'Ukraine says Iran has no standing to portray itself as victim'

Iran has no standing to portray itself as a victim after supplying Russia with weapons used in the war against Ukraine, Ukrainian Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said on Monday.

"Iran's threats are unjustified and groundless," Sybiha wrote on X. "The regime in Tehran is a direct accomplice to Russian aggression against Ukraine, fuelling Moscow's criminal war with weapons that have killed Ukrainians since 2022."

Sybiha rejected what he called Tehran's attempts to justify its position by invoking the UN Charter.

"Iran has no standing to pretend to be a victim, let alone justify its threats with absurd references to the UN Charter," he wrote.

He also accused Iran of trying to divert attention from Russian attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea, saying the issue would be discussed at an emergency UN Security Council meeting.

"Russia's attacks on freedom of navigation will be at the spotlight of today's emergency UN Security Council meeting and we expect strong responses by the international community," Sybiha wrote.
