DHS internal report admits screening of illegal border crossers isn't what Mayorkas says it was

How many times has Joe Biden and all his minions assured the public that the millions of illegal border crossers they are allowing into the country are "carefully vetted"?

A new Department of Homeland Security Inspector General report says they were not.

But that didn't stop the Biden administration from gaslighting of the public.

In May 2023 we got this from a DHS spokesperson, according to NBC News:

After more than 11,000 migrants were caught crossing the southern border on Tuesday, the Biden administration is now preparing a memo that will direct Customs and Border Protection to begin releasing migrants into the U.S. without court dates or the ability to track them, according to three sources familiar with the plans.

...

A DHS spokesperson said the new policy will apply only to migrants who have been carefully vetted.

According to the Texas Public Policy Foundation, it always goes like this:

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has stated numerous times—publicly and before Congress—that “all non-citizen migrants are vetted before being released into the United States.”

Or from Mayorkas himself, like this:

Question: Yes, uh, Secretary, we have read that the Administration is considering releasing migrants after they're being carefully vetted. And we just have some teams in El Paso yesterday that observed some migrants being vetted for an hour and then afterwards being released with a permit to stay in the country for a year. I wonder how that process is being done and how secure you are all those all those vettings taking place on the border?

Secretary Mayorkas: So, U.S. Customs and Border Protection screens and vets individuals whom we encounter. Individuals – the vast majority of individuals will be returned, those who do not qualify from Border Patrol stations or Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities.

We often, as has every administration, release individuals into immigration enforcement proceedings, and those individuals if they do not qualify for relief will be removed. We screen and vet individuals whom we encounter.

Now it comes out that actually, they don't, and what's more Mayorkas knew it.

According to a report from Fox News:

A concerning new report from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Inspector General concluded that DHS has not been effectively screening and vetting non-citizens and asylum seekers entering the United States.

The report, obtained by Fox News' Bill Melugin, showed that U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents can not access all federal data to complete thorough screening and vetting of those seeking entry into the U.S.

The report stated that without capabilities to effectively screen and vet non-citizens, CBP is unable to conduct complete screening and vetting of all non-citizen travelers at air and land ports of entry.

Additionally, the inspector general's office said that without a dedicated technology capability and resources to conduct interim screenings, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) may not promptly identify asylum seekers with derogatory information who remain in the country for extended periods of time while awaiting an asylum decision.

That's why we are seeing illegal migrants rolling into in the country like this:

Haitian migrant, now a double homicide suspect, was allowed into US by Biden admin via controversial app -Fox News, April 17, 2024

Migrant church worker accused of molesting girls as young as 6 snuck back into US twice after being deported -New York Post, March 18, 2024

Let's not even get into the terror suspects (and spies) who got let into the country on Mayorkas's watch, such as these charmers:

Terror suspect from Tajikistan illegally crossed border into San Diego, was let in by officers: sources -New York Post, June 12, 2024

They're just lettin' them in, even though they know they haven't properly vetted them instead of sending them back across the border to, at a minimum, wait until they can vet them.

Mayorkas, of course, did know that vetting was inadequate and they were letting them in anyway, as his 2022 statement, done in that avuncular, silkily assuring way, suggests, as World Tribune reports:

As he was being grilled by Republican members of the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) chief Alejandro Mayorkas admitted that illegal immigrants who are released into the U.S. by Team Biden will “undoubtedly” commit crimes.

He also admitted that he had lost track of 42 terror-watchlist suspects his agency had allowed into the country.

Fox News, in its summary of the DHS watchdog report notes that five recommendations were issued regarding data access for Border Patrol with which to do vetting, as well as a section on continuous monitoring of these asylum "parolees" (which sounds pretty costly, actually, particularly since most will get their asylum cases thrown out as phony claims). No word on the costs added. There also was a section on handling "derogatory" information on alien criminals commiting crimes against Americans while claiming asylum -- apparently, every time they got a report, they ignored it.

The DHS says it signed off on the recommendations, but based on Mayorkas's leadership, more likely, Mayorkas's DHS will simply ignore them, claim they need more funds, and then wait for the next news cycle.

It's a valuable report to see for normal citizens, because the report is not a surprise -- all we have to do is read the newspapers for evidence that little or no vetting is being done and criminals and terrorists are rolling in, the cases of which seem to be accelerating in the number of outrages seen. Whole criminal gangs, after all, from Venezuela have been imported in and are operating their criminal enterprises here now. How'd that happen?

It should put Mayorkas on his backfoot for awhile, given the growing concern from the voters as to just what he has allowed in. While tech may be blamed for the lack of vetting, the big problem is policy. Letting anyone in who is unvetted is forbidden, or should be forbidden by law. Migrants who want in need to be told 'no' if resources are inadequate, not released with even less vetting than normal legal immigrants get. When Mayorkas spews blather about the immigration system being "broken," this is what is broken.

OpenAI Expands Lobbying Army To Influence Regulation

A new report from the Financial Times reveals that OpenAI is expanding its international lobbyist Army, aiming to sway politicians and regulators who are tightening their grip on artificial intelligence.

OpenAI's move to expand its lobbyist team from three at the start of 2023 to 35 and soon to 50 by the end of the year comes after sweetheart deals with Microsoft and Apple to infiltrate billions of smartphones worldwide. Also, just weeks ago, the startup dissolved a team focused on ensuring AI safety.

"We are not approaching this from a perspective of we just need to get in there and quash regulations . . . because we don't have a goal of maximizing profit; we have a goal of making sure that AGI benefits all of humanity," said Anna Makanju, OpenAI's vice-president of government affairs, referring to artificial general intelligence.

OpenAI's lobbyists are being positioned in countries to counter the spread of AI legislation around the world. They're being sent to Belgium, the UK, Ireland, France, Singapore, India, Brazil, and the US, countries where AI legislation is the most advanced.

"Initially, OpenAI recruited people deeply involved in AI policy and specialists, whereas now they are just hiring run-of-the-mill tech lobbyists, which is a very different strategy," said one person who has directly engaged with OpenAI on creating legislation.

"They're just wanting to influence legislators in ways that Big Tech has done for over a decade," the person said.

Makanju said the startup is attempting to address some hangovers from the social media age, which has sparked great "distrust of Silicon Valley companies."

"Unfortunately, people are often seeing AI with the same lens," she said, adding, "We spend a lot of time making sure people understand that this technology is quite different, and the regulatory interventions that make sense for it will be very different."

David Robinson, head of policy planning at OpenAI, said the global affairs team has ambitious goals: "The mission is safe and broadly beneficial, and so what does that mean? It means creating laws that not only let us innovate and bring beneficial technology to people but also end up in a world where the technology is safe."

It's unbelievable—the approach these executives took, pretending to hold themselves accountable while proposing new laws for their own products.

OpenAI needs to start following laws, and the first one they can start with is copyright.

It's clear that the moment the safety team dissolved, OpenAI started ramping up its lobbying efforts to exert influence on AI legislation worldwide. This is Typical Silicon Valley behavior—nothing more.

Los Angeles City Council Ends COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate For City Workers

by Aldgra Fredly via The Epoch Times,

The Los Angeles City Council ended the city’s policy requiring municipal employees to be vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus on Tuesday, in a 13-0 vote.

The ruling allows city workers to reapply for their jobs if they were fired or quit due to the vaccination requirement. Two council members were absent during the vote.

During the public comment section of the council meeting, attorney Jennifer Kennedy said it was time to end the city’s “cruel mandate” that had resulted in the termination of many city workers.

“You stripped careers and commands from your LAPD officers and your LAFD firefighters,” said Ms. Kennedy, who said she represents hundreds of city workers.

“You stole the livelihood of these dedicated public servants and you put your citizens in danger.”

Janine Bedard, a former sergeant with the LAPD, told the council meeting that she lost her job after serving 24 years in the department due to her refusal to be vaccinated.

“I was advised a new condition of employment was that I needed to be vaccinated,” Ms. Bedard said.

“I was shamed and told I was a public health risk and I could not complete my duties as a sergeant if I was not vaccinated. I’m here today to request that you finally rescind the vaccine mandate.”

Council President Paul Krekorian and council member Traci Park introduced the motion last October instructing the City Administrative Officer to report on “the feasibility, impacts and timeline” of repealing the vaccination mandate for current and future city employees.

In 2021, a group of six LAPD officers filed a lawsuit against Los Angeles over the city’s COVID-19 vaccination requirement for city workers, arguing that the policy violated their constitutional rights.

“The United States Supreme Court has explained that invasive medical testing, injections, and other bodily intrusions constitute a search within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment,“ the suit reads.

”The Constitution protects a person’s right to refuse unwanted medical care.”

In April last year, Los Angeles County ended its vaccination requirement for existing and new county employees, which followed a prior related action by the LA County Board of Supervisors to end vaccination requirements for certain contractors.

The Biden administration ended its COVID-19 vaccination requirements for federal employees and contractors in May 2023, citing a 98 percent compliance rate among its federal workforce, as well as a significant decline in hospitalizations and fatalities.

Teva sues Corcept over mifepristone 'monopoly' for rare disorder

Teva Pharmaceuticals sued rival drugmaker Corcept Therapeutics in federal court in San Francisco on Thursday, accusing it of monopolizing the market for mifepristone-based Korlym, used to treat a rare hormonal disorder called Cushing's syndrome.

The lawsuit said Corcept and specialty pharmacy Optime Care, the sole distributor of Korlym, orchestrated “a multifaceted scheme to prolong Corcept’s monopoly by stifling competition from Teva at every turn.” Teva accused Corcept of "paying bribes and kickbacks" to physicians to keep them prescribing brand Korlym.

Korlym's active ingredient is mifepristone, the same drug used for medication abortion at the center of Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling that rejected a legal challenge seeking to curtail access to the drug for terminating pregnancies.

Teva's antitrust lawsuit, which does not refer to the drug's use for abortion, said Corcept and Optime have a long-term exclusive-dealing arrangement that bars Optime from distributing any medication that competes with Korlym.

Corcept and Optime did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Thursday.

Teva in a statement said that Corcept's anticompetitive conduct "has prevented patients with Cushing’s syndrome from accessing lower-cost generics to treat their debilitating disease.”

Cushing’s, caused by too much of the hormone cortisol in the body, affects about 20,000 people in the United States and can be fatal, the lawsuit said. Symptoms include abnormal weight gain and a fatty hump between the shoulders.

Teva said it launched its generic version of Korlym five months ago, but “during that time Teva has captured close to zero market share.”

The lawsuit said Teva has tried to convince Optime to distribute Teva's generic Korlym, but Optime has refused.

"Optime’s representatives made clear that there was nothing Teva could do to gain access to the Optime distribution channel," according to the lawsuit.

Teva accused Corcept of artificially inflating the cost of Korlym based on the company’s market power. The lawsuit said a year’s supply of the drug can be “several hundred thousand dollars or more.”

Corcept sued Teva in 2018 in New Jersey federal court for allegedly infringing on Korlym patents. A judge ruled for Teva last year, and Corcept has appealed.
