House Probes 'Discriminatory' South Korean Regulators After Trump Hits Seoul With 25% Tariff

The House Judiciary Committee has opened a formal investigation into whether South Korean regulators are unfairly targeting American technology companies, as the two allies with a long history of economic and security cooperation find themselves embroiled in a heated dispute over trade, technology, and regulatory oversight - with government accusing the other of unfair practices.

Last October we highlighted that South Korea has effectively been extracting money from US tech firms in the form of fines and other punitive measures via the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC). While the commission's stated goal is to enforce antitrust laws, they've essentially morphed into bridge trolls, according to US officials.

In 2016, Qualcomm was hit with an $854 million penalty for what it called unfair business practices. In 2021, Google was hit with a $177 million fine for dominating the Android OS market. Apple, Meta and others have been similarly hit stemming from issues like in-app payment restrictions, proprietary algorithms, and alleged anti-competitive practices.

While Washington DC has allowed Seoul to pursue enforcement actions under the longstanding US - Korea alliance, the KFTC has morphed into an aggressive, often unpredictable enforcer whose investigations and fines have disproportionately targeted foreign market leaders.

According to one analysis, punitive fines from the KFTC are set to cause a combined $1 trillion in economic losses over the next decade ($525 billion for the U.S. and $469 billion for South Korea), as tighter controls on global tech firms present a "discriminatory" risk that could chill innovation and foreign investment.

Trump Takes a Swing

Following an October trip to Seoul by President Trump, it looked like the KFTC was willing to back off - only for things to go sideways less than two months later, resulting in the Trump administration canceling a key bilateral trade meeting.

Trump publicly accused South Korea last week of "not living up" to the terms of the October agreement, before slapping a new 25% tariff on Korean imports to the United States - blindsiding South Korean officials and sending ripples throughout the business community. South Korea notaly imported around $123 billion of goods to the US last year, making it the second largest export market after China.

Now, the House Judiciary Committee is on the case - launching an investigation into the KFTC, and have subpoenaed American e-commerce giant Coupang for documents and testimony, after the KFTC threatened massive penalties in the wake of a November 2025 breach, which exposed personal data of over 33 million customers (later expanded to include 165,000 more), attributed to a Chinese hacker but compounded by Coupang's alleged inadequate cybersecurity and delayed detection. Coupang has faced over $100 million in previous fines over alleged search engine manipulation and unfair business practices. According to the lawmakers, obtaining records from Coupang will help Congress assess whether foreign regulatory policies and enforcement practices are affecting Americans’ due-process rights and the ability of U.S. companies to compete in global markets.

Coupang has vowed to fully cooperate, "including submitting the documents requested in the subpoena and having witnesses appear."

In a letter dated Feb. 5, Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), and Subcommittee Chairman Scott Fitzgerald (R-WI) said the probe will examine whether foreign laws and enforcement actions are being used to discriminate against U.S. firms and undermine their ability to compete globally.

Coupang, which is listed on the New York Stock Exchange, has become a focal point for U.S. officials, lawmakers and investors who argue that Seoul’s regulatory approach warrants closer scrutiny. In a statement to FOX Business, a spokesperson for the company said it would “fully cooperate with the U.S. House Judiciary Committee investigation, including production of documents and witness testimony as required by the subpoena.”

The committee said it is conducting oversight into “how and to what extent foreign laws, regulations, and judicial orders are being used to discriminate against innovative American companies and infringe on the rights of U.S. citizens.” As part of that effort, the subpoena seeks communications between Coupang and South Korean authorities, along with testimony from company representatives.

According to the letter, the KFTC has subjected U.S. firms to “punitive obligations, excessive fines, and discriminatory enforcement practices." The letter also referenced recent regulatory actions involving Coupang, including scrutiny and potential penalties tied to a data-related incident, which the committee said exemplify broader concerns about how American-owned companies are treated under South Korean enforcement.

The investigation, they said, is intended to inform potential legislation aimed at protecting U.S. companies and citizens from what Congress describes as discriminatory foreign regulations and enforcement decisions.

HIMS Shares Sink After FDA Vows "Swift Action" Against Copycat GLP-1 Drugs

Hims & Hers Health's $49-a-month copycat GLP-1 pill, priced far below Novo Nordisk's $149-a-month Wegovy pill, can be seen as part of a "GLP-1 price war" between the telehealth company and Big Pharma giant.

It appears that HIMS' strategy has been an access-and-pricing arbitrage play: mass-market a copycat GLP-1 first, then address any regulatory fallout later.

In pure 'FAFO' fashion, HIMS is finding out very fast: hours after Thursday's press release touting its new GLP-1 pill for $49 per month to take on Wegovy, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary wrote on X that his agency will take "swift action against companies mass-marketing illegal copycat drugs, claiming they are similar to FDA-approved products."

Makary noted, "The FDA cannot verify the quality, safety, or effectiveness of non-approved drugs."

For context, last June, Novo terminated its partnership, citing the telehealth company's "illegal mass compounding and deceptive marketing."

On Tuesday, Novo reported a disappointing full-year outlook, warning of a tough year in the GLP-1 market. Besides HIMS, the company faces competition from Eli Lilly's Zepbound, gaining ever-larger market share in the U.S.

Makary's comments on X sent HIMS shares down about 7.5% in premarket trading in New York. Shares of Novo in Europe are up about 4.5%.

HIMS bubble unwinds...

We must also note that Makary's swift comments about copycat GLP-1 drugs were likely a nudge from Novo, as shares have been obliterated this week.

Goldman's Novo superbull James Quigley stated earlier this week, "FY26 is a reset year with respect to the pricing aspect of the GLP-1 market."

Greece and Israel Move to Build ‘Achilles Shield’ Defense Network

Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said Greece and Israel are responding to shared regional challenges in the Eastern Mediterranean without seeking to exclude Türkiye, stressing that keeping constructive dialogue channels open with Ankara is important for regional cooperation.

‘Not an Alliance Against Anyone’

Speaking at a panel hosted by the Foundation for Defense of Democracies during the Delphi Economic Forum Washington DC VII, Dendias emphasized that existing regional frameworks are not designed to counter any single country.

“I always underline one important point: this is not an understanding against anybody,” Dendias said, referring to the “three plus one” cooperation format involving the United States, Greece, Israel, and Cyprus. “It is not a ‘three plus one’ against a fourth party, whether that is Türkiye or someone else.”

He added that the U.S. commitment to the format reflects Washington’s long-term strategic assessment of stability and cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Conditions for Türkiye’s Participation

Dendias said Türkiye could become part of trilateral or multilateral cooperation efforts if it aligns itself with international maritime norms, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

“If Türkiye accepts the treaty and its rules, then we can all work together,” he said, adding that Greece continues to support dialogue and open communication channels with Ankara.

Defense Cooperation and ‘Achilles Shield’

The Greek minister also outlined Greece’s “Agenda 2030” defense modernization plan, highlighting deepening cooperation with Israel, particularly in innovation and artificial intelligence.

Central to this cooperation is Greece’s planned integrated air and missile defense system, known as “Achilles Shield.” Dendias described it as broader in scope than existing systems such as Israel’s Iron Dome.

“Achilles Shield is a much more holistic approach than anything that exists,” he said, noting that it addresses threats from space, cyberspace, air, sea, and ballistic and cruise missiles.

Dendias stressed that Greece aims to co-produce at least half of the system domestically while acquiring technological expertise through collaboration with Israel’s innovation ecosystem.

Relations With Türkiye and Regional Divergence

Dendias rejected claims of hostility toward Türkiye, noting that Israel and Türkiye once enjoyed close relations and that Ankara has never been an inherent enemy of Greece.

“I am not in any way anti-Turk, and I do not believe Israel is anti-Turk at all,” he said, pointing instead to political and strategic differences that have emerged in recent years.

He urged the United States to clarify its long-term vision for the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, suggesting that Washington should weigh differing regional outlooks when shaping its policies.

Acknowledging Türkiye’s Regional Influence

Dendias also acknowledged Türkiye’s expanding geopolitical footprint, citing its growing presence in Libya and across Africa.

“Türkiye has been extremely successful in the last few years,” he said, referencing Ankara’s military presence in western Libya and its increasing engagement with eastern Libya and sub-Saharan Africa.

He added that during his tenure as foreign minister, Türkiye’s influence across the continent was evident, often coinciding with Turkish President Recep Tayyip ErdoÄŸan’s visits to the region.

Ilhan Omar's Winery Exposed As Fake Shell For Alleged Money Laundering

 by Steve Watson via Modernity.news,

A damning on-site investigation has revealed that the winery co-owned by Ilhan Omar’s husband is nothing more than a phantom operation, fueling suspicions of fraud amid scrutiny of her skyrocketing wealth.

Angela Rose, the journalist behind the probe, visited the listed address in Santa Rosa, California, only to discover glaring discrepancies that point to a shell company setup.

“I visited the principal address of ESTCRU winery. This winery is co owned by US Rep of Minnesota Ilhan Omar’s husband, Timothy Mynett, yet seems to allegedly be a shell business used to launder funds,” Rose stated in her report.

She detailed the revenue surge: “In 2024 they made about $15,000 and in 2025 it exploded to up to $5 million dollars… yet they weren’t producing any wine.”

Rose highlighted the lack of legitimacy: “No business license exists for ESTRCRU (Ilhan Omar’s Winery) at this address. The other wineries here are properly licensed.”

The address, 1160 Hopper Ave Apt B in Santa Rosa, houses over 40 wineries, but the location owner confirmed ESTCRU isn’t among them. Public records show it’s tied to a foreign processing center with no actual business license for ESTCRU.

This bombshell comes as Omar’s finances face intense federal scrutiny. Her 2024 financial disclosure reported assets between $6 million and $30 million, a massive leap from the $40,000 to $250,000 in 2023. The bulk ties to her husband’s winery and a venture capital firm.

The Justice Department launched an investigation into Omar’s finances, campaign spending, and foreign interactions in June 2024 under the Biden administration. Though it reportedly stalled due to lack of evidence, President Trump has revived the push, vowing to expose any impropriety.

Trump highlighted the probe, noting Omar arrived from Somalia with little and now boasts family wealth up to $30 million, amid broader Minnesota fraud inquiries.

Last week Omar was accused of staging an “attack” at a town hall, where she was sprayed with apple cider vinegar by a man acting strangely, in order to divert attention from her wealth investigations.

Comedy Writer Testifies Before US Congress On UK’s CHILLING Free Speech CRACKDOWN

 by Steve Watson

Graham Linehan, the Irish comedy writer, testified before the US House Judiciary Committee, detailing how Britain’s authorities hounded him over online posts challenging trans ideology—exposing the chilling grip of censorship under Keir Starmer’s government.

His appearance underscores America’s growing scrutiny of Europe’s speech-stifling laws, with Linehan urging lawmakers to push back against policies that silence women and crush free expression.

The hearing, titled “Europe’s Threat to American Speech and Innovation,” examined how regulations like the EU’s Digital Services Act and the UK’s Online Safety Act enable government overreach, forcing platforms to censor content globally and punishing dissenters. Chaired by Rep. Jim Jordan, it highlighted arrests for online speech, including Linehan’s own ordeal, as threats spilling over to US shores.

Linehan opened his testimony by recounting his shift from comedy to activism. “I spent 30 years writing comedy for British television. It was a career that I loved but it ended when I began noticing that women were losing their livelihoods, their social circles and even their freedom for defending rights won over 100 years ago by the suffragette movement,” he said.

He explained his views aligned with those facing backlash: “They believed as I do that single sex spaces are essential for women’s privacy, dignity and safety. They believed that children should not undergo experimental medical treatment that ravages their health and shortens their lives. They believe women have a right to fair sport.”

These stances, Linehan testified, made him a target. “For holding them I became the target of a series of harassment campaigns that cost me my career, my marriage and eventually drawn from my homeland.”

He detailed police involvement: “For a decade the British police have harassed me for expressing views that I don’t think in ten years not one person—not the police who arrested me and not the colleagues who condemned me or friends who turned away—has told any of us what we did wrong.”

Linehan stressed the ideological clash: “I want everyone to understand that gender ideology and free speech cannot coexist. You can hear the lie in the very language: trans woman meaning man, man meaning woman, health care opposite of health care. Men’s demands, ideology that tells lesbians they are bigoted for not accepting male partners is not progressive—it is homophobic.”

Bringing it stateside, he cited a US case: “Right now a man named Hobby Bingham who calls himself Princess Zoe Andromeda Love is a registered sex offender in this country. He raped a 12 year old girl, was transferred to the Washington Corrections centre where he raped a developmentally disabled female inmate. This is not happening in Britain—it’s here.”

Linehan called for action: “First, use every diplomatic lever you have to pressure the British government to implement its own Supreme Court ruling… Women just won a landmark case confirming that sex means biological sex… Please make sure to make it clear that America is watching.”

He continued, “Second, put pressure on the Irish government to reopen the conversation it never had in 2015… The Gender Recognition Act was quietly passed—no public consultation, referendum, no women’s rights organizations consulted.”

“Third, recognize free speech is not preserved simply by declining to arrest people,” Linehan urged, adding “We need new whistleblower protections for the digital age. If government will not defend dissenters from institutional retaliation and mob rule then what is the First Amendment for?”

This testimony stems from Linehan’s September 2025 arrest at Heathrow, where five armed officers detained him over three gender-critical tweets posted from the US.

The incident spiked his blood pressure to stroke levels, landing him in hospital amid what he called a “persistent harassment campaign” by trans activists and police.

The testimony arrives amid escalating revelations about Britain’s free speech erosion. As we previously highlighted, some 10,000 arrests were made in 2024 for “grossly offensive” social media posts—30 per day—under vague communications laws, outpacing even Russia’s crackdown while real crimes like knife attacks and burglaries fester unsolved.

As we have also detailed, the Trump administration has offered asylum to UK “thought criminals,” including gender-critical activists.

Sources indicated the White House eyed protections for those prosecuted over silent protests or online dissent, influenced by Elon Musk’s highlighting of such cases.
