Mamdani smiles in pic with Uganda bigwig who pushed law to jail gays for life

Mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani flashed a beaming smile in a cringeworthy photo with a top Ugandan official who pushed harsh anti-LGBT policies — that included life imprisonment for gay people.

Mamdani met with Rebecca Kadaga in July during a break from the campaign trail — after winning the Democratic primary — that included a lavish celebration of his recent nuptials at a secluded Ugandan compound owned by his family.

“Delighted to meet with Zohran Mamdhani (sic), incoming Mayor of New York City. Good luck in the next phase of elections,” Kadaga said in a caption of a photo of her with a grinning Mamdani.

“Here with Zohran Mamdhani and Prof Mamdhani as Zohran returns to New York after his traditional wedding in Kampala,” she gushed in another photo of her, Mamdani and his father, Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani.

The Mamdani campaign was left scrambling Sunday as photos of the meeting re-emerged, as a spokesperson claimed the democratic socialist candidate was “unaware” of Kadaga’s widely reported status as an anti-gay crusader.

In 2012, then-Speaker Kadaga infamously said she was passing a draconian law imposing severe penalties against practicing homosexuals as a “Christmas gift” for supporters of the measure.

“Ugandans want that law as a Christmas gift. They have asked for it and we’ll give them that gift,” Kadaga said then.

Then-President Barack Obama called the legislation “odious.”

Kadaha has been the first deputy prime minister since 2021, following a 10-year stint as the powerful parliament speaker.

In 2024, the Ugandan government passed a law that further criminalizes LGBT people.

The Anti-Homosexuality Act criminalized consensual same-sex conduct with penalties of up to life imprisonment, attempted homosexual acts with penalties of 14 years in prison for first time offenses.

The initial draft called for the death penalty for those convicted of “aggravated homosexuality,” which includes repeated same sex acts and intercourse with a person younger than 18, older than 75, or a person with a disability.

But capital punishment was removed from the legislation following international criticism in favor of life imprisonment.

The parliament passed a similar anti-LGBT law in 2013 when Kadaga was the speaker. It was struck down in court because the parliament lacked a quorum during the vote to pass it.

Mamdani’s camp said it didn’t know Kadaga was the “architect” of Uganda’s vicious anti-LGBT law.

“Zohran Mamdani ran into the First Deputy Minister while he was at Entebbe airport waiting to board his flight back to New York City. She asked to take a photo,” said Mamdani campaign spokesperson Dora Pekec.

“If he was aware she was the architect of this horrific attack on queer Ugandans, he would not have done so,” Pekec went on. “Zohran’s belief in universal human rights extends to all people, and he has put forward the most comprehensive plan of any candidate to protect LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.

“As Mayor, he will continue his record of action and values to make this a city where trans New Yorkers are cherished, our queer neighbors are celebrated, and each and every New Yorker can be the fullest version of themselves.”

Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who’s running for mayor as an independent against Mamdani, blasted his rival for the awkward photo — and tore into him for the explanation.

“And as we’ve learned, if he’s smiling, he’s lying,” said Cuomo, who as governor approved the state’s gay marriage law and other pro-LGBT legislation.

He noted the photo was taken around the time of a mass shooting on Park Avenue in Manhattan that resulted in the death of an NYPD officer.

“Mamdani now claims he didn’t know who she was. That is laughable,” Cuomo went on. “Kadaga’s crusade against Uganda’s LGBTQ community has been condemned around the world for well over a decade. Any serious public official, particularly one from Uganda, would know exactly who she is.”

Cuomo asked how a self-proclaimed progressive candidate for New York City — the birthplace of the Stonewall gay civil rights movement —  found himself “smiling beside one of the most notorious anti-LGBTQ figures on the planet?”

And, he added, “how does he maintain dual citizenship in a country that criminalizes people simply for who they love?”

“New Yorkers deserve a mayor who stands on principle – not one who hides behind excuses. Zohran Mamdani has shown one quality time and again: duplicity,” Cuomo said.

Some gay activists expressed outrage that Mamdani warmly greeted a gay hater.

Chris Lynn, a co-founder of the Stonewall Democratic Club, the city’s first citywide LGBT club, wasn’t buying Mamdani’s explanation that he didn’t know who Kadaga was.

“He’s either a liar or incredibly ill-informed. Oh, come on! No one thinks he’s that ill-informed,” Lynn said.

Other gay activists defended Mamdani, saying he’s been a staunch advocate of the LGBT community as a state Assembly member.

“I know Zohran. I take Zohran at his word,” said Allen Roskoff, head of the citywide Jim Owles LIberal LGBT Democratic Club.

“Zohran has been a friend to the LGBT community. Zohran has supported every pro-LGBT piece of legislation and has been one of our most articulate spokesmen in the state legislature,” he said.

Ugandan authorities have perpetrated widespread discrimination and violence against LGBT residents and supporters in the two years since the Anti-Homosexuality Act was approved, the civil rights group Human Rights Watch said in a scathing report released in May.

“For the last two years, LGBT Ugandans have suffered a range of abuses because of the government’s willful decision to legislate hate against them,” said Oryem Nyeko, senior Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch.

Ugandan officials have spread public misinformation and hatred against LGBT people, leading to an uptick in attacks and harassment against LGBT residents and rights groups, the report said.

“The timing of the meeting with Kadaga, a seasoned politician with a history of high-profile roles including Speaker of Parliament, suggests an effort to strengthen transatlantic ties or garner support ahead of Zohran’s mayoral bid,” the group watchdoguganda.com said.

“For Uganda, Zohran’s visits and family ties symbolize a bridge between East African heritage and Western politics, potentially influencing diaspora engagement. ….As Zohran campaigns in New York, his Ugandan roots and elite connections may bolster his narrative of cultural richness—or expose contradictions in his political ethos,” the group said.

Mamdani is facing Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in the general election on Nov. 4 after having beat Cuomo and several other candidates in a crowded ranked-choice Democratic Party primary in June.

Current Mayor Eric Adams dropped out of the primary then ran a campaign as an independent that he ended last month among dismal polling numbers and deflating donations.

Driver slams into ICE vehicle in Chicago amid string of attacks

Shocking video captured the moment an unhinged driver rammed into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement vehicle in Chicago amid a spate of attacks on federal agents.

The chaotic scene unfolded when the black SUV was caught on camera suddenly plowing into the back of the ICE truck in the middle of heavy traffic on Saturday, the Department of Homeland Security said.

The driver then chased the ICE vehicle before repeatedly slamming into its bumper in front of shocked bystanders.

Scores of federal agents could be seen drawing their guns in a bid to prevent the driver from fleeing.

It wasn’t immediately clear if the driver was apprehended.

The assault came soon after Border Patrol agents shot a gun-toting woman elsewhere in the city when an angry mob of anti-ICE protesters ambushed federal agents and boxed them in with 10 vehicles.

The woman, Marimar Martinez, as well as another driver, Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, were both arrested and branded “domestic terrorists.”

“The scene became increasingly violent as more domestic terrorists gathered and began throwing smoke, gas, rocks, and bottles at DHS law enforcement,” DHS said.

Several Border Patrol agents were injured as the violent scenes unfolded, according to authorities.

“These attacks on our brave law enforcement officers must END,” DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has since deployed special operations teams to the city.

“Secretary Noem has taken action to deploy additional resources to restore law and order. We will not allow domestic terrorists to attack our law enforcement,” McLaughlin said.

“If you lay a hand on law enforcement, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

Hidden cost to Dem benefits for migrants as government shutdown continues

As the government shutdown continues, the media seem fixated on one Republican talking point: that the Democrats want health care benefits for illegal immigrants. Of course they do.

Part of the way Democrats try to claim otherwise is semantics.

For example, President Joe Biden ballooned the number of illegal immigrants with Temporary Protected Status from 400,000 to 1.2 million during his term. TPS holders have no legal right to live here, but the government has promised not to deport them until their home country resolves what is supposed to be a major destabilizing condition — a natural disaster, for example, although past administrations have tended to grant and renew TPS for far less.

Similarly, Biden allowed 2.9 million inadmissible migrants to enter the US via “parole,” which, like TPS, gives them a fixed time period to stay before facing removal.

Because these migrants are still considered inadmissible and removable, and their deferred status is temporary, the Department of Homeland Security and outside experts continue to count them as illegal immigrants.

Prior to passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, parolees could access Medicaid after a five-year waiting period, just as legal permanent residents can, and they could also qualify for Obamacare subsidies after one year. TPS holders for their part could access Obamacare subsidies.

Welfare workarounds

The OBBB sunsets all of these privileges, but the Democrats’ proposed budget would restore them. Therefore, the claim that congressional Democrats want to give public health benefits to illegal immigrants is indeed true.

That dispute is minor, however, compared to the broader reality that illegal immigrants already consume public health benefits through other pathways. Perhaps the most obvious is emergency Medicaid. Illegal immigrants who show up in emergency rooms, including expectant mothers, will generally have their health care expenses covered by federal taxpayers.

Another avenue is state-level programs. California, Illinois and New York are among the approximately 14 states that fund coverage for illegal immigrant children. Some states even provide adult illegal immigrants with health benefits.

The Center for Immigration Studies has found that 59% of households headed by an illegal immigrant consume at least one means-tested benefit, with 39% consuming Medicaid specifically.

Some additional restrictions could help reduce the public health benefits that illegal immigrants receive. Indeed, the House version of the OBBB would have penalized states that offered benefits to illegal immigrants, but this provision was dropped by the Senate.

Enforcement

Still, no set of restrictions can block all such welfare usage. Hospitals will always help people in emergencies, regardless of their immigration status, and the citizen children of illegal immigrants will always be eligible for welfare as long as we have a welfare state.

The ultimate solution to illegal immigrants consuming Medicaid or any other type of welfare is simply to reduce the size of the illegal immigrant population. Fortunately, the Trump administration has shown that controlling the border and deporting people with removal orders is indeed possible. It is those enforcement policies — not simply restrictions on program access — that will ultimately save taxpayers.

Weiss to lead CBS after Paramount deal

Paramount has named former New York Times opinion writer Bari Weiss to lead CBS News, in the latest move by new owners to reshape operations of one of America's leading news organisations.

Paramount is also buying The Free Press, the digital outlet Weiss started after her acrimonious departure from the New York Times, in a deal reported to be worth $150m (£112m).

Ms Weiss, who has criticised broadcast media for becoming too partisan, said she was excited to put her stamp on CBS, which was taken over by David Ellison earlier this year as part of a wider merger with Paramount.

The deal has drawn scrutiny on the left because Mr Ellison is the son of tech billionaire and Trump ally Larry Ellison.

Ms Weiss, who started her career working at Jewish news outlets, is known for her support of Israel and her criticism of "cancel culture".

Since its start as a newsletter in 2021, The Free Press has attracted 1.5 million subscribers, including more than 170,000 paid subscribers.

It has drawn attention for reports such as a piece critical of NPR by one of its former business editors, Uri Berliner, as well as an investigation of some photos used by mainstream news outlets to illustrate famine in Gaza, which said many of those featured suffered other health conditions.

Big name contributors include historian Niall Ferguson and economist Tyler Cowen.

Mr Ellison said the appointment was part of a bigger effort to modernise content at Paramount and make CBS the "most-trusted name in news".

"We believe the majority of the country longs for news that is balanced and fact-based, and we want CBS to be their home," he said.

More change at CBS

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Paramount declined to comment on the reports that the firm had paid $150m in stock and cash.

Mr Ellison made his name as a Hollywood film producer of blockbusters such as Top Gun Maverick, True Grit and World War Z.

He has said his aim is to produce coverage that is less politically skewed, and therefore has the ability to reach all audiences.

His takeover of Paramount was approved by the Trump administration this summer, after the company agreed to pay $16m to settle a lawsuit brought by Trump over a 60 Minutes interview with his 2024 presidential rival Kamala Harris he said was deceptively edited to benefit Democrats.

To win approval of the deal, Mr Ellison agreed to install an independent ombudsman at CBS to review complaints of bias and committed to regulators that programming would reflect a diversity of view points.

He also said CBS's long-running political show "Face the Nation" would no longer air edited interviews.

CBS News has a partnership agreement with the BBC, meaning news content including video footage can be shared. BBC News is editorially independent of CBS.

In a note announcing the deal, Ms Weiss said she believed in the Paramount boss and his leadership team.

"They are doubling down because they believe in news. Because they have courage. Because they love this country. And because they understand, as we do, that America cannot thrive without common facts, common truths, and a common reality," she wrote.

AMD Soars Most In Nearly A Decade On OpenAI Chip Deal; Semiconductor Index Hits Record High

 Update (1005ET):

At the cash open, AMD shares jumped as much as 38% to new record highs following news of the OpenAI deal (see previous update for details). In fact, this intraday surge so far marks the largest share gain in nearly a decade, or about 9.5 years, dating back to the 52.3% gain on April 22, 2016.

 Record high.

Goldman analyst Peter Callahan says today is all about ...

The deal between AMD and OpenAI sent the Philadelphia Stock Exchange Semiconductor Index up 4%, reaching a new all-time high.

Totally not a bubble...

The epic "circle jerk" continues (read how this works at the end of the note )...

Shares of Advanced Micro Devices surged in premarket trading after the company announced a multi-year partnership with OpenAI to roll out next-generation AI infrastructure. The first 1-gigawatt deployment of AMD Instinct MI450 GPUs is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.

AMD and OpenAI have signed a definitive agreement establishing AMD as a core compute partner for OpenAI.

Well, that solves it. Won't be Intel...

The partnership begins with the Instinct MI450 series and rack-scale AI solutions designed for data centers that power OpenAI's chatbots.

Here's the structure of the deal:

  • Equity component: AMD granted OpenAI a warrant for up to 160 million AMD shares, vesting with deployment and performance milestones tied to capacity expansion (1 GW → 6 GW), AMD share-price thresholds, and OpenAI rollout goals.

AMD CFO Jean Hu said in a statement, "Our partnership with OpenAI is expected to deliver tens of billions of dollars in revenue for AMD while accelerating OpenAI's AI infrastructure buildout," adding, "This agreement creates significant strategic alignment and shareholder value for both AMD and OpenAI and is expected to be highly accretive to AMD's non-GAAP earnings-per-share."

"This partnership is a major step in building the compute capacity needed to realize AI's full potential," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated. He noted, "AMD's leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster."

AMD shares in New York jumped as much as 25%.

What this also means is that despite the now explicit backing (and investment) of the White House, Intel failed to win this deal which makes it clear who the real Alphas are in the chip space. Surprisingly, in a sign of brief market rationality, NVDA stock is actually lower this morning (we doubt it lasts) as AMD takes away tens if not hundreds of billions in future chip revenue from the world's largest company.

If AMD gains hold above 23.8% (April 9, 2025) through the end of the cash session, this would mark the largest daily increase since the 52.3% jump on April 22, 2016.
