South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on Tuesday that a white phosphorus leak was reported inside a major US military airbase in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province.
According to fire and police authorities, emergency services received an initial report of "suspected chemical leakage from a warhead" within the Osan Air Base (K-55) premises in Seotan-myeon, Pyeongtaek.
Authorities issued emergency disaster text alerts to nearby residents instructing them to evacuate to a safe location and to avoid any skin contact with the substance. White phosphorus ignites spontaneously on contact with air, produces dense white smoke, causes severe burns upon skin exposure, and can prove fatal if the smoke is heavily inhaled.
