Can Iran Strike Ukraine? Tehran's Ballistic Capabilities Pose a Legitimate Threat to Kyiv


A near-escalation triggered by a Ukrainian drone attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea brought forward the question of whether Iran possesses ballistic missiles capable of striking Ukraine.

Recent escalation between Ukraine and Iran threatened to collapse two wars into one big clash that spans Europe, the Middle East, and even Africa.

All of which raises the question: Does Iran have the capability to strike Ukraine if the hostilities were to rise to that level?

Short answer: Yes. Iran possesses the ballistic missile capability to execute direct strikes against Ukrainian territory.

Following a Ukrainian drone operation that inadvertently killed an Iranian sailor late last month, Tehran briefly mobilized its strategic deterrent.

The aborted retaliation highlights a critical vulnerability in Ukraine's air defense architecture.

The Strategic Geometry

The straight-line distance separating Tehran from Kyiv is approximately 2,300 kilometers.

From launch sites in northern Iran, the trajectory to southern or eastern Ukrainian targets shrinks to just 1,800 kilometers.

This proximity places the entirety of Ukraine within the operational envelope of multiple Iranian medium-range ballistic missiles.

Iran's Medium-Range Arsenal

The Khorramshahr family of liquid-fueled projectiles represents the most potent threat to Ukrainian infrastructure.

While Iran officially caps its missile range at 2,000 kilometers, Western assessments indicate the Khorramshahr can exceed 3,000 kilometers if fitted with a lighter payload.

These systems can reach the entire Ukrainian landmass from northern Iranian launchpads.

Certain Khorramshahr variants are engineered to deploy up to 20 submunitions, deliberately complicating interception efforts.

The solid-fueled Sejjil offers the fastest reaction time for Iranian strategic forces. Boasting a range of 2,000 kilometers, it can deliver a 750-kilogram warhead to eastern Europe with minimal launch preparation.

Other systems in the Iranian inventory include the liquid-fueled Emad and Ghadr platforms.

The Emad features a maneuverable re-entry vehicle designed to evade terminal phase defenses.

Shorter-range solid-fuel assets, such as the Kheibar Shekan and the purportedly hypersonic Fattah series, top out at 1,500 kilometers. Their reach is strictly limited to southern Ukrainian regions.

Technical Limitations and Defense Gaps

Despite their formidable range, older Iranian systems suffer from modest accuracy parameters.

Circular error probable rates routinely exceed a kilometer, rendering them viable only against sprawling area targets such as ports and urban centers.

Newer iterations equipped with maneuverable warheads offer slight precision upgrades.

Kyiv lacks the specialized interceptors required to reliably defeat these inbound threats.

Defeating medium-range ballistic trajectories necessitates high-tier systems like the Arrow-3, THAAD, or advanced SM-3 batteries.

Ukraine’s existing Patriot installations offer marginal protection, particularly against warheads that maneuver or scatter submunitions.

The Caspian Trigger

The theoretical threat almost materialized following a kinetic exchange between July 25 and 29. Ukrainian long-range drones struck maritime targets in the Caspian Sea.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed hits on a Russian warship and vessels transporting Iranian-linked military cargo.

The Security Service of Ukraine characterized the struck ships as sanctioned assets operating on a known bilateral military supply route.

However, Tehran reported that a commercial ship transporting iron ore was damaged, resulting in one fatality and several injuries.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared the incident a severe violation that "cannot go unanswered."

State-aligned media in Tehran subsequently broadcast maps illustrating the Khorramshahr-4's ability to cover all of Ukraine.

Internal deliberations in Tehran reportedly considered launching a small-warhead ballistic missile at a Ukrainian Black Sea port.

The planned strike was intended as a symbolic retaliatory gesture.

Diplomatic De-escalation

A rapid diplomatic intervention prevented a direct state-on-state exchange. Ukrainian Acting Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha contacted his Iranian counterpart, emphasizing the strike was strictly aimed at Russian assets.

Kyiv formally offered financial compensation for the Iranian casualties.

Araghchi ultimately confirmed that Tehran did not seek further conflict, provided restitution was paid. The immediate threat of a ballistic launch subsequently dissipated.

The brief crisis underscores a volatile background of arms transfers and historical grievances.

Tehran remains a pivotal supplier of loitering munitions and ballistic missiles to the Russian war effort.

The relationship has been severely strained since Iranian forces downed a Ukrainian civilian airliner in 2020.

While Iran’s missile reserves have been depleted by regional campaigns, sufficient stockpiles remain to execute limited strikes against European targets.

Customer service emerges as an early test of AI’s impact on jobs

  Artificial intelligence has yet to trigger the wave of white-collar job losses that some feared, but customer service is emerging as an early test case.

Earlier this month, Uber cut about 10 percent of its customer support team as part of a broader effort to “simplify operations, strengthen in-person collaboration, and continue to embrace AI,” a company spokesperson confirmed to NewsNation.

“We are operating in a world where AI is shaping entire industries,” Megha Yethadka, Uber’s VP of global community operations, wrote in an internal memo sent to employees, calling it an opportunity to “accelerate output” and “improve quality.”

The ride-hailing giant isn’t alone.

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has credited AI with enabling the company to cut 4,000 customer support roles. Microsoft has also trimmed its customer service workforce in recent years, according to Bloomberg.

For companies, the upside is clear: lower costs, faster response times and around-the-clock support. The bigger question is how many human workers will ultimately be needed to handle the complex tasks AI can’t do.

As it stands now, customer service job postings on Indeed are about 10 percent below pre-pandemic levels in the U.S., while overall job postings on the platform are slightly above pre-pandemic levels.

What’s next for customer service

No one knows exactly how many customer service jobs AI will replace, but Forrester predicts that by 2030, nearly half of those jobs will be lost to the technology.

The firm expects high-volume contact centers — those handling hundreds of thousands of inquiries each month — to see the biggest reductions in staff.

Last month, Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said he expects AI to displace “a large percentage” of customer service work over time. That expectation is consistent with Anthropic research showing customer service representatives are the second-most AI-exposed occupation.

But humans aren’t expected to disappear from the process entirely, and the pace of transition could depend on consumers’ tolerance for AI in customer service.

Research firm Gartner doesn’t expect any Fortune 500 company to fully eliminate human customer service by 2028. It also predicts that half of companies that cut customer service staff due to AI will rehire workers to perform similar functions.

“AI simply isn’t mature enough to fully replace the expertise, empathy, and judgment that human agents provide,” Emily Potosky, a senior director of research in Gartner’s customer service practice, said in February.

When it comes to customer service, most Americans still prefer speaking with a human over AI, consumer surveys suggest.

In 2024, there were approximately 2.8 million customer service jobs in the U.S., according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Employment in the occupation is projected to decline by about 5.5 percent by 2034, a net loss of roughly 150,000 jobs.

'Liquid could be answer to stop cavities without drilling: study'

 A low-cost liquid could help revolutionize the future of dental care for children, according to new research.

A study conducted by the University of Michigan, which began in 2018, found silver diamine fluoride (SDF) stopped decay in more than half of treated baby teeth. The treatment requires no drilling, shots or sedation.

“This is a very effective and safe treatment — even in children as young as 1,” said Dr. Margherita Fontana, the study’s lead investigator.

The Phase III trial involved 830 children younger than 6, with participants recruited through dental offices, pediatric medical practices, Head Start and Early Head Start programs in three states. Researchers noted 38 percent saw tooth decay stopped in over half the children’s affected baby teeth when treated at six-month intervals.

“Our results support [Food and Drug Administration] approval of SDF for managing arrest of tooth decay in young children,” added Dr. Amr Moursi of New York University.

“Removing SDF from off-label status would be an important innovation which could lead to increased utilization by providers, enhanced payments by insurers and more consistent product quality,” Moursi said.

Tooth decay remains the most persistent disease among children, affecting over 40 percent alone in the U.S. Cavities left untreated result in infections, intense pain and repeated medical appointments.

What is Silver diamine fluoride, or SDF?

Silver diamine fluoride is a liquid painted onto the cavity with a sponge-tipped applicator.

SDF prevents or restrains decay without drilling or shots.

The liquid his approved in the U.S. for tooth sensitivity and dentists have been using it off-label since then. SDF has yet to receive FDA approval for tooth decay, however, due to its shortage of clinical trials. Outside the U.S., it has been used successfully in many countries for decades.

How much does SDF cost and is it safe?

According to the Dental Clinics of Texas, the treatment typically ranges from $20 to $75 per application.

The clinic adds that SDF is safe to treat cavities.

Fontana notes that applying SDF to children could control the cavity until the baby tooth falls out naturally. For adults, it can be a long-term solution.

“For almost anyone, this can arrest the decay and stop the infection and the pain it causes,” she said. “This could benefit many people.”

Jordan says could strike Iranian militias in Iraq: Al-Arabiya

 Jordan informed Iraq of intelligence indicating that Iranian militias plan to strike Jordan from Iraqi territory, Al-Arabiya reported on Saturday, citing a Jordanian official. The Jordanian government also said it could target the militias in Iraq in retaliation.

According to the report, Jordan told Iraq that it expects the Iraqi government to take measures to stop the militias. Jordan has been the target of Iranian strikes since the start of the United States military operations against Iran, as it hosts some US assets.
