Need quick medical advice in Britain? Ask Alexa

Britain’s state-run health service is teaming up with Amazon to provide medical advice for common ailments such as migraines and flu via the tech giant’s voice assistant Alexa, aiming to help more patients at home and cut down on costs.
The plan is to give patients – especially the elderly, blind and those unable to access the internet through traditional means – access to information verified by the National Health Service (NHS) by using voice commands, the government said.
The deal could ease pressure on the NHS by reducing the need to visit a doctor.
However, there are concerns that older people, who are used to telephonic or personal interactions, might find it hard to adapt to newer technologies for healthcare services.
Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said smart devices could help older people access routine health information and advice, especially if there was support available to help them learn how to use them.
“Older people still have traditional ways of getting the right information and advice, such as face to face and telephone support,” Abrahams said. Five million people aged 65 and over have never used the internet, she added.

The deal marks the latest move by Amazon into healthcare following its purchase of online pharmacy PillPack last year, and a tie-up with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase & Co aimed at cutting health costs for hundreds of thousands of their U.S. employees.
British Health Secretary Matt Hancock said millions of people were already asking Alexa and other voice assistants about health matters, and he wanted to make sure they received the very best advice in response.
He said the service would be backed by strong privacy rules to protect patient confidentiality.
“There is a clear protocol in place that Amazon has and that we have in the NHS,” he told BBC radio.
The NHS is a cherished institution for many Britons, providing services from routine consultations to life-saving operations. But it is under growing financial pressure in the face of increasing patient demands and budget constraints.
A general practitioner (GP), often referred to as a “family doctor”, is usually the first port of call for a person feeling unwell in Britain.

Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said voice-assisted technology could free up more doctors’ appointments for patients who need them most.
“It has the potential to help some patients work out what kind of care they need before considering whether to seek face-to-face medical help, especially for minor ailments that rarely need a GP appointment,” she said.
“But we must be careful not to create a ‘digital divide’ between those patients who can afford it and are able to use it, and those who can’t.”
Amazon’s Alexa-enabled devices such as Echo and Echo Dot range in price from about 50 pounds ($62) to more than 200 pounds.
The U.S. company’s algorithm uses information from the NHS website to provide answers to voice questions such as “Alexa, how do I treat a migraine?” or “Alexa, what are the symptoms of chickenpox”.
Technology, led by artificial intelligence (AI) and big data, is increasingly being deployed in healthcare.
London-based Babylon Health says its AI technology has outperformed most physicians in tests in assessing disease symptoms.
Chatbot Florence, named after Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, allows patients to monitor health and wellness indicators via Kik, Skype and Facebook Messenger.
In India, Practo, founded in 2008, acts as a one-stop shop for patients booking appointments with doctors for online and face-to-face consultations.

Tower Health welcomes Hahnemann hospital residents, fellows

Berks County-based Tower Health is coming to the aid of medical residents and fellows impacted by the closing of Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.
Hahnemann announced Wednesday plans to transfer the majority of the residency and fellowship programs at Hahnemann and Drexel University to Tower Health, which is headquartered in West Reading.
Under a letter of intent, Tower Health will assume responsibility for the continued training of residents and fellows, while giving those physicians the right to be placed in one of Tower Health’s six hospitals — Reading, Brandywine, Chestnut Hill, Jennersville, Phonexiville or Pottstown.
“We welcome the residents and fellows to Tower Health and look forward to working with them,” said Clint Matthews, Tower Health’s president and CEO. “We are committed to our academic affiliation with Drexel University and providing a high-quality training program for residents and fellows.”
Tower Health’s partnership with Drexel already includes a four-year medical school campus that is currently under construction in Wyomissing. Ground was broken on June 17. It’s expected to open to 200 students at the start of the 2021-2022 school year.
“This is a natural next step in the growing relationship between Tower Health and Drexel University, which includes our recently announced 20-year academic affiliation and the initiative to explore combining the Tower Health Medical Group and Drexel University Physicians practices,” said John Fry, the president of Drexel University.
Tower Health posted on its website Wednesday that it will hold a series of open houses for Hahnemann University Hospital residents at Reading Hospital on Thursday and Saturday and at Chestnut Hill Hospital on Friday. Those interested in attending an open house and register on Tower Health’s website.
“Additionally, we want to make this transition as easy as possible for residents and will provide a number of benefits, including free onsite housing for physicians training at Reading Hospital, free meals while in any Tower Health hospital, and other amenities to assist them and their families,” Matthews said.
Tower Health said it will also provide housing support and job placement assistance for spouses and significant others.
As for Hahnemann, its parent company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June. The 495-bed hospital said it would close in September, but it has already curtailed some of its services, including its trauma center. All non-emergency surgeries and procedures are set to end on Friday.
The letter of intent has been submitted to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for approval. The proposed transfer is scheduled to be competed by August 1.

Biohaven +2.9% on positive migraine medicine data

Biohaven (NYSE:BHVN) is up 2.9% postmarket after reporting that its migraine medicine rimegepant registered a meaningfully positive outcome in a Phase 3 trial.
Rimegepant is a small molecule calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor antagonist for acute treatment of migraine.
Compared to a placebo, patients treated with one 75 mg dose “experienced superior, rapid pain freedom and freedom from the most bothersome migraine-associated symptom,” the company says.

Dynavax up 15% after hours on bullish Cantor rating

Dynavax Technologies (NASDAQ:DVAX) is up 15% after hours on light volume after Cantor Fitzgerald resumed coverage with an Overweight rating and $20 (425% upside) price target.
The company recently restructured, cutting 37% of its workforce and divesting its immuno-oncology programs, in order to focus its resources on hepatitis B vaccine HEPLISAV-B.
Shares are down almost 70% since early January.
Quant rating is Very Bearish and SA Authors rating is Neutral.

Neurocrine: FDA Accepts Application for Adjunctive Parkinson’s Treatment

Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc.
