From Force Majeure To Forced Haulage: Oracle Is Now Trucking Natural Gas To Its AI Data Centers

Two weeks ago, Oracle told the world that Project Jupiter, its massive 2.45GW New Mexico mega-campus for OpenAI, was "on schedule." It also sent a force majeure notice to the developer.

Today we found out how it plans to square that circle: with a lot of trucks.

According to Bloomberg, Oracle has been quietly keeping several data centers on track by hauling compressed natural gas (CNG) by road straight to the server farms, and is now weighing the same stopgap for Project Jupiter, where the gas pipeline that is supposed to feed the campus is running late and threatening the timeline. The plan would let Oracle bring the early phases online before the pipe enters service.

Oracle shares slid about 5.5% on the report...

.... while Bloom Energy (BE), which happens to have a 2.4GW fuel cell contract for Project Jupiter (fuel cells which, last we checked, run on natural gas), tumbled 8%

Regular Readers Will Recall...

Back on Sept 24, we reported that Oracle had sent a force majeure notice to Blue Owl's Stack Infrastructure unit over Jupiter, citing potential power delays, and that Oracle and Bloom immediately launched a reassurance tour insisting everything was fine. Our take at the time: companies don't issue force majeure notices because everything is going fantastically.

Today's story suggests we were, if anything, too polite.

The root of the problem is a pipeline. Energy Transfer (ET) had to reroute the line that will ultimately power Jupiter after state regulators rejected the proposed route (per DCD, the rejection came in July after an initial application was denied in March), pushing the in-service date from this summer to next year. Meanwhile, Oracle has also put out an RFP for 2GW of new renewables in New Mexico, which tells you just how many backup plans the "on schedule" project now requires.

The "Virtual Pipeline"

And it's not just New Mexico. Per Bloomberg, trucked gas kept an Oracle data center outside Salt Lake City moving for more than a year while it waited for its pipeline, with Superior Plus's Certarus doing the hauling. Oracle is also using it for initial work at its OpenAI campus in Shackelford County, Texas, where VoltaGrid is the supplier.

Oracle's massive Project Jupiter data center in New Mexico.

A small cottage industry of CNG haulers has spotted the opportunity and is now pitching "virtual pipeline" services to hyperscalers desperate to start generating compute before the actual pipes show up. Oracle, for its part, seemed thrilled, publicly thanking VoltaGrid on X for its "cost-effective power solutions" shortly after Bloomberg came asking questions.

About that "cost-effective" part.

East Daley Analytics' Jack Weixel told Bloomberg that once you add up labor, specialized equipment and the diesel to move the trucks themselves, delivered CNG costs roughly four times the price of gas at a major pipeline hub. The process is about as elegant as it sounds: gas is pulled off a pipeline, compressed into a trailer, driven for hours to the site, then decompressed to feed the generators. Even a modest AI data center needs trucks arriving constantly around the clock. Diversification at its finest.

There is a reason this approach has historically been reserved for remote mines and oil rigs far from the grid, not for the crown jewels of the AI buildout.

The Napkin Math Gets Ugly Fast

The real question is scale. SemiAnalysis energy analyst Ellie Holbrook told Bloomberg that if Oracle ran just 100MW of Jupiter (roughly 4% of its eventual 2.45GW) on trucked gas, each large trailer would supply only about 40 minutes of electricity.

Let's do the (approximate) math:

  • 100MW at 40 minutes per trailer = ~36 trailers a day, or one every 40 minutes, 24/7/365.
  • Scale that to the full 2.45GW and you need roughly 880 trailers a day, or one pulling up to the gate every 90 seconds or so... forever.

Put differently, trucking can get the lights on in the lobby, not power a gigawatt-scale AI campus. It's a bridge, and a very expensive one, to a pipeline that New Mexico regulators have already sent back to the drawing board once.

And Oracle can hardly afford expensive bridges right now: as Bloomberg notes, the company's free cash flow is negative and expected to stay that way until more of its AI data centers are completed, while it has staked billions (and its reputation) on delivering capacity for OpenAI on time. Paying a 4x premium on fuel to keep the schedule intact is exactly the kind of cost that never shows up in the investor-day slides, right up until it shows up in the margins.

Bottom Line

As we have argued for a long time, the binding constraint on the AI boom isn't GPUs, it's power, and the "solution" of building on-site gas generation only works if the gas actually arrives. When the gas comes by truck at four times the price, the "behind the meter" model starts to look a lot like "behind the 18-wheeler."

Oracle insists Jupiter remains on schedule, and maybe it does. But when the fallback plan for a $165 billion, 2.45GW campus is an around-the-clock convoy of CNG trailers, the more likely outcome is the one hinted at by the force majeure notice: delays, higher costs, or both, with Bloom, Blue Owl and the rest of the Jupiter financing chain along for the ride.

Then again, nothing says "AI supercycle" quite like a trucking dispatch schedule.

'Khamenei seeks AI boost for security forces'

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei called on Thursday for greater use of artificial intelligence and other technologies to strengthen the country's security forces.

In a message, Khamenei said the "targeted use" of AI in data analysis could improve the "the quality and facilitating the execution of the Law Enforcement Command's missions". He also called for upgrades in personnel, hardware and software.

Khamenei said US and Israeli attacks targeting different levels of the police force had failed to disrupt its operations, with personnel continuing to perform their duties from streets and vehicles despite the strikes.

Israel killed Tangsiri over fears he could lead IRGC - JPost

Israel assassinated IRGC Navy commander Alireza Tangsiri in March partly over concerns he could become the next head of the Revolutionary Guards and prove a more formidable adversary than Ahmad Vahidi, The Jerusalem Post reported on Thursday.

The report said senior Israeli officials viewed Tangsiri as a highly creative and resourceful commander, while Vahidi, who later became IRGC chief, was seen as having less ability to shape Iran’s broader security posture.

The Jerusalem Post also cited earlier reporting that around March 19, US Gen. Brad Cooper made a secret call to IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir asking Israel to eliminate Tangsiri because he was considered a serious threat in the Strait of Hormuz and the wider naval conflict. Zamir approved the request and Tangsiri was killed on March 26, according to the report.

The newspaper said concerns about Tangsiri’s possible future leadership of the IRGC were among several Israeli reasons for targeting him, while Cooper’s request helped advance an operation that already had Israeli support.

US imposes new Iran-related sanctions

The United States imposed a fresh round of Iran-related sanctions on Thursday, targeting dozens of individuals, entities and vessels, according to the US Treasury Department website.

“Treasury is starving the tyrannical regime in Tehran of the money it uses to wage war in the region, and we will continue exposing those who enable the regime’s oil sales,” said Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent. “No enabler of Iranian sanctions evasion is safe from the full force of Treasury’s authorities.”

El-Sayed’s long history of trashing Obama resurfaces ahead of rally with former prez

Democratic Michigan Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed repeatedly rebuked former President Barack Obama as insufficiently progressive in writings and comments that have resurfaced ahead of a high-profile rally featuring the two men later this month.

“I have to say now what I’ve been holding in throughout his campaign, and what I think all of us have to admit: Obama was not the right choice — he just wasn’t the wrong one,” El-Sayed wrote in a 2012 HuffPost piece right after Obama’s re-election victory.

“This leader has perpetuated war, violated our civil liberties, deported more people from our shores than any other president before him, and the list of his failures goes on.”

On the campaign trail, El-Sayed has recounted the excitement he felt when Obama won the presidency in 2008.

“In 2008, a guy named Barack Hussein Obama runs for and wins the presidency. I got to be honest with you all, it’s the first time I ever saw myself reflected in politics at all,” El-Sayed, 41, said at an August rally.

But in the 2012 op-ed, El-Sayed repudiated his feelings of four years earlier.

“The jubilation of his 2008 election will forever live with me,” he wrote. “But for me, that memory will serve not as a reminder of the history we made that night — but of the silly emotions of a naïve young man who didn’t understand that hope and change required more than flowery prose and a winning smile.”

The future candidate went on to assert that the US was not “better off” under Obama and trashed the 44th president’s signature Affordable Care Act as “watered-down reform that kowtows to the interests of healthcare lobbies.”

El-Sayed’s critiques of Obama continued even after the first black president left office, according to a chronology by CNN.

During his unsuccessful Michigan gubernatorial bid in 2017, El-Sayed gave an interview with Vox in which he attacked Obama for his “fairly centrist, middle-of-the-road Democratic policies.” The resulting piece was titled “Don’t Call This Man ‘The Next Obama.”

Three years later, in January 2020, El-Sayed warned Democrats at a University of Chicago Institute of Politics panel against repeating “the same mistakes of the past eight years under Barack Obama.”

“We are not, as a country, better off eight years after Obama was elected in 2008 than we were when he was elected. And I say this as somebody who loves him deeply,” he said.

“I appreciate the fact that we don’t give him credit for what he did for the economy in the short term. But the structure of the economy did not change under Barack Obama,” added El-Sayed, arguing the Democrat’s shortcomings set the stage for President Trump’s rise.

“At 24, I watched President Obama win in 2008,” El-Sayed told CNN in a statement. “He changed what was possible for someone like me, with a name like mine. Despite being dealt one of the toughest hands of any American president—he handled it.

“And despite all he did, there remains so much left to do. That’s where the next generation, inspired by him and his leadership, picks up. We stand on the shoulders of giants—and I can’t wait to tell him myself later this month.”

El-Sayed is locked in a tight race against Republican former congressman Mike Rogers and has been criticized by both Jewish and black groups for his near-obsessive focus on the Middle East and Israel’s war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Last month, he stumped with former Vice President Kamala Harris, despite El-Sayed backing the 2024 “Uncommitted” movement — which refused to endorse Harris against Trump in the crucial state.

El-Sayed’s campaign and representatives for Obama did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The pair are scheduled to appear together and alongside other Michigan Democratic candidates Oct. 24 in Detroit.

Mamdani dined at NYC Palestinian restaurant blasted for ‘openly genocidal’ menu on Oct. 7 anniversary

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani dined at a Palestinian restaurant chain blasted for being “openly genocidal” against Jews on the third anniversary of the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks in Israel.

Hizzoner ate dinner at Ayat Hinds Hall on the Upper West Side — part of a chain whose sister restaurant in Brooklyn was blasted for featuring a menu section entitled “From the River to the Sea,” in the wake of the 2023 attacks.

The restaurant is named after Hind Rajab, a five-year-old Palestinian child who was killed by IDF forces in Gaza in Jan. 2024, and also pays homage to the anti-Israel protesters at Columbia University, who renamed Hamilton Hall “Hind’s Hall” when they took over the building.

The menu for Hinds Hall features a map of Palestine that removes Israel completely.Times of IsraelIn Dec. 2023, the Middle Eastern eatery made headlines when its menu was blasted by critics for being  “openly genocidal” despite owners Abdul Elenani and Ayat Masoud insisting they were not calling for the eradication of Israel.

“From the river to the sea” is deemed an antisemitic call for the destruction of the Jewish state by the Anti-Defamation League, and is a favorite chant for anti-Israel activists.

Elenani told the Post at the time that the slogan had been on the menu for months before the Oct. 7 attacks and that since then he had been receiving daily death threats.

He said he supported a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine and condemned the violence on both sides.

It wasn’t clear who Mamdani was dining with, but the meal was a respite from the barrage of heckles and boos he received from anti-Israeli protesters who believed he turned his back on the Palestinian cause.

“Zohran you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide,” the outraged protesters yelled in unison at the stone-faced mayor at a vigil to honor Jewish victims killed by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7 and the Palestinians killed in the subsequent war.

As soon as the mayor stepped outside of the restaurant Wednesday night, the insults continued.

One masked activist who had been waiting for the mayor outside ran up to his car and shouted: “Stop being a f—king traitor.”

Another activist called Mamdani a “boot licker” and demanded he “stand up for people [facing] genocide.”

Hizzoner’s security team had to hold the irate protesters back.
