The presence of Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces personnel in Iran could be intended as preparation for a possible ground war between Iran and the United States, a commander in the organization told Iran International on Monday.
“The presence of the organization’s official forces in Iran could be aimed at preparing for a possible ground war between Iran and the United States,” the commander said in an exclusive interview.
The commander confirmed Iran International’s reports that several Iraqi fighters affiliated with the Popular Mobilization Forces, also known as Hashd al-Shaabi, were in Iran, describing their presence under the current circumstances as “completely natural.”
He said the fighters had not been deployed “as part of the official Hashd al-Shaabi organization.” Instead, they were stationed in southern Iran “for religious and ideological reasons and in support of the Islamic Republic.”
“The presence of these militia members in Iran follows the same logic under which some of them previously considered themselves obligated to stand alongside the Houthis and support the group,” he said.
Referring to the Iran-backed group in Yemen, the commander said Tehran’s support could soon be sharply reduced.
“It appears that the issue of the Houthis is nearing its end, and Iran will probably largely end its support for the Houthis in the coming days,” he said.
“Whether under the name of the Hashd al-Shaabi organization or any other name, if Iran, particularly the Revolutionary Guards, asks Iraqis who are ideologically loyal to Iran, many people will be sent for this purpose,” he added.
