Zelensky told to make up with Trump as Italian PM Giorgia Meloni warns of a ‘divided West’

Italian leader Giorgia Meloni has called for Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky to get back to the negotiating table to “avoid the risk that the West divides over Ukraine,” after the Ukrainian President was booted from the White House following a fiery shouting match with the president and Vice President JD Vance.

Zelensky huddled with key European allies for an emergency summit on Sunday. He was given a hero’s welcome in London as leaders discussed a path for peace amid Russia’s invasion and how to patch things up with the US after the clash Friday.

Some European leaders have publicly pushed for Trump and Zelensky to mend fences.

“It’s very, very important that we avoid the risk that the West divides over Ukraine,” Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has courted close ties with Trump, said, per a translation.

Meloni, the sole European leader to attend Trump’s inauguration, spoke with Trump on the phone ahead of the London security summit and publicly called for an emergency meeting with the US to smooth things over.

“It is important to maintain unity around Ukraine and strengthen our country’s position in cooperation with our allies – the countries of Europe and the United States,” Zelensky said following his meeting with Meloni.

“Ukraine needs peace backed by robust security guarantees.”

“Clearly, there’s a lot of tension. The cameras were on — nobody wants to see that. My driving purpose has been to bridge this,” British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who spoke with Trump after the spat, told the BBC.

“We’ve now agreed that the United Kingdom, along with France and possibly one or two others, will work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting, and then we’ll discuss that plan with the United States.”

Later in the day, Zelensky is poised to meet with King Charles.

European leaders have been rallying around Zelensky, while many of them have carefully refrained from being too adversarial toward Trump following the explosive encounter in the Oval Office on Friday.

Since Friday, Zelensky has blasted out a blitz of thank yous to European countries and other partners for their assistance after getting beraded by Vance for not expressing more gratitude toward the US.

He’s also turned to Europe’s guidance amid bitterly strained relations with the US, which has been Ukraine’s largest foreign provider of lethal military aid.

“Those European leaders are talking to him directly about getting to the negotiation table,” national security adviser Mike Waltz reflected to CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “[About] what does he need to see to actually negotiate and negotiate with the Russians.”

“What was so stunning to all of us in the Oval Office was that it was not clear Zelensky was going to go to negotiate at all.”

Zelensky had arrived at the White House on Friday, expected to sign a mineral rights agreement with the US as part of the Trump administration’s push to get negotiations going to end the war in Ukraine.

But Zelensky pushed back on a number of assertions from Trump and Vance during their sit-down in the Oval Office in front.

Roughly 40 minutes in, Zelensky hit back at Vance’s insistence that Ukraine needed to engage in diplomacy with Russia by reminding the VP that Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin has a history of breaking agreements and lying.

That triggered the stunning shouting match between Zelensky, Trump and Vance.

Zelensky has insisted that Ukraine must receive security guarantees as part of any deal for a ceasefire or other arrangement to end the war.

In the public eye, he’s been short on specifics of what the security guarantees would entail. The Trump administration has suggested that the onus is more on Europe to provide those guarantees.

“They were talking about European boots on the ground, security guarantees for Ukraine, a positive movement towards ending this war and Ukraine and the United States, being bound together for a generation economically,” Waltz told “State of the Union.”

Some European leaders have indicated a desire to step up.

“Today it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge,” European Union foreign minister Kaja Kallas said after the blow-up in the Oval Office Friday.

Estimates for US spending on Ukraine vary. The Kiel Institute pegs it at roughly $119.7 billion, while the Defense Department says roughly $182.8 billion. Europe as a whole has spent $138.7 billion, per the Kiel Institute.

For decades, European countries have long lagged behind the US in terms of their investments in their militaries, a longstanding grievance of Trump.

European leaders privately set out plans on defence spending, says NATO's Rutte

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said that some European leaders had privately set out new plans on defence spending during a meeting in London, but he declined to give details, saying it was for individual leaders to set them out.

"Today at the table I heard new announcements, and I'm not going to announce them to you, because they should do this. But this was very good news that more European countries will ramp up defence spending," Rutte told reporters outside the meeting on Sunday.

Germany's Scholz: Stop to bombing would be starting point for Ukraine peace talks

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Sunday that a halt in fighting could be a starting point for potential peace talks for Ukraine.

"It would be very helpful if the bombing were to stop...That would also be the starting point for talks that can then continue," Scholz told journalists after a meeting of European leaders in London.

He said that a focus for allies will be to ensure that Ukraine has a strong army when the war there is over so that it can defend itself against any future aggression.

"The basis of everything will be a strong army," Scholz said.

European Leaders Embrace Zelensky In London, Start Work On Alternate Peace Plan

After essentially being kicked out of the White House on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky went to London where British Prime Minister Keir Starmer immediately offered a warm embrace: 'we stand with you' - was the message after the major public clash with President Trump and Vice President Vance in the Oval Office.

"You have full backing from the United Kingdom and we stand with you with Ukraine for as long as it may take," Starmer, who was also just at the White House on Thursday, said in a presser with Zelensky on Saturday.

"And I hope you’ve heard some of that cheering in the street, that is the people of the United Kingdom coming out to demonstrate how much they support you, how much they support Ukraine, and our absolute determination to stand with unwavering determination," the UK leader added.

Zelensky is also meeting with the UK's King Charles on Sunday. CNN and other are presenting this moment as a consolation of sorts after the "nightmare Trump meeting".

Currently, European leaders are meeting at Lancaster house, hosted by the UK's Starmer, reportedly to work with Ukraine on a peace plan.

The leaders in attendance include NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, French President Emmanuel Macron, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Starmer said Sunday before the meeting that Kiev and Europe will work together toward a plan to "stop the fighting" with Russia before presenting it to the White House.

The British PM told BBC: "We have agreed that the UK, along with France and possibly one or two others, will work with Ukraine on a plan to stop the fighting. Then we will discuss that plan with the US."

The fact that these European leaders are now talking about urgently drawing up an official new peace plan is without doubt due to the pressure of the Trump presidency as well as the controversial mineral deal and Zelensky's apparent rejection of it.

While these leaders may still not actually be interested in peace, given many of them have urgently called for the West to keep transferring weapons to Ukraine's military, they are at least making a show of it as an alternative approach to Washington.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has bluntly acknowledged that the Western allies appear weaker and more divided than ever at this point, per FT:

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has warned that fractures in the traditional transatlantic alliance will “leave us all weaker”, while suggesting that the UK and Italy can together “play an important role in bridge-building”.

“We are all committed to the goal that we all want to achieve — which is a just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” Meloni told Starmer at the start of a bilateral meeting before the summit. “It is very very important that we avoid the risk that the west divides.”

The Kremlin will meanwhile likely bypass engaging these European leaders altogether, in preference of continuing to deal with Trump on the cause of achieving ceasefire in Ukraine.

Russian leadership also understands that Europe will ultimately fall in line based on whatever Washington finally achieves on the peace negotiations front, as has been the historic pattern, and given the US shoulders the bulk of defense funds and hardware for NATO. The US has continued to pursue bilateral talks with Moscow, yet without European or Ukrainian representatives in the room.

Trump will set exact levels for Mexico, Canada tariffs coming Tuesday, says US commerce chief

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday that tariffs on Canada and Mexico will go into effect on Tuesday, but that President Donald Trump will determine whether to stick with the planned 25% level.

"That is a fluid situation," Lutnick told the Fox News program "Sunday Morning Futures."

"There are going to be tariffs on Tuesday on Mexico and Canada. Exactly what they are, we're going to leave that for the president and his team to negotiate."

Lutnick's comments were the first indication from Trump's administration that it may not impose the full threatened 25% tariffs on all goods from Mexico and non-energy imports from Canada.

He said the two countries have "done a reasonable job" securing their borders with the United States, though the deadly drug fentanyl continues to flow into the country.

Trump sowed confusion last week when he mentioned a possible April 2 deadline in connection with tariffs on Canada and Mexico, but later reaffirmed the Tuesday deadline and said he would add another 10% tariff on Chinese goods on Tuesday, effectively doubling 10% duties imposed on Feb. 4.

Lutnick said Trump is expected to raise tariffs on China on Tuesday unless the country ends fentanyl trafficking into the U.S.
