Current candidate for the 2026 Labour Party leadership election Andy Burnham will begin receiving government briefings from civil servants after outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer approved access talks with prospective Labour leadership candidates, a spokesperson said on Tuesday.
"The Prime Minister has agreed with the Cabinet Secretary that access talks can take place with prospective candidates for the Labour leadership and before formal nominations have closed … access talks will be led and coordinated by the Cabinet Secretary in line with the Cabinet manual," Starmer's spokesman said.
Asked whether Burnham would receive security briefings, the spokesman replied: "Again, that will form part of access talks coordinated by the Cabinet Secretary." The talks are expected to begin before Labour leadership nominations formally open on July 9.
