Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs said his government is seeking €7 billion from the European Union to make up for its security expenses driven by the war in Ukraine, according to a Politico interview published on Monday. The funds would cover around one-half of its defense spending in its seven-year budget.
"We are getting our budget deficit to the maximum," Kulbergs told the outlet, claiming that it is using the debt to help protect the rest of the EU. He also argued that Latvia "fuels" the economies of other member states when it orders weapons and military equipment from them.
