Orban: Hungary to cap fuel prices from midnight

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Monday a fuel price cap taking effect at midnight to combat soaring energy costs. In a Facebook post, Orban confirmed the government will introduce "protected prices".

Under the measure, gasoline will be limited to 595 forints per liter and diesel to 615 forints per liter. The capped rates apply exclusively to vehicles registered in Hungary and cover private individuals, farmers, transport companies, and other businesses.

To maintain an uninterrupted supply, authorities will tap into state reserves, he said. The decision follows warnings from leaders around the world of disruptions to oil deliveries through the Strait of Hormuz, amid the war between the US, Israel and Iran.
