Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian praised on Monday the selection of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the country's new supreme leader, emphasizing that his "wise leadership" is essential for solving the nation's problems "by creating an atmosphere based on trust and public participation."
The 56-year-old theology teacher, who succeeds his father Ali Khamenei following his death in US and Israeli strikes last week, assumes leadership amid heightened tensions.
US President Donald Trump had called him "unacceptable," even before his appointment. At the same time, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz warned that any leader pursuing Tehran's regional agenda would become an "unequivocal target for elimination."
