undermines the will of voters.

Last month, Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick suggested taking Biden off the ballot because of his handling of the southern border.

“Seeing what happened in Colorado tonight … makes me think — except we believe in democracy in Texas — maybe we should take Joe Biden off the ballot in Texas for allowing 8 million people to cross the border since he’s been president, disrupting our state far more than anything anyone else has done in recent history,” Patrick said in an interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on “The Ingraham Angle.”

In a letter submitted to the high court, more than a dozen states signaled their support for Trump, including Missouri.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Ashcroft’s office. A White House spokesperson responded with “No” when asked for comment.
